Hi Footy fans...

In six days, it all kicks off again and the South Australian National Football League brings in the 2010 'Be-Active' Premiership Season with an all new advertising campaign aimed at bringing a younger breed of football fans into the state league football fold. And how could they ignore it? Where else but the SANFL can you get so up close and personal with your heroes? That and the league's standing as a high quality competition which continues to deliver time after time and known as the best outside of the national competition. Once again, modern day powerhouse Central District is the hunted team, the 2009 premiership may not be the end of their reign at the top of the SANFL food-chain.

Some new coaches, other coaches switching clubs, a continued influx of interstate talent as well as some old faces making a return should spice things up. But at one point during the pre-season, there was a high probability that a few thousand fans would be missing after one of the competition's most recognisable clubs came under threat and is still under that dark cloud of uncertainty. We'll get into that later, but first lets see how your team fared in the recruitment department.

YOUR CLUB -- Ins & Outs
CENTRAL DISTRICT
The sheer power of the Bulldogs saw them complete a decade of dominance which culminated in their victory in the 2009 Grand Final, their eighth flag from 10 premiership playoffs since 2000 and a new scalp on the wall in the form of Sturt, revenge for their 2002 loss. The bulk of their 2009 squad will still be there, but one man who has been there for the whole dominant period will not be as Matthew Slade has decided to hand up the boots. Along with him go Jonathon Giles who goes to the Double Blues and six-time premiership player Yves Sibenaler, who has taken up a job in Darwin. Coming into the club is pocket-rocket James Boyd from South Adelaide and Tasmanian ruckman Cameron Milne, who featured well in the National U-18 championships.

INS: James Boyd (South Adelaide), Cameron Milne (Lauderdale TAS), Jay Nash (Power listed), Jack Gunston (Crows listed), Brian Donnelly (Crows listed / Glenelg).
OUTS: Jonathon Giles (Sturt), Daniel Menzel (Geelong), Ben Nason (Richmond), Matthew Slade, Yves Sibenaler, James Moss (retired).

STURT
They went into the Grand Final with plenty of confidence, hoping to repeat the feats of the 2002 premiership team, but were quickly cut to ribbons by the Bulldogs leaving first year coach Luke Norman to do some hefty soul searching. As expected, their best young prospect was jumped on by the AFL, Jack Trengove would eventually find himself going to Melbourne. He wouldn't be the only one though, the Gold Coast came calling for Michael Coad, he will play VFL football as part of their preparation for AFL 2011. But they have managed to snaffle talent from their SANFL rivals, Salim Hassan, John Hinge and Jon Giles have moved into Unley as has Toby Thurstans who has made Sturt his home for good.

INS: Salim Hassan (West Adelaide), John Hinge (Glenelg), Johnathan Giles (Central District), Jasper Pittard (Power listed), Toby Thurstans (Port Adelaide).

OUTS: Michael Coad (Gold Coast), Jack Trengove (Melbourne), Matthew Payne (Qld), Dane Avery (Bute), Nick Smith.

GLENELG
They missed out on the Grand Final by just one kick in the Preliminary Final, after a season that showed even more promise than those who contested the Grand Final! Minor premiers, a Stanley H. Lewis trophy, an undefeated minor round run of 15 games -- 14 wins, one draw -- in the lead up to finals, only to be knocked out in straight sets. Many Tiger fans were left fuming at a wasted 2009. An exodus of players for this year will hurt the Tigers, but the most unbelievable exit was that of Brett Backwell, who was sacked for putting Northern Territory outfit Waratahs before the Tigers, even though their seasons would never fully cross. On the bright side, Matthew Bode will make his return to Brighton Road and following him in is Geelong's Kane Tenace.

INS: Kane Tenace (Geelong), Matthew Bode (returning), Chris Curran (North Ballarat Rebels), Sam Shaw (Crows listed), Todd Dickinson (Queanbeyan ACT).

OUTS: Brett Backwell (sacked), Adam Fisher (Mt Barker), Lucas Block (Mt Barker), Chris Hall (Mannum), Justin McConnell (North Gambier), John Hinge (Sturt), Michael Liebelt, Tom Holmes (Mt Gambier), Lachlan McGregor (Langhorn Creek), Matthew Duldig (Angaston).

