Hi Footy fans...

There was a considerable crowd drop compared to last weekend despite avoiding a clash with the AFL. Around 6000 spectators going missing with a figure of over 11,000 people fronting up at their club's matches this past weekend as opposed to the near 17,000 from the season openers. Even worse still, there's something rotten at one club in particular. There was a massive thumping imposed over the course of the weekend's action and as a result, crowd numbers for that team may take a further tumble and on the field it may get worse before it gets better. But I digress... there's a whole season still to be played, plenty of time to fix said issues.

Welcome to the Round 2 edition of the SANFL Wrap-Up.

We kick off the weekend's action with some Friday Night Mayhem, down at the Gliderol Stadium in Glenelg where the Tigers hosted the Magpies. These clubs shared the points from last year's two games, with the Tigers taking out the season opener at home by 17 points, followed by Port's 50-point back-hander in Round 14 at Alberton. The Magpies made a strong start to the season, taking advantage of an under-manned Crows while the Tigers were downed by the Panthers away from home. The Tigers started quite well against the more fancied Magpies in the opening stanza, only inaccuracy on goal letting Port off the hook. Glenelg scored 4.4 to 3.2 to lead by eight points at quarter-time. The Tigers' were more accurate in the second quarter, kicking four goals to the Magpies' 3.1 to stretch the gap to 13 points going into the long break. The Tigers seemed to go to sleep in the third term, after kicking three of the first four goals for the second half it would be the 'Pies in front at the final change. Altogether Port scored 5.2 to Glenelg's two goals to see the visitors up by seven points at three quarter-time. There was a frantic final few minutes as the Tigers threw everything they had left at their old Grand Final nemesis, but despite snatching the lead late on in time-on, the Magpies re-took the lead to win by three points in a 3.3 to 4.1 final term. Jarrod Lienert was voted as Port's best, the Tigers named Marlon Motlop as their best.

The rest of the weekend's matches took place on Sunday afternoon, the first of which takes us to the Prospect Oval where the Roosters hosted the Bloods. There was a division of the points for these clubs last season, with the Roosters winning by 22 points in Round 4 and the Bloods by 20 points in Round 10, those being the very few highlights of their respective 2017 efforts. Both sides lost their matches last week, the Roosters were belted at Elizabeth while the Bloods showed some fight in a losing effort against the Eagles at Richmond. But with the unfortunate loss of one of North's longest serving trainers, a flickering light became a maelstrom of flames and Westies were about to get torched. The Roosters' first quarter was an all-out blitz, they put the foot to the throats of the Bloods from the outset, scoring 8.4 to three behinds to establish a 49-point lead by the first change. Inaccuracy in the second term slowed the Roosters' run to a leisurely jog, but their advantage wasn't going to shrink anytime soon. A further 4.5 to 1.2 saw the gap stretch out to 70 points by half-time. The Bloods were a rabble of skill errors and very few moments of brilliance. They would be kept goal-less again in the third term, adding a feeble three behinds to North's 6.3 as the gap ballooned to 106 points. The Roosters saved the best until last, ramming through a further 7.2 to 1.6 in the final term to take a percentage-boosting 23-goal win. Keegan Ramsey's six goals bagged him best on ground honours for North, the Bloods named captain Thomas Keough as their best. The aftermath? An immediate recall to Richmond for a heated lecture from new West coach Gavin Colville.

For the third match for the round we're now off to the Maughan Thiem Hyundai Oval in Woodville, the Eagles facing the Bulldogs in a clash of former Grand Final rivals. In last year's encounters, the Eagles and the Bulldogs each scored victories away from their home grounds. In the 2017 season opener, the Eagles swooped into Elizabeth and took a 47-point win, but it was the Dogs that were one of the instruments of the Eagles' eventual downfall after they won by 20 points in Round 18. They both came out winners from last week, with the Eagles having a tough hit-out against a then-plucky Bloods. Accuracy issues were a continuing concern for Centrals, who would find themselves down by 10 points at the first change. But that deficit would blow out to almost eight goals by half-time, the Eagles scoring 6.3 to a lousy two behinds to set-up a 47-point lead at the break. It would prove to be the game-breaker for the Eagles, but that didn't mean the Dogs were totally finished. Poor shooting on goal would continue to plague the Doggies, but by three quarter-time that half-time gap would be reduced to 32 points after they scored 4.6 to 2.3. There wasn't going to be a grand comeback in the end, despite the Dogs outscoring the home side 2.3 to 1.4 the damage was already done as the Eagles secured a 27-point win. James Boyd was back to haunt his former club with his best afield honours for the Eagles, the Dogs named Kyle Presbury as their best.

