Is shiels and gunstan current B&F winners?? Do they poll in the brownlow much ? I didn't see them even fire in the finals, I've been waiting for Gunstan to stand and be counted for ages no sign of that even with roughy out!

These rants would be more effective if you could spell Jack's surname correctly.

This is what I don't get, his want to go to Perth (be it player or coach). In the SEN interview you could sense the family has
made the decision that their imminent future is in Perth. Considering they are local kids from the sticks of Melbourne I
just don't understand.

If you can name a child Smith then anything is possible.

To all those trying to piece it altogether, just don't coz it is so f@*king wrong.

He is building a coaching resume.

Since I first heard this disaster I still think it's wrong.
Yes, Clarko had a chat to consider leaving early and play WCE first.
Sam also said that he'd be happy to stay.
I don't want him leaving, watched him since Box Hill days and was proud watching him play his 300th game.

If Clarko didn't want him to go then why suggest leaving early.
Lifelong members and supporters like mean do care that a club legend may player in new colors.
I'd rather he play out 2017 and be a one club player.
Then once retired he can coach elsewhere.

I'm shattered, guttered, sad, lost and in disbelief.

I so hope he stays and does not leave
:(

I'm trying to look at this without sentiment involved, which is rather difficult. However, we're bringing in two mids to effectively control our midfield for the next 10 years but they will need time to adjust, time to learn our style of play and gameplan, time to learn how teammates react on the battle field. They will need time to get up to speed and next year is when they'll need the most assistance.

Based on that, do I believe we can win the flag with our new imports with strong support from the likes of Sam Mitchell? Yes. Yes I do.

Do I believe we can win the flag next year under the same scenario but without Sam Mitchell? No. No, I do not.

Hence from my humble point of view, I feel this decision could very well be filed under the 'top 10' most stupid ideas ever to come out of the HFC. Is our salary cap looming that dangerously close? Are we trying to front-end the contracts of JOM and TOM to bring in another player next year? I say, let's stop looking at the age of the player in question and look at how he is performing on the field, one who could impact the game for another 2 or 3 years. Oh, and is our current B&F player.

It's the whole Michael Jordan trading scenario all over again. 'We can trade Michael (while at the peak of his powers) for a heap of great players and potentially win heaps of championships!'

Umm... great, but we're currently winning championships with one of the greatest players who ever played, and people want to trade that out to see how green the grass is on the other side of every fence surrounding us (and not knowing what they will end up with)? It was face-palming time when I heard Chicago supporters seriously making that call and I'm seeing a similar scenario playing out here... not with the trading but with the thought we can cover a true legend of the game with a bunch of newbie potentials. I can only hope there's some rationale that I'm not getting that sees HFC come out the winner here. Unfortunately, for the life of me I'm just not seeing it.

This is ludicrous. How you can question Gunston after this year's performance is baffling. You can't even spell his name right! I won't even begin to go into explaining what I mean ... especially with Roughy out. Gets my vote for a future captain. Forget Lewis. He definitely stood up & was counted in 2016 ... & 2015 ... & 2014 ...

I cannot stop thinking about this Mitchell move. Completely devastated.

I see people saying it's a win win.. it's a win for the eagles as they get an amazing player for almost nothing.

How is it a win for us? Or Mitch?

He's played his role at hawthorn and will always be a club legend, so making him happy by helping him have a plan for the future (coaching) then it's pretty much a win

I'm with you brother. I'm gutted. Really gutted. Mitch is (do I have to use past tense here? F me!) the heart and soul of this football club and one of the reasons I follow it so fanatically. Shipping him off with such abandon just feels like a slap in the face to all the die hards like myself. I just don't understand how it is a win-win. It seems to me that Clarkson has come in and given his blessing for Mitchell as a sort of good will gesture to the player and it's been accepted without either of them really appreciating what the impact of what they're proposing is on the supporter base. Clarkson feels that he's done right by Mitchell and Mitchell feels (misguidedly imo) that its for the best of the club. There seems to be a sort of acceptance that "they'll understand" but I just don't think thats the case because frankly I can't get my head around it. He is completely tarnishing his legacy for what? Hawthorn to gain 300k cap space and a meaningless (frankly insulting) compensation pick in the 50's. I would honestly rather he just retired now. It means a hell of a lot to me that he is a one club player. Look at images of Brereton running around in a Swans or Pies guernsey and you will see what I mean. I grew up idolising that bloke and it killed me as kid when he changed clubs. I still don't look at him the same way. Jarman, Franklin, Allen, Chick! They all became tarnished the minute they pulled on the opposition guernsey. It's bloody awful!

Really?

Mitch gets an extra year and an agreed transition into coaching in a different environment.

The Hawks get cap space and I can only think, for something big.

I get the feeling the club has said we cant win it in the next 2 years so it is all about planning for time after that. GWS will lose too many players so are not the threat everyone thinks.

Don't expect Hodge, Gibbo or Burgers to get another year.

This sounds like new game plan and serious rebuild.

Sam is 34. One season left.

Are the Hawks going to win the flag in 2017? With this move, the blokes in the know (Clarko and Mitch), think not.

If you remember Clarko's last presser, he commented how the game has changed again. He is thinking a reset of the game plan and it wont happen over one preseason. New blood over the next couple of years now. He is miles ahead of all of us, he is looking 3-4 years down the track.

I would back his/their judgement. Tipping Clarko has said to Sam, this job is yours when I'm done. Do your time and come back and take over.

The O'Meara deal will get done. Hawks gain 2 young midfield guns, lose one. 2 always beats one. Regardless of how good the one is.

Phase one of the rebuild is well under way.

The bloke kicked 11 goals in the 2013 finals and was second behind Lake in the Norm.

