Teams San Francisco 49ers - The Niners

49ers will be issued last rites this week and the death certificate will be filled out with a week 14 lose.

If these things happen in the remaining 4 games then do not expect any turnaround under Shanahan until he trips over 10 bluechippers to fill his roster...

  • Brendel continues at centre
  • Puni not tried at tackle.
  • we see no snaps with Mason and CMC on the field at the same time
  • Pearsall remains 5th target
  • Campbell instead of Winters
  • Juice continues to get significant snaps even though we run so many empty backfield
  • etc etc

Jonny Del does an excellent weekly cut up of the 49ers playcalls and execution.

For the bystanders and devoted alike, Shanahans stubbornness is seen as the root cause of the teams struggles.

But if you look at this week's analysis, the stubborn play calling is less the problem to continuing to play stiffs like Brendel and appointing overwhelmed coaches.

If you can bare it, check it out on YouTube.

Is it stubborn, or just limited. There's no innovation to get guys open, just hope that something develops... And counterbalance with an elite D to overcome any offensive struggles

Both. Some of the plays in the video I referenced would have been big plays but Shanahans persistence with substandard players like Brendel is the combined cause.

It's like Shanahan is playing Madden and just expects the centre to play to the Madden player rating.

Kyle stubbornness with his so called guys is so infuriating. Guys like Brendel shouldn't be on a team let alone starting.

38th ranked centre in the league. Some effort with only 32 teams.

Like getting a zero on your English test when you get marks for spelling your name right.

Our biggest weakness 3 years ago on Oline was C and RT biggest weakness on Oline today C And RT

TBF, Brendel makes McKivitz look all pro.

Watching Brendel get beat by safeties and giving up on blocks is just horrible.

What does Shanahan see when he reviews the tape?

Are we sure he reviews tape ?

No way he misses Brendl being ass and deebo not separating if he actually reviews it.

Probably not but his play is so bad surely he can see it as it happens live.

Symptoms of a team that's given up....

  • procedural penalties
  • turnovers
  • missed tackles
  • not finishing blocks
  • drops

Other than that I think we are pretty good.

  • Regularly giving up huge gains off routine plays.
  • regularly getting stuffed at the line of scrimmage on Rush plays
  • WR not being open or able to separate

Everything is just way too hard at the moment

Back to back weeks of HAMMERINGS.

If we racked up 30+ points and held a team to 10, I'd be strutting around thinking "how good are we!".

What shows you the lack of spirit this year has been that even bad teams that have their own excuses can find weeks to fight and show something, we just roll over.

The Bucs had no WR and awful rush... They take it to the chiefs, and we came off the bye and only just snuck a win.

Put the Cowboys (who were awful) to the sword in the 3rd and lead by 17 and do.the only things you can't do to bring them back in to the game. We gave them the ball back with 3 minutes to go and a chance to win. Can do the simple things well.

We didn't make the Seahawks play at their best to beat us. Just an average game, with no repeated horrid errors and they find their way to a late game score. Meltdowns with 2 score late leads against the Rams and Cards. Just hopeless in games we should have smashed them.

There's a lack of pride in performance or a strong distrust of the team being able to execute so let's go down an ultra safe approach and wonder why things blow up.

This year has been so frustrating simply because we have piled incompetence on top of bad luck. What evidence? All three of our marquee offensive players who held out in the off-season are either on IR, heading to IR or should be on IR.

Anyway. The (should be too early) off-season shopping list:

Coaching:

- Special Teams Coordinator replaced. We should pitch a new reality show to Netflix called The Competent. It would centre on giving a group of every day, hard working people off the street a chance to win the 49ers Special Teams Coordinator job.

- New DC. Any body who 1) can read the momentum of the game 2) is either a great man manager or a brilliant tactician, can be both, but must excel at least one of these. 3) take calculated risks 4) can get a unit playing greater than the sum of its parts and not rely on pro bowlers at their disposal.

- Head Coach/OC. Find a mentor. Someone that doesn't cop Shanahan's rage for telling him his latest idea is bat shit crazy or that he should look up from his clipboard every now and again.

Personnel (draft/FA/re-sign/trade...I really don't care how):

- Defense:
- A rangey free safety (Brown makes too many mistakes and gets outmuscled too much)
- Re-sign Greenlaw (even if on one leg, his energy is infectious)
- Find a big space eater on the d-line interior, preferably 2
- Cut Campbell, Don't extend Ward, Cut Hargrave (depending on his appetite/injury recovery)
- A DE that is a legit threat opposite Bosa.
- Offense:
- A CENTRE who is capable of lifting more than 2 shopping bags at a time into the boot of your car.
- RT and then for good measure another RT. McKivitz is an OK backup. But we need to tackles this off season because as soon as we fix RT, LT will become a problem.
- Let Banks walk if he wants big guard money. Someone will be disappointed. Batch was actually pretty good today.
- There is no cap value in cutting Deebo, if he actually got fit and focused again I believe he can still be of value to this team, but as the 4th option not the centre piece.
- Kittle backup (is this really that hard considering I see good/serviceable TEs on just about every roster in the league?)
- Mix up the WR room and use the rest of the season to really test the 2024 rookies. Surely playing and targeting Cowing and Pearsalll in live action will give you a better insight into future needs for 2025? Nonetheless, a burner and a slot with speed is needed.
- Remove FB from the playbook and replace it with more 2 RB combos (have we ever seen Mason line up with Deebo or CMC this season in the backfield?)
- And QB. Im now out on Purdy. Too many tipped passes, inability to make tough throws requiring any sort of velocity, can't play in bad weather to warrant Tier 1 money. If someone else signs him then we get a pretty good comp pick....I think there is a reclamation project somewhere out there for the 49ers...if nothing else, Purdy and Jimmy G have shown you dont have to be all world to be successful in this team.
In general:
- it is obvious we are not just an aging team but we are a slow team. We have some of the quickest guys going around at LB, TE but no real speed at the burner positions. Must be addressed given we really don't know what we have with Pearsall, Cowing, Aiyuk's injury or Deebo's motivation.
- you are no longer the smartest man in the room Kyle. Humility and asking for help is not a bad thing....why is everytime something goes bad on the field the camera cuts to you with your head in your play calling sheet? Are you limited when you don't have an all pro roster?
Anyway, there is more to add...welcome thoughts, would like to see if we can get a consensus view on this board and then see how close to the mark we are over the off-season.

Get Warner on IR too. After the GB game (and realistically the Seahawks garbage) this team was never turning the corner. Folks may argue that mathematically were still in the mix, but there is nothing that I've seen this season that says we're close to being a playoff team, 1 won over a +500 team.

Shut it down. Treat it like preseason. Play the rookies, and starters that haven't produced the goodes, and reset for next year.
