Hi Footy fans...
HAAAAAAAAAAAAAALELUJAAAH!!! Thanks to a poor choice in computer software by the big wigs in Victoria, SA footy-heads enjoyed an AFL free weekend and as a result almost 17000 people turned out to SANFL matches across three days. AFL idiots and nerds be praised... from Friday night to Sunday afternoon, Rivalry Round re-kindled some old rivalries that have laid dormant, others bringing a lot of memories back.
So lets see what happened in the SANFL for Round 12...
Friday night mayhem at The Parade kicked off Rivalry Round, with the Redlegs facing a rampaging Blues outfit. A fourth win on the trot was at hand for the Double Blues mob, the only team to defeat the Bulldogs this year. The visitors began proceedings by keeping the 'Legs to just three behinds while getting 2.3 for themselves to be up by 12 points at quarter time. But the Redlegs were about to be eating dust as the Blues rammed home 5.2 to 2.4 to extend the lead to 28 points going into the long break. Both teams came back to the field with a inaccuracy bug, they both kicked six behinds a piece! Sturt did, however, manage to boot three goals to one to put the margin out to 40 points at the final change. There was only pain from here for the home side, the Blues bagged a further 5.4 to the Redlegs' 2.2 to win by 10 goals. That would have gone down like a red balloon for most of the 7000+ strong crowd, home fans seeing red... pardon the pun. Simon Feast was named best for Sturt, while Norwood named James Gallagher as their best.
The last time these two met in a grand final, it was a year in football no-one would forget in South Australia. This rivalry was rekindled on Saturday afternoon as the Magpies and the Tigers locked horns at Alberton Oval in the ABC Match of the Round. Glenelg finally found some devastating form last weekend against West, and again started very well with a 4.1 to 1.4 scoreline at quarter-time. But the on and off again Magpies fought back and found themselves level with the visitors at half-time after booting 4.4 to the Tigers' 2.1. The third term was more tightly contested on the scoreboard, but the Magpies were the ones ahead by two points at three-quarter time. But at the end of the game, there would only be disappointment... for BOTH sides. The Magpies were leading by eight points going into time on, but after a couple of behinds and then a last gasp goal to Glenelg, you would have been able to hear a pin drop as the scores would read 80 points a piece at the final siren. Magpie Daniel Elstone's 11 tackles was enough to bag best afield votes, while Glenelg named Richard Douglas as their best.
Later that day up in the northern suburbs, Hamra Homes Oval was a bit out of sorts, but good enough for night footy as the Bulldogs faced the Eagles. The Eagles rather average form would continue to haunt the reigning premier, the Dogs getting out to a 17 point lead by quarter time after kicking 4.1 to 1.2. Having several key team members out of the side definitely wouldn't have helped the Eagles' cause, Tim Inkster was gone within minutes of the start. With Mark Passador also out, the Eagles didn't have much to kick to. The Dogs booted another 4.1 to the visitors 1.3 to be up by 33 points at half time. Not much went on the third quarter, but a rare highlight happened for Dogs fans in this quarter, a spectacular bouncing goal from a very acute angle had them uttering "holy @#$%" chants. The margin was extended to 37 points going into the final change. The Doggies sealed the deal for victory no. 10 with a 5.3 to 3.1 final term to win by 51 points. Ian Callinan was named best for Centrals while the Eagles named Bernie Vince as their best.
In the last match to close up Round 12, the Roosters headed south to Hickinbotham Oval to face off against the Panthers. Last time these two teams met, heavy rain marred a contest that ended in a draw at Prospect. The Roosters weren't going to be denied this time as they romped out to a 29-point lead after a 7.2 to 2.3 first quarter. North would add a further 5.4 to South's 2.1 in the second quarter, which saw the visitors stretch the gap to 51 points by the half time break. Both sides bagged 5.5 a piece in the third quarter, which would have disappointed some Roosters fans seeing as they had dominated so well early on. No change to the lead at three-quarter time. The final quarter was the only time that the Roosters were outplayed and outscored, but the damage was already done. The Panthers kicked 6.2 to North's 4.2 to give their score a little more credibility, as the visitors won by 39 points. James Allan was the best on ground for North Adelaide, while Souths named captain Clay Sampson as their best afield.
