SANFL 2007 -- Round 10 Wrap-Up

Hi Footy fans...

Two things came to an end this weekend. One was a streak of victories, the other a streak of losses at a single ground. Both of those ended at one game! Plus, there were some nice crowds turning up at the games this weekend, three of the four matches attracting 3000 - 4000 SA footy-heads... going to show that state league football in South Australia is still relevant to the regular football fanatic.

So lets see what happened this past weekend in this week's edition of the SANFL Wrap-Up for Round 10.

First up, we take a look at the clash between the Redlegs and the Eagles. The players from The Parade were out for their fourth win in a row, and although only leading by seven points at the end of the first quarter after booting 4.3 to the Eagles' 3.2, the Redlegs broke the Eagles in half in the following term. Through men like Jamie Vlatko, the visitors landed home 7.2 to 1.3 in the second term to lead by 42 points at half time. But the punishment didn't stop there for the reigning premiers, the Redlegs continued in the third term, although the gap could have been worse if they didn't get five goals from ten scoring shots. At the final change the Norwood lead was 65 points. The Eagles final quarter effort would not bring any rewards, they kicked 5.2 to the 'Legs 3.1 to reduce the loss to 52 points. The Redlegs, who now sit in fourth position, named Kieran McGuiness as their best while the Eagles' Bernie Vince received best afield honours.

In what would turn out to be a poor choice by the ABC, the cameras went over to Broadspectrum Oval for the match between the Bloods and the Panthers. After the debacle on their home patch against Sturt last weekend, the Panthers early on looked as if that was going to be carried on as West got out to an 11 point lead at quarter time. But noooooooo... it wasn't going to happen today, the Panthers kicking 7.2 to West's 2.4 to take a 17 point lead at half time. Poor decisions on field, especially West's kicks finding only uncontested blue and white jumpers a number of times had West coach Wayne Weidemann staring holes in his charges. When play resumed for the third term, South continued to run away from the Bloods. Despite poor kicking on goal -- 4.7 to 1.1 -- the Panthers found themselves up by 41 points at three quarter time. The visitors kicked a further 4.4 to the home side's lousy 1.4 to post a 59 point victory. South named Kyle Archard as their best while West's true standout was Luke Donaldson.

In what should have been the match shown on TV, the top two teams in Sturt and Central District engaged in battle at Unley Oval. The Dogs were expected to walk right over the Double Blues and keep their two streaks -- their unbeaten run this season and the one on Blues turf extending back to 1985 -- but the home side had a surprise for the Doggies. After leading by one goal at quarter time, they then extended that to 15 points by half time after kicking 4.1 to Central's somewhat wasteful 2.4. But the Dogs kicked back in the third term, reducing the margin to just one point after kicking 6.3 to Sturt's 4.1. The final quarter was a fizzer, the Dogs looked like they were going to hold off Sturt long enough to win after kicking 5.2 to 3.1. But the Blues weren't finished by a long shot. While keeping Centrals away from their goal, they threaded through three goals for themselves. The Double Blues ended the streaks to the tune of seven points. Although Brant Chambers was champion in goals with his seven big ones, it was Simon Feast who picked up best on ground honours for the Blues while Charles Slattery was best afield for the Dogs.

In the final match of the round, over 4000 people turned up at Glenelg to watch the Tigers play the Roosters on the holiday Monday. Things started off rather equally, with the Tigers taking a four-point lead at quarter time after scoring 4.2 to North's 3.4. But after this, the Roosters just went to sleep! Glenelg just ran away with it from here, starting with a 5.4 to 2.0 second quarter which saw the home side up by 26 points at the half-time break. Whatever Mark Mickan tweaked in the player line-up was working a treat, when the game resumed, the Tigers kicked further 6.3 to North's disappointing 2.2 response. At three quarter time, Glenelg were out to a 51 point lead. Despite a last minute show of fight from the Roosters, who kicked 6.1 for the last term, the Tigers didn't enough damage and outran the Roosters to win by 48 points. The Tigers named Ben Fisher as their best, while North named Heath Younie as their best afield. Jarman = not happy.

ATTENTION EAGLES FANS
Despite the Eagles loss, the heritage jumpers are still up for grabs on eBay.

So until next time... see you at the Footy!

That was the worst effort I have seen from a Rooster side since the regular ass whoopings of the early 2000's. Really looking forward to seeing if they respond in a positive manner this week in a match that could be crucial in the scheme of where both teams might end up on the ladder.

Jimmy I've seen Sturt twice this year, once on the tele when they looked fairly average against the Eagles and also at Prospect where they struggled to kick a goal for 3 quarters. Hopefully I don't jinx them again cause I'd love to see Port continue their slide down the table.
