First Qualifying Final
Gumbies FFC v West Coast Wonders
The House of Gumby
Gumbies FFC finished the regular season as minor premiers for the fourth time in club history with 11 wins and a draw. It was a tale of two seasons for the Gumbies as the first half of the season saw them tread water with a 3-5 record to sit 10th after eight rounds before an eight-game win streak catapulted the boys in blue to the top of the Sweet FA ladder. A draw with the Mount Buller Demons last week cemented a six-point advantage over the Gold City Royals and home field advantage throughout the finals.
The half back line was the shining light for the Gumbies this season with omgfridge, Genghis Tron and Jivlain all in the top 6 for defenders league-wide for Dream Team points and EXIE points. omgfridge also lead all defenders for handballs while Genghis Tron lead all defenders for marks and Jivlain tied for the lead in tackles among defenders.
West Coast Wonders (9-1-7; 4th)
The West Coast Wonders have enjoyed a successful season having spent a grand total of one week outside the top 8 en route to nine wins, a draw and seven losses and their 15th top four finish from 31 seasons. Three wins and a draw from five matches between rounds three and seven propelled the Wonders to second place on the ladder however three consecutive losses between rounds 9-11 threatened to derail their progress as they fell to seventh. The Wonders stabilised by picking up four wins from their final six matches to push back into the top four and earn a double chance.
The Wonders may not have any standout individual performers however as a team they lead the league in hitouts, handballs and disposals. BallaratBulldog played the most games in any one position for the Wonders this season accumulating 15 games at full back, collecting the third-highest Dream Team and EXIE points among full backs. At the other end of the ground, JT_the_Man played 16 games across the half forward line, picking up 14 disposals, 4 marks and a goal per game while tying for ninth among all forwards for Dream Team Points.
