Footy is back and its about damn time.
We are one week away from the start of the 2007 South Australian National Football League Premiership Season and the beginning of the Eagles first premiership defense in 14 years. Last year, the Eagles finally managed to slay their four-time assailants, the Bulldogs, by over 12 goals to bring back to Woodville their second SANFL crown as a merged team since 1993. But this year may be a bit difficult for them, this season they will be missing a good portion of their premiership heroes. But then again, the Bulldogs have managed to pull it off once in the same situation.

The heaviest recruitment drive is probably Port Adelaide's, raiding not only some opposition SANFL club stocks but also those of Victoria's VFL & AFL club ranks. One recruiting coup to date would have to be that of Central Districts acquisition of Ian Callinan, who in 2005 bagged three separate honours in the VFL including the Liston medal. That and the return of Adelaide Crows hero Ben Hart to the Roosters will bring some real quality to the ranks of the SANFL clubs. Plus the Double Blues have a new coach, former Bulldogs premiership champion and North assistant coach Rick MacGowan.
But this year, can the Bloods lift off the bottom of the ladder? Will the transfer of Damian Cupido and several interstate and country recruits make the difference between finals and a spoon? And what about the Panthers? Last year's surprise packet could give some added grief to their opposition, losing three players but gaining three in their place. Two of them have made their way across the border from Carlton, Ian Prendergast and Cory McGrath. The blue & whites also honoured one of their most staunch supporters, with Noarlunga Oval re-christened as Alan Hickinbotham Oval after the man behind Hickinbotham Homes.
SEASON HIGHLIGHTS
Season 2007 will kick off with the traditional SA rivalry of the Redlegs and the Magpies, this coming Thursday night at The Parade in the first of five night matches at Coopers Stadium. Central District will host five night matches this year, the first being against the Roosters who just edged out the Dogs in their last clash under the lights of Hamra Homes Oval. The Anzac Day Grand Final Re-Match will not be at Adelaide Oval because of redevelopment, so the SANFL has seen fit to utilise Thebarton Oval for the match between the Eagles and the Bulldogs. The ground will also be host to three other Eagles home matches this year. Adelaide Oval is off limits to the SANFL until Round 13, with only three minor round matches to be played there in 2007.
Country games have made their way back into the SANFL fixture, with two games heading out of the city. The Panthers will play the reigning premiers at the Encounter Bay Oval in Round 1, while the Bloods head out to the Riverland to host the Bulldogs at Berri Oval in Round 9. The Queens Birthday afternoon at Glenelg has almost become tradition here in SA, the Tigers hosting the Roosters at Challenge Recruitment Oval in Round 10. Also at different times of the year, some of the SANFL clubs will dust off an old jumper reminiscent of the AFL's heritage round. No State League contest this year, the rotational agreement sees Victoria and WA square off this year while SA sits it out until next year.
FINALS SERIES
Again all finals except for the Grand Final will be played at Adelaide Oval on Sunday afternoons, with the big game scheduled for Sunday October 7 at AAMI Stadium. Will the Eagles be there again?