We all know what hodge is interested in he wants to be in the limelight the Media!! Good luck to him he should of retired this year he's gone, so many injuries... Then Sam prob would of stayed an extra year...

Good grief. Potting all sorts of players, the coaches, the club... In what sense are you actually a Hawthorn supporter? Do you like anything about them?

Seriously. Just stop. Please.

I honestly hope this is Sam's decision and not the club's.
Hello I am back after long Ban.
Put simply Very Bad Decision by the Coach and Club.
Foremost, if Sammy wanted to leave why would he commit to the club and sign on for next year to play for the Hawks as he has done on a yearly basis for the past few years?
Because he is very Happy at Hawthorn and knows he can still play at optimum levels whilst winning our B&F along the way at 34 years of age is proof.
If he wanted to head out West he would not have signed on to play again next year and Sam would have initiated the move!
Remember he stated he could have been knocked down with a feather when Clarkson informed him about this.
Moreover, Sam Mitchell is a player and coach on field and like Hodge that is a bonus on field for our playing group and team that no trade pick under 10 can buy!
This trade will only benefit West Coast and Not Hawthorn and if it suits Mitchell to acquire Monetary and Lifestyle betterment it was not Sam's idea.
Once again why did he sign again with Hawthorn.
Because he is Happy at Hawthorn.
So if he signed on for next year he is happy to play for Hawthorn and live again in Victoria BUT Clarkson planted the seeds of better retirement at West Coast when he was Happy at Hawthorn.
We as a club don't own ANY player anything because it is a privilege to play for our great club and after you come near the end of your playing career with 4 Premierships cups to your name Any player would and as Sammy Mitchell would remain Loyal and sign on as a Happy Hawker as he did and not seek the Bigger Pension because HE Loves Hawthorn and can still play at his best.
Also, Everyone Stop saying they wanted to move to the West when he happily did sign on to play with Hawthorn.
Clarkson has just gone Mad and Wild because Hawks don't OWN any player anything especially when we gave Sam a chance at the top level and come out a 4 times premiership player.
He is just also trying to be A creative genius at the expense of a Hawks legend.
Remember Hawthorn Culture is bigger than Any Coach and Player!!
Very wrong decision and any draft pick less than top 10 is wrong because Bookmark it "Sam Mitchell will play another 50-70 AFL games if traded to West Coast."
He is more imperative for Hawthorn players and team for our development, culture and on field development of our young players for the next couple of years because without Sammy Mitchell you can bring TM and JOM and lose Mitchell we slip big time.
Remember Doggies won a premiership without their Captain playing on field.
So how GOOD and important is Sam being a player and a Coach at the same time for us that NO draft pick less than 10 should be our aim.
Clarcko and Co you own Mitchell nothing and Remember you STATED the Veterans have had their day in the sun regarding salaries.
Don't sell our Souls and Culture because Sam Mitchell is Very Very important to our player development, culture and welfare that his playing career may be only 1-2 years life longevity but his LEGACY will remain like Peter Crimmins for ever at Hawthorn.
"Sam Mitchell from rags to riches"
To fat, to slow and can't kick but made it to Hollywood!
Stop selling our Soul and Culture!

Everyone is very upset, me included but this is no doubt to Sam's advantage. He will get a lucrative contract as player/Coach and given the number of years he has sacrificed for the club he deserves to pocket something worthy. See it from his perspective and no one elses, listen to his interview and you can see this is his decision. The fact there is a deliberate attempt to show it was Clarko's idea is to not tarnish Sam's legacy that he went for something that was more lucrative. Good on him, he deserves it and has earned it.

I completely agree. This smacks of Brian Lake MkII. Don't know about you but there were times this year when I felt like having Brian sitting at FB even at less than full fitness would've been the difference between a win and a loss, it would've allowed Gibson to play a more attacking role for starters.

Half way through next season I cannot possibly fathom how we will be saying "gee, I'm so glad we have that extra 300-500k cap space instead of a fit Sam Mitchell lining up at this bounce!"

Its all very well everyone getting jolly over O'Meara & Tom Mitchell but realistically neither one will be half as effective for us next year as Sam Mitchell was for us in 2016. So yes, I can accept that this is a long-term strategic move but if that's the case why the hell couldn't we allow Sam to play on with us another year and finish a one club player? If we needed the cap space so badly I'd have rather we traded peaheart Schoenmakers or a hack like Litherland. Instead we're giving away our best player for a shitty 3rd rounder at best and sent the message through the squad that nobody is safe.

Any joy I was getting out of this trade period just went up in smoke and it won't return.

Regular reader, rare poster.

This makes me feel sick. Whats it going to be like watching Sammy in the middle of the circle in the West Coast rooms belting out 'We're flying high'???

Completely fked up.

I'm thinking back to the Campbell Brown saga of 2009. I was ready to kill people. He stayed and then left for the Gold Coast the very next year. The club knew best.

Trent Croad in 2001. I wanted blood. This also turned out ok. The club knew best.

This one is even harder to stomach. Absolute champion. One of the top 3 hawks of all time. For a freaking 3rd rounder. We have a chance at a flag to farewell him with in 2017 FFS. What the actual FCK??????

I have faith in the club based on previous decisions. They knew best. But i'm really struggling with this one.

I wonder how many here would jump off a cliff if Clarko told them to.

I wonder how many here would actually respect the fact that Clarko is the main person responsible for our club not being in the mire it was back in 2005.

Imagine if someone told you 5 years ago that Sam Mitchell and Lance Franklin would be playing for two interstate clubs ....

Also not sure if this was said anywhere else but I distinctly remember on the Friday Rub a few years ago Damien Barret asked the Chief if there were any truth to the rumour about Sam being put up as trade foR JOG... it is funny how things work out that now he is being shifted out for cap space so we can get him