WOODVILLE-WEST TORRENS
The Eagles were out to do it for outgoing mentor Ron Fuller, but after accounting for the Roosters in the Elimination Final they would go down swinging in the 1st Semi by 10 points. The Eagles will now be under the eye of former Adelaide Crow and Southern Districts NTFL coach Michael Godden, who inherits a club with a smorgasbord of AFL listed talent. The Eagles struck some gold this year, Scott Welsh coming back to SA from Victoria after an AFL stint with the Western Bulldogs. They've also raided some rival SANFL clubs, Craig Parry one of the notable arrivals at Oval Avenue. But they've lost some of their best firepower though, 2006 Ken Farmer Medallist Mark Passador has hung up the boots, as well as Ken McGregor and Brad Dabrowski.

INS: Scott Welsh (Western Bulldogs), Craig Parry (South Adelaide), Aaron Day (Glenelg), Seb Guilhaus (Glenelg), Luke Thompson (Crows listed, Geelong Falcons), Ben Grieger (West Adelaide), Jay Schulz (Power listed).

OUTS: Ken McGregor, Brad Dabrowski, Mark Passador (retired), Peter and Robert Fiacchi (North Eastern FL), David Westbrook (Kangaroo Island), Zac Hier (Riverton), Byron Sumner (Sydney).

NORTH ADELAIDE
The Roosters didn't make it too far into finals football, eliminated in the first week by the Eagles to the tune of 11 points. Not the kind of first year that coach Daniel Healy would have had in mind, but some strong recruiting in the off-season could be the catalyst for a more forceful finals charge in 2010. Michael Wundke and Henry White have returned to Menzies Crescent from the AFL, while Luke Ivens overseas break should hopefully see him return refreshed and ready for action, while Daniel Elstone comes in from the Port Magpies. The AFL draft took away Luke Tapscott who is off to Melbourne and Jesse O'Brien has shipped out to the Brisbane Lions.

INS: Daniel Elstone (Port Magpies), Luke Ivens (returning from overseas), Michael Wundke (North Melbourne), Andrew Moore (Power listed), Henry White (Western Bulldogs), Eljay Connors (St. Kilda), James Bennett (ACT).

OUTS: Luke Tapscott (Melbourne), Jesse O’Brien (Brisbane), David Clarke (retired), Ben Schwarze (Sorrento).

WEST ADELAIDE
The fortunes of West Adelaide improved somewhat in 2009. Instead of another wooden spoon, the Bloods lifted enough to take themselves to sixth on the league ladder. This year, those fortunes could take them into the top five as the Coburg connection spearheaded by coach Andrew Collins has netted them more recruits from the VFL. One of those is other half of the Caruso brothers in Natale, joining sibling Fortunato Caruso. Travis Ronaldson and Jarrod Silvester also come in from Coburg. In the outgoing list, Salim Hassan, Damian Cupido and Stephen Bailey will be sorely missed, add to that the young talent snared by the AFL.

INS: Travis Ronaldson (Coburg), Adam Hartlett (Northern Bullants), Jarrod Silvester (Richmond / Coburg), Natale Caruso (Coburg), Scott Harding (Power listed).

OUTS: Stephen Bailey (retired), Taite Silverlock (Essendon), Nick Westhoff (Richmond), Jack Carter (Collingwood), Salim Hassan (Sturt), Damian Cupido (North Albury), Matthew Martin.

NORWOOD
The Redlegs are probably in for another season to forget, a seventh place finish only made less painful at the end of the minor round when they pulled off the upset of the season, defeating eventual premiers Central District on Norwood turf. The Redlegs will not be adding any new faces to their team roster, a salary cap breach saw the SANFL come down hard on the team of The Parade, the league imposing a recruitment ban for Season 2010. It gets worse, almost a dozen frontline players have left for greener pastures or retirement. The only recruit that has been allowed for the Redlegs is Stuart Bown, leaving incoming coach Nathan Bassett to perhaps dig into their youth reserves to fill spots if injuries become a problem.

INS: Stuart Bown (returned to club).

OUTS: Scott Borlace, Kris Massie, Luke Jericho (retired), Roland Ah Chee (Gold Coast), Matthew Panos (Western Bulldogs), Kenrick Tyrell (NT Thunder), Jamie Vlatko (work), Nick Jackman (Burra), Jack Juniper, Brendan Littler (overseas).

