Thats what they thought in the USA. Then they got Donald. I am predicting they get a record amount of voters this time around.
The issue with US politics is that only loyal (if that's the right word) supporters of said candidate will turn up. Australia has a large proportion of voters that are central wing supporters, there are very limited voters that are like that in the US. Parties in the US rely on their policies to do the work because of non-compulsory voting. These policies are very left or right wing because that is a key area, a lot of non-voters are very central on this right-left scale and do not vote. They got what they wanted and will vote him back in even if the Democrat candidate was George Washington.
For example, It tends to be that gun lobbying (right wing) gets a lot of voters for a right wing (typically Republican) candidate.
Another thing is the psychology of the voters. Usually left-right supporters are very opinionated, example being it may be due to their upbringing.
US really needs to adopt a compulsory voting system like Australia to really ensure that politicians who best represent country wide values are chosen not just by right-left wing supporters.
