Reasons to go Number 1:
(1) Plays the hardest position on the ground (CHF) - probably the best kid for that position for a while
(2) Smart player
(3) Skillful player (Best mark in the draft, very good kick)
(4) Courageous and hard working player
(5) can also play CHB/Ruck
(6) Good endurance
(7) Well developed and already playing well against men in the WAFL

Reasons not to go Number 1:
(1) Doesn't play midfield
(2) Doesn't have huge pace off the mark
(3) Probably isn't the right type of player for Essendon or Carlton, if type comes into it.

I can only think of only two reasons, and they're both iffy.

1) Gibbs is Hirdish
2) Hansen is Victorian

Gumbleton is the most impresive junior i have seen in a long while.. I think he is mor then worthy of the number 1 pick.. Hope Hawthorn get him, with him we are set!

Gumbleton could very well go No1 if Essendon do get the Wooden Spoon. A player of his ilk don't come along often and he is the sort of player you build a team around. The only fact I see that may sway the decision is whether Essendon go for a quicker fix to their problems, ala going a Bryce Gibbs. There is still a time of developement in Gumbleton and he will take a while to fulfill expectation.

with the draft being so deep in talent.

essendon really cant go wrong imo.

take KP with their first pick, then take 3 mids with pick 17 and 19 and 36.

will be a massive injection of talent brought in2 their club.

gumbleton firms for number 1# with each passing day

With Gumbleton, it will depend on how much potential improvement the recruiters think he has in him. Is very highly rated in the West but I wouldn't imagine either team over here would get a look in at him.

He has huge improvement left in him, he has alot of 'filling out' to do, and has admitted he finds it difficult to match KPP for strength at this stage. That will simply come with time.

Has struggled to have an impact in his two games since the carnival, has been getting double teamed at CHF.

Waterman moved him into the ruck late in the game last weekend v Swan Districts, where he ended with 17 hitouts - and in the end you could say he was a solid contributor.

The week before he only had 11 touches (inc. 3 FA's), playing against the top team, although Peel were infront by 14 points at 3/4 time. But again was opposed to two Subiaco defenders at times.

Isnt entirely his fault, as delivery into's Peels inside 50 isnt the best, but since returning from Melbourne, has continued to work hard in the forward line providing a target.

I think that regardless the big concern from Essendon, Carlton, etc would be whether or not these guys want to stay around in two years time, with Bryce returning to SA and Scott to WA. This alone could make Lachlan Hansen a much more appealing target

How do you/me know they are the type to want to go home?

If they were guns but did end up wanting to go home, the clubs aren't just adequately compensated but usually over compensated.

Bryce Gibbs looks to have his head on straight, and seems mature enough to know that moving is a part of the process - I don't think he is the risk.

However, his dad seems to be one of the "hands-on" types, and that could be an inconvenience.

Despite that though, there's very little chance he slips through to Port Adelaide past Essendon, Carlton, Hawthorn and the Kangaroos, who'll likely finish as the bottom 4, so we'll all get to see whether or not the go-home factor comes into it.

I mean, in reality, 90+ per cent of interstate draftees never leave just to go home, and 99% of the time, if they do, fair value is attained by their club.

Look at some of the recent cases:

Josh Carr for picks No. 11 (Adam Thomson), No. 27 (Pat Garner) and No. 45 (Justin Sherman) - Excellent deal for Port Adelaide, although the picks used on Pat Garner and Justin Sherman were traded to Brisbane for Aaron Shattock and the pick to draft James Ezard.

Scott Thompson for No. 13 (Matthew Bate) - A solid deal for Melbourne, picking up an early teens pick in a solid draft and picking up a good young player.

Des Headland for No. 3 (Jared Brennan) and No. 19 (Troy Selwood). - Absolute highway robbery for the most frustrating player in the league. Brennan still has star potential, and Selwood is an honest go-er.

Obviously its pure speculation, but the Crows have both been burnt and benefitted by the go home factor, so I imagine there must be a bit of hestitation from clubs using the 1st and 2nd pick in the "superdraft" not wanting to lose these gun players in two years time, however that is an advantage that Victorian teams have, eg if Gibbs wants to go to Crows, they have to SATISFY Essendon wholy, or Gibbs enters the P/S draft and could go anywhere, whereas for example Meesen has 10 club he could go to in P/S draft and still return home. But then Cooney was supposed to go home as soon as two years were up, and he seems quite content three years on.....;)

Spot on the go home factor is a bit of a worry. At the Hawks there's so many WA players. Look at the talk about Franklin and Williams already not to mention Chick and Mcpharlin that have already gone back to WA.
It's my biggest worry which is why i would like to see Hansen at the Hawks.