PORT ADELAIDE
An eighth placed finish for a club so used to success is far from acceptable. In fact, one would think it would be cause for riots! But there would be no time for finger pointing, as the darkest chapter in Port Adelaide's history was looming large over their future. The Magpies are in some deep financial strife, a merger with their AFL counterpart was denied only a month ago and it isn't known how long the club can last, even though over 6000 people have answered the call and signed on as members. The Magpies have regained the services of Luke Slattery, Shane Biasci, Michael Gates and Cameron Miller, while Corey AhChee has returned home to Darwin and Daniel Elstone has gone to North Adelaide. They are among six regular starters that have left. How will coach Tony Bamford cope with the knowledge that he could very well be the last coach of the Magpies? Stay tuned.

INS: Tim Walsh (Hawthorn), Luke Slattery, Shane Biasci, Michael Gates, Cameron Miller (returned to club), Cameron Cloke (Power listed), John Butcher (Power listed).

OUTS: Corey Ah Chee (retired), Daniel Elstone (North Adelaide), Jesse Stringer (Geelong), Brad Murray, Joel Perry, Justin Perkins, Jordan Barham (returned to Victoria).

SOUTH ADELAIDE
Finally we come to the 2009 wooden spooner. Its been 46 years since the Panthers have collected an SANFL premiership flag and new coach Ron Fuller is hoping to turn things around for the 134-year old club. They have put together a long shopping receipt in the recruitment department, with several Victorians making their way down to Noarlunga. Three recruits come in from VFL club Williamstown -- Guy O'Keefe, Xavier Gotch and Dylan Joyce. Andrew Horn and Nick Liddle arrive from Coburg and AFL listed duo Daniel Talia (Crows) and Daniel Bass (Power) come in via the mini-draft. On the down side, James Boyd and Craig Parry have left for other SANFL clubs, while Jason Torney, Tom Hateley, Matthew Smith and Ben Neagle have all retired.

INS: Daniel Talia (Crows listed), Daniel Bass (Power listed), Guy O'Keefe (Williamstown VFL), Kade Klemke (Essendon via Murray Bushrangers), Josh Taylor (Port Magpies), Sam Livingston (Murray Bushrangers), Taylor Whitford (North Launceston), Andrew Horne (Coburg), Nick Liddle (Coburg), Xavier Gotch (Williamstown), Dylan Joyce (Williamstown).

OUTS: Jason Torney (retired), James Boyd (Central), Craig Parry (Eagles),
Mitch Farmer (Richmond), Tom Hateley, Mat Smith, Ben Neagle (retired).

2010 HIGHLIGHTS
The season will kick off this Friday night with the first of three night games at City Mazda Stadium. The West Adelaide Football Club will light up for Friday night mayhem which will hopefully boost crowd numbers for the Bloods. North Adelaide, Norwood and Port Adelaide will be their opposition on those nights. Coopers Stadium will continue to be a mainstay in Friday night football with the Redlegs staging four night matches at The Parade. Thebarton Oval's replacement lighting system is not operational, the Eagles had hoped to use them for some night matches but this is unlikely until 2011. First round twilight football will also happen at the Bay, the Tigers will face Norwood on Saturday March 27 with a 4:10pm start.

Anzac Day football will not be restricted to just the Grand Final re-match. The Bulldogs will face the Blues on Sunday April 25 at Hamra Homes Oval, but later that day the Redlegs will play the Magpies at Coopers Stadium under lights. The return bout at Alberton in Round 13 will determine the winner of the Williams-Gallagher Trophy. The Double Blues will again take SANFL football to the country when they play West Adelaide in Murray Bridge in Round 10. There will be no interstate football for South Australia this year, the Victorians and Western Australia will fight it out and we will have to wait until 2011 when SA goes to Melbourne. The season will culminate in the Finals Series, which commence on Sunday September 12 and the Grand Final to be held on Sunday October 3, all will be held at AAMI Stadium.

So brace yourselves people... six days and counting. Lets see what's happening in Round 1!

Friday March 26 @ 7:40pm
West Adelaide vs. North Adelaide; City Mazda Stadium, Richmond

Saturday March 27
South Adelaide vs. Sturt; Hickinbotham Oval, Noarlunga @ 2:10pm
Glenelg vs. Norwood; Gliderol Stadium, Glenelg @ 4:10pm
Central District vs. Port Adelaide; Hamra Homes Oval, Elizabeth @ 6:30pm

Sorry Eagles fans... you have to wait one more week!

So until next weekend... see you at the Footy!

YOUR TRIBE IS CALLING!

Good bloke too, nominated for the draft a few years back, but was unsuccessful, had a few years playing U/18's for Sturt and won a premiership, and last year won a Premiership with Broadview.
