lol a ruckman having near 11 more hit outs a game is huge compared to 4 less touches

Not sure where the atats have come from but Gawn averaged 8 hitouts a game more than Hayes does at the same age

Even a rusted on Marshall lover would have had some doubts where he was heading. Understandably too. His rise this year has been amazing and good on him. He rewarded the coaches faith, perhaps that’s all Hayes needs? Who knows.

This is no crack at Marshall himself but it appears to me the only way a tall is able to get games and be developed properly under this coach is for both his parents to tragically die and be taken in by the senior coach as an adopted son. There certainly hasn't been any evidence of another way for a tall to be developed properly.

Probably using Footywire, comparison at same age defaults to using the year they actually turn that age. Ignoring that their birthdays are 6 months apart at the same age Gawn was into his fourth AFL season.

Over their first 7 career games Hayes is +15 in hitouts in a time where the AFL, successfully or unsuccessfully, tries to limit stoppages.

We're 5-2 and won the midfield in games with Hayes this season.

Who gives a * if he doesn't get an extra 3 possessions

On what measure did you we win the midfield when Hayes was playing? I mean sure, against West Coast and North. But hey thats about as accurate as claiming that Hinkley's a brilliant coach because we smashed those two teams.

For those who are big fans of Hayes I'd be keen to hear what sort of modern day ruck he will become?

He's definitely not a Grundy/English around the ground type, nor a tackler ala Nankervis/O'Brien. Doesn't seem a nullifier like Lycett/Stanley. Not shown much as a contested marker like Gawn/Preuss either.

I really struggle to see who this guy can model his game on right now and that's not a good thing.
He can be the 2018/19 version of Paddy Ryder. Tap the ball, and not do much else. I wonder how most of the people professing their great love of Hayes tap work were talking about Ryder in those years...

Watch Witts on Sunday
The guy who the commentary were shocked went off for a rest at the end of a game. And the commentators were shocked. And that was after spending an entire game having Riley O'Brien bash into him.

This is why we are stuck with Hinkley forever. Too many ppl, even on BigFooty, still secretly love him, Koch, etc.

None of these posters wanted him dropped, until he was dropped. Now he's no good.
Yea I dunno about you but I'm shocked that a 7 game ruck needs to work on his around the ground work & learn where to move.

SANFL level where you are standing around like a bollard when you are playing on athletic beasts like Redden will surely help.

Other thing to note is that Gawns first two years he was playing the chop out to Martin/Jamar as opposed to stepping in to first ruck duties

Gawn is one of the greatest ruckmen of all time and was given games in his first few years where he wasn't the first ruck and wasn't expected to set the world on fire. We just spent the last 3 years sooking about why Marshall wasn't putting up elite numbers as a developing tall, can we just for once not do that on this board?

Like I used to say with Butcher, if he had an extra 50 games under his belt that we instead pissed away on low ceiling smalls, he'd have been a much more consistent and effective player. Hayes is doing a job with his tapwork now, and he'll continue to grow. He'll have big games and he'll have quiet games but he'll probably usually win the ruck for us. We either get those games into him now or we trade him away for basically nothing, or keep him on the list and wonder why he's not developing.

Bang on! Actually, you were the ONLY person in the changes thread for the Richmond game who called his selection into question at all, and even you weren't outright calling for him to be dropped, just saying that he needed time.

"If he was good enough he'd be getting a game"

He wont the SANFL B&F last season, so clearly the coaches were happy with how he was tracking, and literally nobody on this board was calling for him to be dropped before he was.

Do we need to do the list of short, good honest triers with low ceilings who got plenty of games under Hinkley again?

Jake Neade 66 games under Hinkley
Kane Mitchell 35 games under Hinkley
Sam Gray 92 games under Hinkley
Nathan Krakouer 29 games under Hinkley
Cam O'Shea 59 games under Hinkley
Andrew Moore 36 games under Hinkley
Aaron Young 64 games under Hinkley
Paul Stewart 36 games under Hinkley
Cam Sutcliffe 3 games under Hinkley

The argument that players need to be of a good standard to get games under Hinkley is ridiculous.

Sam Baulderstone from Norwood also gives his regards!

What in particular is it that Sam needs to do?

After being dropped to the SANFL, he had 17 disposals and the most marks of anyone on the ground with 9. What did he not show in that game that he needs to show to get recalled?

If only there had been an opportunity to play Hayes in the same manner.

No this isn’t about learning. It’s clearly about a lack of fitness and mobility, and for both there’s no school.

Whether port fans rate him (like most here) or not rate him, it’s clear as day Hinkley and the coaching staff have no intentions on playing Sam, he could get 30 disposals and 50 hit outs and I doubt he will get a call up.

Sam would be foolish to stay at port next year assuming Ken is here.
