There's a hell of a lot of self-entitlement in this thread.

A 307 game champion of our club, who has helped deliver us four premiership, is moving on to the next stage in his career/life.

His obligation is to his family first and foremost.

He has given us everything.

He owes us nothing.

He should go with our blessing, and our gratitude.

I for one would gladly drive him to the airport.

(if only to bask in the presence of the great man for an hour or so and wish him all the best)

I think people overrate Mitchell's importance to our team. At any rate he would only have been important for another year or two.
Importance is more sentimental I think. You wouldn't find a hawk supporter who doesn't respect the shit out of Sammy. The news is more emotional as he is a club legend than it is his onfield stuff. I think we all envisioned we'd be seeing him chaired off in his last game at the G in front of the Hawk army.

This means that for the rest of time Mitchell will be referred to as "Hawthorn and West Coast Player Sam Mitchell". Its just wrong. Can't the club see how something like that is so important to the fans. How about "Hawthorn and Brisbane player Jason Dunstall" or "Hawthorn and Sydney player Shane Crawford"? Its NOT RIGHT!!! Unless i have really missed the hook to this I think its just an awful and painful decision.

I must admit that I originally thought it was a reasonable idea this morning,
based on my obviously incorrect assumption that we would get a swap in Round 1/2 picks as a minimum.

That now seemingly off the table.

The salary cap space reasoning doesn't hold water because there are many players who would get pushed out before Sam.

So, like ThaiHawk, I will bide my time and see what transpires.

PS: IMHO a third-round pick for Mitch would be embarrassing for all concerned.....

5 time day, 5 time night premiership hero of the Hawthorn Football Club, Dermott Brereton

If Sam is happy then I personally am ok with it .The Bulldogs final was an eye opener for me The Doggies have about 3 or 4 mids the same as SM great vision quick with their hands excellent at getting the ball but not the quickest of foot ,I went to bed that night thinking he'd run his race TBH beaten at his own game by players who are in the mould of Sam Mitchell play the same way the style that has served us so well for all these years accept just coming into their prime and quicker he (and Lewis) in particular looked very slow when the heat was on in the game type of heat you only get in the finals not during the season and at the end of the day that's all that matters . Hes been a great player for us and I hope the deal goes through and I hope it works out well for him .Got to marvel at the way it was handled by the club and AC he is a genius , compare that to the NM debarkle ,loving the way the club is going about the trade period .

Mate you are so right it's just so so wrong stopped me in my tracks today:(

Would I rather see Sam work his magic for another year even if the output drops slightly as opposed to picking an 18 yo at pick plenty? Too bloody right I would. His artistry and Cyril's magic are the 2 things that make me go to the footy. There's plenty of logical arguments to make for the move but footy is not that clinical. Sam is integral to the fabric of the club.

Would you rather see the Woodwards and Lovells miss out on two more years of development? For them all to be gone for nothing in a year?

Brereton's legacy was 100% tarnished by playing for Sydney and Collingwood. I have the feeling that if you asked him now he would say that he would have preferred to have retired in 1992 rather than play for another club.

It's also worth noting what happened to hawthorn after brereton left.

Yep...but he's only a hawk to everyone. Sam will be the same unless he coaches WCE to 5 flags

That's probably the truth of this. Our developing mids need a space to compete for, or they'll all rot and leave.

Feel sick at the thought of no Sam Mitchell next year though. Our best mid of the past decade + leaving this way doesn't sit right.

The point has already been made, but how often is Brereton referred to as "Hawthorn, Collingwood and Sydney Champion"? Pretty much never. "Hawthorn Champion", and it will be the same with Sam. The only risk of it being any different is if he helps them with a flag. Mitchell is Mitchell's kryptonite, keeping him to 15 possessions in round 9 while collecting 21 of his own, so hopefully Tom can help us do our part in preventing WC making the GF next year.

Yup. Mitchell is hawk royalty mate. There is a symbolism here that is really relevant and important to psyche of the club. Sacrifice that at your peril. Sam Mitchell IS Hawthorn, not West Coast Eagles. It's not right!!

The more I have thought about this the more it appears to make sense, who else could we trade? The only other likely candidate could be Burgoyne.

By trading Mitchell he gets to play on and we get the cap space, the other candidates Hodge, Lewis and Gibson are all seemingly cooked and if we asked them to move on it would be a straight retirement.

Cap space that we are using 500 large on Tyrone Vickery.

All I know for sure is that it's Clarko's idea so in some way it benefit's both the team and Mitch more than it advantage's other parties both short and long term. He play's for a year over there, learns the coaching rope's for a few more then comes back to take over when Clarko retires after winning another 4 or 5 cups. Swwweeeeet!

Yes. Yes I would. Absolutely.

Average players who are 50/50 to make it as AFL footballers at all are never in short supply. Sam Mitchell is one of our all time greats. It is criminal to send him on his way for a rubbish third round pick or any pick at all for that matter. He belongs in a Hawthorn jumper, no ifs, no buts, he belongs with us.

I don't really give a shit about the football or business ramifications. Sometimes sentimentality must override those things. This is one of those times.

Amen brother. Not everyone gets it but you're one of those who do. Not everything in life is for sale in dollars and cents. The $wines spent $2m on the Bondi Billionaires and look how they played in the GF? There's more to life than money and more to life than Premierships. Mitchell should end his career a Hawk.

I don't think a single person begrudges same going - I think to a tee it's been nothing but well wishes.

I think it's the club people have an issue with and tbh I think that's warranted considering this has come from out of the park and not only blind sided Mitch but the entire supporter base as well. We may look back in 5 years and say what a great move by the club that was - then again, it may end up being an unmitigated disaster

This is not a fait accompli. Anything can happen in a few years. Sam might get another offer from another club before we are in a position to employ him or he might turn out to be a dud coach and remember Clarko was chosen ahead of some former Hawk players for the coaching job. People seems to think it's all OK as he will come back as coach some day, if that never happens will we still think trading him for peanuts was a good idea?