We now head into the inner southern suburb of Unley and into the Peter Motley Oval where the Double Blues matched up on the Crows. The Blues premiership defence got off to a rocky start last season, beginning with a shock two-point loss to Adelaide in the opening round, but payback eventually came as the Blues doused the Crows by 52 points in Round 11. An underpowered Crows outfit were smashed from pillar to post by the Magpies last week, while the Blues had to fight for their two-goal win at The Parade. The Crows looked much better early on in proceedings, finishing the first term leading by a point after a 3.1 to 3.0 opening quarter. But the reigning premiers were soon back in the driver's seat, kicking 5.2 to the Crows' lowly 1.1 to take a four-goal lead into the long break. It would be slim pickings for the Crows from here onwards, the Blues dominating the match without any signs of relinquishing the lead. Despite having three more scoring shots than the Blues, Adelaide's shooting on the sticks left much to be desired. The Blues scored 5.1 to 3.6 as the deficit crept out to 31 points by the final change. Sturt shut the door completely in the final term, kicking a further 6.1 to 3.1 to run out 49-point winners. Zane Kirkwood, ever the leader by example, was named Sturt's best while the Crows named former Sturt premiership player Patrick Wilson as their best afield.

The last match for the round takes us to the inner east of the city, to the Coopers Stadium in Norwood as the Redlegs locked horns with the Panthers. As has been the case on more than one occasion over the years, the Panthers have been able to pull one over the Redlegs on their home deck. They did that last year in Round 4, nicking a four-point win. But the 'Legs repaid the favour in Round 10, taking an eight-point win at Noarlunga. Coming into this match, Norwood were unlucky not to steal points from Sturt as they went down by 12 points while the Panthers' second half made the difference against Glenelg. Only a goal separated them at quarter-time, both sides struggling to make real scoreboard impact as Norwood scored 4.3 to the Panthers' 3.3. But the rot really set in for South in the second term, kicking 1.8 while the 'Legs scored 4.1 to head into the rooms with a 17-point lead at the half-time break. When play resumed, the home side went on the attack. Although wasting several chances to really inflict some damage on the scoreboard, they rammed through 7.6 to South's 4.1 to take a 40-point lead come three quarter-time. Three more days rest hardly helped the Panthers in the end, the Redlegs finishing off 47-point winners with a last term score of 4.3 to 3.2. Sam Baluderstone was Norwood's best on ground, the Panthers named Nick Liddle as their standout.

TRAGEDY STRIKES DOUBLE BLUES
For the second time in as many weeks, the SANFL community was in mourning. Sturt women's division player Ellen Maple lost her life in a car accident only hours after playing in a winning effort against Glenelg. The following statement is from the Sturt FC.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Sturt Football Club is saddened by the tragic death of one of our inaugural senior women’s player Ellen Maple.

Ellen was a past Best & Fairest with Mt. Lofty Football Club and Premiership player with Norwood Football Club in 2016/2017 Season. Ellen along with twin sister Tess moved to play for Sturt in 2017/2018 – our first season in the SANFL Women’s League. A determined, skilful midfielder Ellen will also be remembered as the first person to kick a goal in the SANFL women’s competition.

One of the competition’s leading possession players, Ellen was named in our best players in seven of her eight games this season. Our thoughts are with Ellen’s family and friends including players and officials from our club, Norwood and Mt Lofty football clubs.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

A life taken all too soon. From all SANFL fans here on BigFooty, we send our condolences to the Sturt FC and the Maple family. May she rest in peace.

It was printed in the paper on Monday that there was over 3k at Unley on Sunday. It has to be a typo as it was the smallest crowd I’ve seen there for a very long time. I mentioned to a mate that we’d struggle to get 2k from the look of it.

On the flip side, appeared to be a lot more than 2k at the bay Friday night, would've guessed closer to 3k-3.5k, Hard to tell with one grandstand missing.

The most cringeworthy moment of the night was when 50 or so Port fans started the Power chant.

Weird day of footy, Westies turn around a 140 point loss and win out at Elizabeth. Eagles and Port battle out a draw, where the Eags don't kick a goal until the last quarter. South beat Adelaide. The mighty Bays surprise all and comfortably knock off the legs. I say comfortably but it was definitely game on in the last, Norwood seemed to chuck away the structures and play on at all cost. Was a great game of footy, Terry Milera sublime again with 4 goals.
