On a serious note, this indicates to me that a verdict has been reached.

So the question remains; 'why delay'?

If the verdict was 'not guilty' then surely they would lift the provisional suspensions already, with detailed reasons to be given on the 31st.

Personally with this far out notice I don't think a verdict been reached yet. Think it's more to do with giving some certainty to the players as to when a verdict would be handed down, both those charged and top up players who are currently contracted until the 18th.

that throws open an interesting hypothetical, they serve the 6mths backdated, play out the season until an appeal to cas is heard, say the appeal increases the sanction by another six months which is served again in the off season, hypothetically they could end up serving 12 months but only miss a handful of games.

yes it does. But presumably an AFL appeals board could sit fairly quickly in the first instance.

I also starting to question if ASADA would even appeal a six month penalty. Presumably this requires substantial assistance discount and how can this be applied with out the prosecution agreeing to it.

If given through strange backdating fair enough.

You would have to lean in favor of a guilty verdict due to the time between now and the 31st. The verdict would be known now, all that needs to done is the writing up of the reasons for the guilty verdict for each player.

How can you forecast how far down the track they are?

.
Because everyone within the legal fraternity, be they judges or barristers alike, pretend their function in society holds much more difficulty and gravitas than it actually does? ;)

if the players are to be suspended you would need to sign up top up players. Surely that can't happen in 2 days (given flights, travel time and preparation needs to be taken into account). Therefore, if the AFL know the verdict, and it is guilty, then surely negotiations would have to occur asap, and I don't really understand how you can expect that not to get leaked by someone along the line.

I don't really buy into the whole conspiracy thing around timing, but if you did you could make a case for it being more likely they will announce a not guilty verdict.

But as I said, I don't buy into the timing being meaningful debate. It will just be interesting to see the process at work.

Flights and the like are neither here or there with block bookings as normal and I bet the top up's have extension provisions for the event of bans. Still inhouse atm so no need to open up.

Well if they were still deliberating how would they know for sure they could announce a verdict on the 31st.

Yeah this. They know.

The delay would be to allow them to finalise the writen reasons for the decision. It would also be in 'consultation' with the AFL for a date that worked for them the best.

It is clearly obvious that by announcing a date, their deliberation has ended. They have reached a decision. Now comes the formulation, of which they are certain will be completed and ready to announce on March 31.

Edit: see malifice above

Better to over state than run out of time given the outcome.

Have the top ups signed on longer than the 2 initial NAB games? We now know they need to play in the 3rd so that will be sorted.

If a guilty verdict is handed down will 4 days be enough time to get new contracts drawn up for the top ups or will the contracts all be handled in the next 3 weeks and be called upon if necessary?
