Thanks. Teacher asked how it was possible, by using a digital set of scales once, to find a bag full of fake coins that weigh 11 grams among nine other bags of real coins all weighing 10 grams, to identify the bag with the fake coins in it, if the scale is only used once.
I said, if the real coins weigh 10 grams, then any number of them will always end in 0, so take 1 coin from bag 1, 2 coins from bag 2, 3 coins from bag 3 etc until the tenth bag, the last digit on the scales will represent the number of of coins that came from the fake bag, thus identifying it.
He stood up and shouted this out. arseh*le!
Didn't tell the teacher that I'd solved it, just took the life savers. As I said I've moved on.
BTW the most difficult thing in that puzzle was the whole grams thing. It was only the year before that we moved on from stones, pounds and ounces.
