12 rookies and 10 returning players signed in the off season, good effort and keep hitting those retired players, they’re a good source of recruitment! You can look on Hate’s sfa+ for retirees, still plenty around the site.

Also join up to the many competitions people run here and support the people having a go doing something on the board. It's a game and most people just wanna chill and have some fun.

Is 12 rookies (from only 8 clubs) really worth celebrating though? Seems like a huge red flag, as it's significantly the lowest in league history:

I don't see the point of being negative and generally clubs bring more in during the season. I'd rather encourage that, it's not about celebrating. It also gets harder and harder every year and that's not because clubs arn't out there trying hard to find rookies. 22 bought in this season no matter where they come from is a good effort.

Last season there was only one rookie added after squad submission.

There's a difference between being positive and putting your head in the sand. Yes, I'm happy that there are twelve new faces in the league, and I wish them well. However, the league should be aiming for 30+ rookies every season, and for the past two season we've been significantly short of that. Something needs to change, and clubs need to be more proactive in recruiting.

Why not take your ideas on getting 30 rookies a season to committee then?, I can tell you how many we tried ourselves and nearly all of them had already been asked or just not interested, negative stuff all over the board doesn't help that.
We also had no tours and BF does not have 1000 people joining every week like the good old days, there's a hell of a lot more competition out there for people on socials.
Nothing to do with celebrating and nothing to do with anyone sticking their head in the sand.

Anyway, good luck to everyone in their recruiting, there are still people out there who want to join or rejoin! Hopefully we will have some tours and promotional stuff going on again soon and that will help.

Cut list sizes down to 25 and we might see better turnover of lists rather than teams freely pocketing 8 posters in their bank and not feeling the need to replenish stocks as we once used to.

But yes, spot on. Very alarming figures Serial. I'd be curious to know how retention levels have been over this time too though - I sense we experience more and more people wanting to stick around and be a part of their club (and this place) more than we used to in the past with many 2-3 season bursts from players before disappearing into the abyss. There's perhaps a silver lining in keeping people interested more often.

Some take it a little too seriously.......but that's what the rules are for.

Bring in a 14th team so the OOB's (Tigerturbulance) have their own Expansion Cup in Heritage Round

Reduce squad sizes, max 10 out per Club is crazy high

Sitting out for Round 1 : 72 players

Using the Roys as an example 22 players minimum for all teams we're still at 46 out on Sunday's and that's without said tours, promotional stuff for the league

Recruiting / Tours / Promotional work for League should work hand in hand with Expansion discussion and squad sizes

If you cut the teams back to 22 we could have each team nominate the players they are willing to cut from their list.

If there was player/s of experience willing to start another team they could start with a list of 60 players they could chose from. This certainly a lot easier than starting an expansion side from scratch.

Players not selected could stay on their original team list if clubs want to keep them in hope they will return or become active.

I think we discussed a tour of Poland at some stage Mobbs ?
Mt Buller would dominate that!
Like everything in the Sweet FA, the Roys are qoot years ahead of the competition. We invited the lesser rest of the league to join us in a friendly v Poland in 2021 :

  • Neither having much reason to brag, Glogowski and Lore were hard to separate - though Glogowski was slightly more effective. - 0m from 93 to 93.
  • In quite a tussle, Horynek had the better of GWS Goose. - 36m from 57 to 93.

8 teams had an ave. 15+ posters each round last season, no harm in dropping that and having a proper reason for recruitment - promotional push outside of getting numbers to 26-30 in a Club

Demons 18.9, Bears 18.8 etc etc by adding another team they may loose a couple but if anything it's a actually a good thing it will give their respective LG's an opportunity bring in those outside the 20 which is completely fine + recruitment push to get back to the numbers that Clubs are at currently

Roys 17.4 ave, brilliant job by Mobbs with all the work he's done since returning and without TDC
Also removes selection dilemmas with low squad sizes

I gave the following table to the Committee last season.
On the left there are the 347 players, and how many players reached how many posting miletsones for the season.

Fanning across to the right are models for each suggested preference of how many players per team we'd like to post in match threads per game (with some uppy-downy - it's an average).

Example, if you go to "More than 100", we see that 141 players posted over 100 posts for the season. Fanning to the right we can see that if we "need" all 20 named players to post, we can afford a 7-team league. If we only desire 10 players to post in a match thread per team, we can afford 14 teams.

(The grey highlighting is just chasing what's needed for a 14th team)

so what your saying is fold the dragons and let have a 12 side competition

Whats our end goal? To try actively grow the league or sustain it?

If we are trying to grow it, we aren’t getting that from Bigfooty. 12 is a pretty dire number and considering you have a fair chunk that lose interest, we will be lucky to get 1-2 long term posters from a rookie group of 12. One option would be to extend recruting efforts outside of Bigfooty, so reddit etc. This would be a lot harder since they would have to sign up to the site first, and most would probably not bother. Would be worth trying thoughz

Another thing is is the lack of creativity in media, match threads are still ok, but media has no creativity anymore. Where is the storylines , the rivialries, the banter? Now its just qooty comps, which can be fun, but those aren’t going to get new posters in.

I think we just need to accept the league is on a downturn, and just simply enjoy what time it has left. Itll still go reasonably ok for a while yet, but I don’t see anymore growth left.

Yes

Club board recruitment drives (via stickied threads that properly explain the SFA) are worth a go. Can't remember the last one we did, but even if you could nab an extra 1-2 posters from each club board during the offseason, the league would be in better shape.

Most people come over to Sweet with little in the way of inductions and have to navigate a quite fast-moving and confusing place pretty much independently, hence the low retention and engagement rate. A stronger effort to explain what makes this place great (league history, stats, rivalries, user-generated content, drama, Headless etc) would be a good way to focus efforts.

Still think there are some untapped avenues on BF to explore before we implement a more complex external effort. People are seldom going to follow external links, set up a BF account, navigate to the board, join a team and then post. There needs to be a level of investment in the site first.

Is 12 rookies (from only 8 clubs) really worth celebrating though? Seems like a huge red flag, as it's significantly the lowest in league history:

Season 1 = 143
Season 2 = 103
Season 3 = 120
Season 4 = 144
Season 5 = 85
Season 6 = 121
Season 7 = 150
Season 8 = 86
Season 9 = 88
Season 10 = 50
Season 11 = 70
Season 12 = 46
Season 13 = 40
Season 14 = 53
Season 15 = 43
Season 16 = 75
Season 17 = 63
Season 18 = 72
Season 19 = 64
Season 20 = 31
Season 21 = 34
Season 22 = 51
Season 23 = 70
Season 24 = 35
Season 25 = 34
Season 26 = 50
Season 27 = 31
Season 28 = 36
Season 29 = 30
Season 30 = 31
Season 31 = 32
Season 32 = 34
Season 33 = 33
Season 34 = 33
Season 35 = 28
Season 36 = 27
Season 37 = 19
Season 38 = 12*
and half of them were from the wonders i think

Last season there was only one rookie added after squad submission.

There's a difference between being positive and putting your head in the sand. Yes, I'm happy that there are twelve new faces in the league, and I wish them well. However, the league should be aiming for 30+ rookies every season, and for the past two season we've been significantly short of that. Something needs to change, and clubs need to be more proactive in recruiting.

Those numbers took a tumble with the Dragons being found out to have a known alias on their team.

Davs other 7 rookie accounts therefore were canned.
