So, back to the point of this thread... is he injured at the moment, or where's he been during the preseason?

Thanks Tommyk for bringing it back.

I didn't mean to start a thread on how good he is or will be etc.

Just wondering where the hell he is, and thought some of the training goers, and or those closer to the inner sanctum might be able to shed some light.

Schoey played in the first useless NAB half-games over west.

I really don't know why he wasn't played in any more pre-season games, I haven't heard of any injury.

I thought he played quite well in the games that I did see, he just didn't do any of the pointy things that made him noticeable (aka kick goals himself).

He's still just a youngster. He's later than Shiels or Savage for example. Don't put too many expectations on him. Give him another year or two.

Incorrect Shoey was drafted as a first round pick as an top ager 18yo, Sheils was a second rounder as a bottom ager 17yo as was Savage who was a 5th rounder as a bottom ager 17yo in the 2008 draft.

Exactly. Schoey is just five months older. He's KPP, and they take a lot longer to develop unless they are outstanding freaks like Buddy and Dermie.

I say again, give him some time. Hasn't helped that he has been pushed into the backline when he's played forward so much. Bit like WhiteX, who has played in the centre so much but been asked to play back flank then forward flank when pushed into the senior side.

The way I read it you meant later in the draft.
I agree he is developing later than those two.
I think he suffers from having a changing role. It will be interesting to see what role he is being developed for in 2011. I'd like to see some breakout games at Box Hill as he unlikely to be gifted AFL games anymore.

I think Schoenmakers will make it, but as a midfielder! He has an elite kick, he just does not have the confidence yet.

Our savior down back will be nimble Sam Grimley. He will be the next Dustin Flecture.

Remember this post. In two years you will be calling me a genius.

I cant see why Shoey will not make it. His reaction time worries me but everything else looks OK.

I think the days of the big guys walking into AFL are gone. The strength of the senior guys is greater now than ever before. It takes time to get to that level.

dont think so genius more like n.f.i

As a backman, he will need to be able to play against the Gorilla forwards to get a game. His height and strong frame lend itself to playing that role.

Otherwise, opportunities playing forward will be very limited for him as they were for Dowler and Thorp.

IMHO, I am sensing he will struggle to make it if he can't cut the mustard down back.

I just wonder whether they would be better lettting him slim down a bit and get used to the pace of the game with his natural speed helping him find space and get more time to use the ball. At the moment, he seems to be struggling to adjust to the pace of the game, at the same time as looking slower and less agile, I assume because of his increased weight.

???

Just need some patience IMO. If Hawthorn were rebuilding he'd be playing every week assuming fitness and we'd be talking about his upside, but because it's premiership mode greater expectation's seem to be placed on him. What this probably means is most people actually doubt Gibson and/or Gilham, hence the urgency.

It takes most midfielders 50-70 games to really belong, he's a 20 y/o KPP player with half that. He needs to play 30 odd games over the next 2 season's, and then we'll know what we've got. He needs improvement in all aspects of his game, but the most obvious one is mental which every player faces. Schoenemakers needs to get to the stage where you just play the game, something we finally saw Murphy start to do last season, it was the same thing.

I think Murphy is the perfect example here. The difference being Schoe has a lot more natural talent and athletic ability. With time he will become a player - what that timeline is however is hard to judge at the moment.

Have thought this for a while.

His speed and fitness are one of his strengths, especially for a guy his size.

I'm hoping this year he'll be used in a different role, more of a third tall or flanker/winger, where he can use his excellent footskills without quite as much pressure as the backs are generally under.

Shoey will be a gun. The kid is huge and one of the by product was a little loss of mobility. He is growing into his body and we as supporters will see the benefits soon. Stratton was simply brilliant last year at 21, shoey is yet to have is 21st and many write him off. He was thrown around in regards to positions over the last 2 years. This year expect him to settle into a position and then make it his own. This kid is developing and unlike the dowler who really never got offthe ground or thorp how could not get on the park will be a serious 10 year player for the hawks.

Yeah not sure why the doubters over Schoen. Sure he has coughed it up a bit this will improve in any number of ways.

We all know his defensive qualities are good. His application to the task is very good, both in hard running, tackling etc, and also in concentration

He will have to learn the defender's mindset of just hacking the ball out of the 50 instead of trying to pinpoint a pass every time. Another way to clean up the disposal is to get him to handball more. Another way is to keep him as a CHB only, so he plays further up the ground.

Saw a great game by him last year where he beat his opponent and in the end he was running off through the midfield with the ball and using well by foot. This is what I think he'll be, a running CHB.

I particularly agree with the loss of mobility part.

For a bloke with supposed elite endurance from draft camp testing it is not evident on the field. He has an up and down on the spot running style and is slow on the chase because he appears to blow up after repeated efforts.

In terms of his development I will not be unhappy if he has a solid year at VFL level. He is not an AFL player at the moment as he isn't up to the level fitness-wise and this in turn erodes his confidence - or so I am hoping.

I reckon he will come good fitness-wise after another 2 or so full preseasons. Once he can keep up with the pace of the game I think we will also see his confidence rise. He still looks like a bumbling foal out there. He really needs his body to cop a hammering fitness-wise for another couple of years before he is truly ready. Most talls do take time as others have pointed out before they feel like they belong.

At this stage in his career he doesn't demand the ball and from what I have seen is hesitant to even take the ball on occasions preferring his teammates to get it. I think this will slowly change over time but not overnight. In a few years he will look around and realise he is one of the more experienced heads at the club and take on some more responsibility on field.

I would not be unhappy if he played on a wing at times this season to get his running power up.

He needs to show some gradual improvement this year and then some serious improvement next year and to be staking claims on a spot in the AFL side.

The one worry I have with him is his reaction time - he appears to be a slow thinker at times. Sometimes you can't change this but with other players it goes when fitness levels and confidence rise.

He is potentially a beautiful long kick of the footy so has some really good qualities which mean we should be sticking with him in the medium term as we are still putting in the hard yards with him.
