Some really strange newbie posts in here....

My thoughts on cardio are a little biased, i've been playing footy since i was 5 and have regularly done pre season training starting around October since i was 15, back then i loved running however as the years have passed on the pre seasons started later and later, my passion for the gym increased i really dislike cardio. While it has many benefits, its not the be all and end all of weight loss and is generally very overrated.

Generally speaking steady state cardio will increase your calorie expenditure allowing weight loss to occur particularly in calorie deficit, it can also lend itself towards muscle wastage, as opposed to resistance training that can increase lean muscle whilst burning fat, resistance training also has the benefit of EPOC (burning more calories post work out) whereas steady state doesn't have this affect. HIIT training will increase the EPOC affect and affect the body more like resistance training as opposed to steady state cardio. Secondly, increasing lean muscle through resistance training will increase your basal metabolic rate as muscle burns more calories than bodyfat. Resistance training can increase joint and muscle strength as will improve bone density. A lot of running is very hard on the knee and ankle joints.

I am not trying to say cardio is not benefical or shouldn't be done, but personally a combination of HIIT training and resistance training is the most optimum combination. But i do say do what what you enjoy most, as long as you are exercising it will only improve you health.

I don't know if they have Hash House Harriers in Tassie but if you can find a group they are awesome. They meet every week for a run, usually about 7-8km. Then about once a month they have a longer run on the weekend. Every run is like a navigation course where you need to work out which way to go as you go along, which means that you need to stop frequently along the way, which is good if your fitness isn't that great. It's exercise but fun and a good social time as we have a meal afterwards.

Started 7 months ago at 126kg, trying to run a bit on the treadmill, and going about 2.3km in t15 minutes. But i started to feel it in my legs and joints, so concentrated on other things. Mostly did the rowing machine, eliptical and weights.

Now, 7 months later, I am at 90kg (190cm). Last week I had hurt my shoulder doing weights, so decided to try a run again. Made 5km in 30 minutes quite easily, and felt good. So have decided to start on the Couch to 10k (starting at 5km). Tonight did 4x10 minute runs at 10.5km/hr, with a minute walk in between each set. Was getting difficult at the end, but geez I am enjoying running again.

I just started on a treadmill 5 k run as i have a gammy knee and hips. I would suggest maybe a walk/run walk/run Till you can handle the 5 k with ease.

I couldn't find a general running thread so I though I'd create a new thread. Feel free to merge if there's an appropriate thread that I've missed.

I'm in year 12 and am pretty busy with school. I get up at 6am and get home from school at 5pm. I generally like to relax or do homework from 7pm until about 10pm and then I go to sleep.

I have a period between 5-6pm (when I have tea) that I don't do anything and want to use that timeslot to get into shape.

How far do you think I would have to run daily at a moderate intensity to lose weight? I'm 167cm and 76kg, if that makes a difference. I'm pretty new at fitness so any help is appreciated. :)
Run some 400s and 600s
