Tasmanian Premier David Bartlett has cut loose former cabinet minister Paula Wriedt, who is recovering from a suicide attempt.

Mr Bartlett today said that after Ms Wriedt was unable to make a decision about whether she would return to Cabinet, he had decided to permanently re-assign her portfolios of Tourism and Economic Development.
Ms Wriedt attempted suicide on August 4 after legal proceedings were begun against the Government by her former ministerial driver, and lover, Ben Chaffey.
She had earlier been forced to respond to lewd comments by television personality Sam Newman.
The 39-year-old mother of two, who is estranged from her husband, said in her latest statement that she was continuing her recovery and remained under medical care.
Mr Bartlett said after talking to Ms Wriedt, her family, friends, political and medical advisers, he believed it was in the best interests of her long-term health, and good government, for her to relinquish her position as minister.
"This would allow me to appoint a new Cabinet and for her to free herself of the constant pressures of the questions surrounding her return to ministerial duties," Mr Bartlett said.
"Unfortunately, Paula finds herself in a position where she is unable to make that decision at this time.
"Therefore, in the interests of good government and, I believe, in the interests of Paula's long-term health and wellbeing, I have had no other choice than to make that decision myself."
