What is with all the Eddie hate? People seemed to rake him over hot coals for being excited when Collingwood was up or dejected if they were getting pumped, yet ignore it when others do exactly the same. He had a pretty good mind for the calling of games as in when to get up and when not to.

Personally, I don't hate the guy at all. Just couldn't stand his commentary.
Tim Lane, when he gets on his soapbox can be pretty irritating as well.

Anyone is better than Eddie (If it's not Collingwood, I don't care) Maguire - even the TV static has more insight :D .
Seriously, I do not mind Sandy and hopefully 7/10/Foxtel? will keep commentators from calling games with their own clubs.
For example, I enjoy Dermie's commentry on games unless one of the teams are Hawthorn (he is reserved with his insight).
Lyon is straight edge, but he should dump Channel Eddie and go to a real TV station.
Bruce McAvaney is still the king of AFL commentry for me.

Landy, Morphett, Cometti, Mckenna, Scott and even Robertson - despite his anti Hawthorn bias, Roberts and Morphett were all quite good for entertainment value :thumbsu:

My personal favorite - Peter Landy - reeked class and professionalism in every call he made :thumbsu:

Tim Lane = the Jim Maxwell of Football – a decent caller but massively over rated.

Sandy Roberts is just god damned awful. Knows nothing about the game and as such he resorts to stupid "PR" type comments all the time in an effort to get some emotion into his crap calling.

Bruce can be annoying but he is the best caller of sport in Australia IMO. If they bring back Robbo I will organise a hit. If I ever hear that Carlton loving parastite again the terminator will be enacted to take him out.

Tim Lane is utter tripe, anyone who wants an insight into Tim Lane should read his articles in the age. The are so bad even a child could write them.

Robertson and Morphett were good if you enjoyed filthy Carlton scum love ins.

Sandy Roberts came up with a few very good lines of which captured the moment. I will never forget the 1990 Grand Final, Peter Daicos goals, "This is where he is at his best - the Master", said Sandy Roberts. I went absolutely nuts, believe me!

I can see it now, Didak goals to put Collingwood way ahead, which insists Sandy Roberts to call the line... oh well, at least I can dream of it.

Sandy Roberts " Quote - 6/4 4/6 6/4 4/6 6 all in the tie breaker "well you cant get a game any more even that that"

Sandy please tell us something we dont know not something already know !!! you aklways state the plane obvious.

Come on. The most plastic, bland, generic, boring commentator of all time. Hundreds of games without one insightful comment.

My favourite Sandy call was halfway through the 97 Bulldogs-Crows preliminary final when the camera showed a young Bulldogs fan in the crowd: "That youngster is wondering how the Doggies will go next week when they take on St Kilda"

.

Hobby farmer Sandy is the longest serving sportscaster in the country by far. He goes back as far as working with Ron Casey in the early years of Ch7's World of Sport which was a TV institution.

Before that he was a young DJ on a Colac radio station. Originated from South Australia. Is well liked by his peers in the TV industry.

"and now ladies and gentlemen, I'd like to introduce you to miss australia 1981... leanne cõck!"
That's the first thing I thought of when I read the title of this thread. :D :D

I have a feeling that was at the Melbourne Cup, or another major horse race, wasn't it?

Now who's the one who called mick mcguane's buitifull running goal in the 90's because it goes along the lines of "phil manassa like goal by micky mcguane", just totally destroyed what potentially could have been a great peice of commentary you listen to it on highlight clips now and then just cringe. Im mean who could possibly stuff that its given to ya on a platter.

Robbo come on down.

And what is so bad is this bloke is all class compared to sandy and drew.

The Bulldogs should have made the GF and you know it ;)

"The Footy Show" at its peak, forced seven to ALLOW the commentators to put humour in thier call, back in nineties.

That was the worst thing to do because none of them are funny.

Commetti could be in a subtle way but others tried to force it.

Big mistake!!!!!!!!!!!

Sandy was excited about the name "Galloping Hatrack" for that tall Fremantle player.

I remember the look on the players face when he was asked about it on a panel.

About the same as mine.

Ex footballers and commentators want to be funny but just dont have it. Its hard to listen to.

At least Brereton and Lyon dont try. Thats thier one redeeming quality.

The thing about a lot of sandy's one liners were that if you hear it once its has a bit a laugh in it but again and again it just looses its appeal, like the galloping hatrack one the first time he said it, its a good oneliner but then he'd persist and persist, its the same if you heard "leo barry your a star" again an again it would wear very thin, and thats even coming from a sydney supporter. And sometimes it seemed like sandy thought he was at a stand up comedy club not at a game of footy hed just try and try the problem was there was no audience to heckle him. And don scott he was just plane boring people talk about eddie but this guy should have been classed as hawthorns number 1 ticket holder for the cheer squad, i still never forget the final in sydney against hawthorn it was just plain barracking.
