It's been a few days since we've learned about the proposed increases to use of grounds and facilities in the City of Yarra.

These measures will impact upon many clubs and thousands of people associated with them.

For Fitzroy, the new prices amount to a 380% increase (just under $25,000 per year) just to get sides on the park.

This is of course way beyond the scope of a community club to just find out of nowhere, particularly when we are on the cusp of the first games since the pandemic started.

Well I found out Saturday evening when I was about five red cordials deep next to the Prez, so if anything I was a bit late to start the thread!

It's just outrageous, luckily there is an increasingly bigger push from the local community to make the displeasure known. Hopefully tonight's meeting puts a rocket up them.

Many is the bigfooty poster who's brought themselves undone posting after a few of the cordials.

I've seen a little backtracking from the council saying that meeting diversity & inclusion targets will lower the cost on clubs. I know that the clubs based out of the BSO would be better placed than most to meet any reasonable targets, but if your proposed changes are so reasonable, why are you waiting until the last moment to notify the clubs affected?

Also, the idea that diversity & inclusion in sports clubs is best served by punishing those that are currently unable to field a women's team for example, rather than supporting them to work towards those goals is an odd one indeed. Local sports clubs by their very nature are better off being as inclusive and welcoming as possible. Anyone who's had the good fortune to be involved with a well run community sports club (or at least one that strives to be well run) knows that they offer so much more than just a facility for a few people to play an organised sport on the weekend.

It just seems to me to be a mechanism for the council to be able to price out any sports club who's facilities are inconveniently placed in the way of what could be a more financially profitable use of the land. Perhaps some of the less high profile clubs in the area are the real targets?

Yarra Council’s withdraws move to implement a massive fee hike could cripple local clubs

A controversial council proposal to hike fees for locals clubs to use their sporting grounds has been sent back to the drawing board.

Yarra Council has withdrawn the issue, which sparked a backlash from inner-city clubs, and will develop a new report to be handed down in coming weeks.

It comes after an outpouring of support for local clubs and demand from the community for further consultation.

Socialist councillor Stephen Jolly, who campaigned against the proposal, said it was a major win for the community.

“Thousands of kids play sports in Yarra,” he said.

“We’ve never had that many emails of complaint then we have had over this.

“They (the council) had no choice. They were in line for a battering from the community tonight.”

Fitzroy Football Club was among many sporting organisations that were told late on Friday about a City of Yarra plan to change the way they are billed.

Have been working nearby BSO lately & must say the ground looks great. Goal posts in & the ground was being marked yesterday.
Great to have local footy back & hopefully all councils will realise the importance of clubs to the local community.
Does the grandstand open on game day? Temp fencing there everyday I have seen for obvious reasons I guess.
