Rusling has to get a game. Surely he's better off running around in the Ones than getting frustrated in the twos. He's quick, got a good leap and strong hands and he gives you a contest when the ball hits the ground.
SOme players just don't thrive in the VFL, and i think Rusling is one of those.

Rocca should go back and get some confidence and form... he wasn't far away friday night... he got his hands on the ball a hell of a lot more than he had been in previous weeks.

Perhaps the week back at VFL level will just be the tonic he needs.

I can't see the point in dropping Tarrant. He should be used more up the ground, as a link man, where he doesn't have to worry about kicking at goal.
The more he misses goals, the more his confidence drops and it seems to affect his whole game.

Perhaps Jon Anthony can come in and play forward. I know he's been played predominantly as a back, but he might be that unknown quantity that surprises port and jags a few cheap goals for us?

Our forward line has become very much one-dimensional with the drop off in form and the abscense of Leon and now Dale. Rusling, and perhaps Anthony, may add something to the mix!

If CC hadn't injured himself (his left shoulder injury is now a real problem), he'd have to go close to a recall. It's a real shame about CC, i think he's looking as fit as he's been since joining the club.

as for the other talls, Richards looks like a lost cause... we need to cut our loses with him, Hall and Walker.

Tarrant will miss the next two weeks with shin soreness, supposedly, Rusling claims his spot in the team...........

What happens to Rocca now? He must stay in the team in that we have no one else capable to take his place.

By the way, John Anthony is a defender exclusively.

I'm not a big fan with this "frustrated in the two's" theory, or the "he only plays well in the seniors" line you hear sometimes. I'm a big believer in form. If you're notdelivering for Willy, you dont deserve promotion. Simple as that.

Having said that I thought that Rusling was excellent on Saturday and he should be automatic selection this week Same for Rhyce Shaw, and also the same for Cam Cloke until he got injured.

Anthony also is coming along nicely. Maybe he will come in for the Carlton game.

QUOTE- [SOme players just don't thrive in the VFL, and i think Rusling is one of those.]

if he was any good and deserving of another AFL game he would dominate most weeks in the VFL. He must proove his worth in the VFL before he is promoted you cant just claim that hes "one of those blokes" who doesnt perform in the lower level. If he has talent than he should perform well at any level.

Everybody knows it's harder to get a kick in the twos than the ones. As a forward, it's usually even harder. The delivery into the forward line is inconsistant and it's harder to get space with players all chasing a kick rather than playing to team stratagies.

I stand by my comment!

and as for jon anthony being exclusively a backman.... surely that's to his detrement as an afl footy player? Look at Jason Cloke! He can't go forward and he is continually up and down, out of the ones because of it.

if you can play at both ends, you are going to be of far more value to the club than if you have only one string to your bow!

Maxwell and Egan never performed well in the VFL and you could argue Iles has looked better at AFL level than perhaps at VFL level. Some players either produce the same consistant effort at any level (i.e. Maxwell, Holland in his early days, C.Morrison is as good at AFL than at VFL, Richards plays more the same at AFL level than VFL level). However I think Rusling is the type who needs to settle in at any level before he starts playing good footy. I think he should be slotted in though for Taz or Rocca.

Presti, Wakelins, Scarlett, Harley, Rutten, Thornton, Fletcher, Dawson, Carrol, Harris, Glass, Barry, Hudghton go alright and none of them have ever been moved forward on even a sporadic basis.

Obviously it helps you but with Presti and Wakes aging, we need a key back. In our squad is more detrimental to be a key forward who can't go back than a key back who can't go forward.

Should be a certainty this week, hopefully he can carry that form into the Port game this Friday. What we need in this forward line.

Well he kicked 4 on the weekend and although not named in the best list he has gotta be given a shot. What else can we loose besides another 4 points?

Reckon Bucks maybe rested (I thought he looked slow when going on the ball last week) and Rhyce to make a return.

I thought Rusling was OK on Saturday , he missed some marks he should have swallowed and some efforts below his knees weren't great. I'd be looking for greater agility if you are only around the 190 mark.
If Tarrant is rested for soreness it'll be interesting whether they rest Buckley aswell , this game is an important one and if Tarrant and Buckley don't play it'll make things harder. It would also make Rusling a certainty to play you would think.

I assume you mean Dustin, who in desperate times has played forward and he's actually a pretty good forward although with Lucas Lloyd etc we dont need him there, plus our backline is lost without him. Wasn't Presti a key forward in his junior career? kind of hard to imagine!

One of our great weaknesses over the past five-six years has been lack of versatility from our key position players. I'd kill for a kpp who can play at both ends. Hopefully the new breed of Maxwell T Cloke Rusling O'Brien and Anthony will be able to play at both ends of the ground and give us some much needed flexibility to cover injuries and oppposition match-ups a lot better.

Maybe a new coach will assist there too. I'd love to see Tarrant and Clement especially, moved around the ground a bit more.

Close to the stupidest post of the year.
There is alot of truth in that. The quality of disposal is poorer so they won't get it easy, the teams usually lack smarts in terms of following a gameplan, the coaches are even poorer, a young player may get tagged where in the AFL he may slip under the radar.

Chad Cornes, David Neitz, Chris Grant, Ben Graham, Cam Mooney, Luke McPharlin, Matthew Pavlich... the list could go on..

all have the albility, and have on several occasions, played down back. All are very capable forwards who have the flexibility of being able to play in defence when the team requires it.

all i was saying, is that it's got to be more beneficial to an aspiring AFL player if he has the ability to be flexible and not one-dimensional....

Surely that's stating the obvious!

JA played most of his JNR footy at Full Forward so he could quite possibly fill a role up there as well as down back.

Point invalidated via obvious stupidity ;)

I don't know about anyone else, but Rulsing looked pretty dam good in the seniors....:thumbsu:

maybe, just maybe.... i was right!

id love to see jimmy clement on a wing or at hf, i know its unreasonable to ever see him there, but his ability to pin point passes, and kick the ball long, his marking ability and pace, would be amasing on the wing, midfield, or even at hf. but his ability to shut down a player and be the quaterback of collingwood is something which the pies can not gamble with
