Looks like a back flanker or a VFL footballer to me Chimp , he'll have to work hard on his defensive game before he can become a forward. The game has changed. After a year in the backline we'll need to re teach him how to attack.

It's critical in any young forwards' development that Eddie Betts kicks 5-6 goals on them.

We have plenty of options this area which is good. I would rank them Knights ahead of Lloyd, Gordon and McDonough, however I believe McDonough is the best 3rd rounder we have picked up in ages and could be deadly in this position. He reminds me a lot of Jarryd Blair. The other one is Lennon who probably has the most upside of the lot.

We also have Lids, Martin, Edwards, Cotch ect all rotating through.

This is probably why someone like Grigg will slowly get pushed out.

yeah the game has changed when you apparently dont need to work as hard on your defensive game as a HBF than you do as a HFF :drunk:

Really enjoyed watching Gordon in the Adelaide and Essendrugs games. I reckon he will be a really good player and cement in the 22

Lloyd too, he will be the perfect FP. Great pickups these ones

Funny that it seems like we have a number of options in this area and yet during the course of this year there was plenty of discussion that we were not getting enough goals from our 'small forwards'.

It seems that we were wanting in this role 12 months ago but we have a number of options coming through and maturing now all at once - good to see.

Perhaps it will be a strength for us moving forward.

Not sure how you can say Gordon is a limited footballer. Kicks goals, takes marks wants to hurt people and runs all day. Seems ok to me, but sure needs to more of the ball to be even better.

As I said flea, no question on the blokes attributes you mentioned BUT its just my opinion, from watching all his games so far, he does not get the ball often enough, in some cases he can create a shocking turnover, and also trys to do to much or do something his talent wont allow him too. If he can knock that out of his game and gets the pill more often he may very well be a good consistent weapon.

Dont misunderstand me, the guy has done really well in his first year. My post was more in context with the OP in that comparing all our HHF or Small forwards, out of what we have Gordon appears to be the least natural at it..hope that makes sense ? Bottom line, I can see with red dogs natural asset, his natural game should be more of a run anywhere and create havoc type player. I believe that is what we decided to use him with at the half way point with great effect. He was not really a stay home HHF.

This is correct , it like chopping of a tree stumpers finger first day on the job to teach him how not too lose his hand. Hardwick is just old school but really has their best interests at heart.

Maybe they should watch video tapes of Eddie with the sound right up instead of having to see it in person in front of 80'000 fans? Has Hardwick even heard of Video Recorders?

Hopefully Knights can stay fit and we can utilise him as the SUB in each game and not fly him west like Essedon did with Chappy and Winderlinch this season.

Pettard is a better sub than Knights Imo , can play forward back and in the middle and seems to get involved in games very quickly , smart between the ears but body lets him down.

I'd be scared to use Knights as sub and considering his past 3 years of injury it would be negligent to pick him as sub early in the year or even in the team until he strings at least 4-6 VFL games together . We don't want to be a man down in the opening 4 rounds why we are trying to set up our season.

Plenty of time to drop it before the season starts
I just hope he hasn't put on too much too soon and it slows him down
That's a massive difference over 12 months!
Does not even look like the same bloke!

Less than 12 months as we saw him playing against StKilda only 3 months ago and he didn't look like that at all
Could just be the angles of his body being different, but its his face and legs that look like they've put on the most size

Agree, but I just disagreed with the tag 'limited footballer' that's all. I think he has multiple assets. I also agree that he needs to get the pill more, but would also say another year used to our system will hopefully make him get more involved.

Lloyd is a mark, kick goal forward, similar to Plapp and Williams from Bummers/Hawks, he does not have the speed to chase and harrass and apply fwd pressure and is not tall enough to play 3rd tall in AFL - limited IMO

Gordon is a running machine that is not a genuine marking goal kicker nor has the speed either, is more a winger or HFF where he can use his endurance to run all day, could also become a tagger if we need?? has some potential and i can see being in a best 22

Madonna and Edwards are the best small forwards we have, Edwards has a knack of being in the best position however lacks the foot skills of Madonna and is probably better suited in close than outside.

I can see Madonna coming on as that valuable small fwd we so desprerately lack.

Both are serviceable, but we need at least 1 to become very good.

We currently have 4-5 average medium forwards and we badly need 1 or 2 of them to become great.

Lloyd showed some good form up the ground late last year in the VFL as well. I could see him being a player. Gordon I'm not sure if he has the natural football nous to become a damaging player, but he's a good short term solution at the very least.
