Adelaide v Port Power
Friday 30 September
7:30pm
Adelaide Oval

We start the second half of the season with a Showdown under the Adelaide Oval lights.

Adelaide are coming off an all time time with a complete and utter demolition of GWS, while Port Power finished strong, but ultimately fell just short of Gold Coast.

While Port only have a win against Sydney and a draw against Carlton so far, they have been quite competitive in all of their games, and haven't been blown off the park in any of their games. Most of our wins have been slow burns, either overruning good teams or holding off good teams, and destroying the one side we've played so far that won't make finals. Can we continue this hot form over Port Power, or will Port Power cause an almighty upset?

Big spread in the front of today's 'Tiser about the game - two full pages (Pages 2 and 3 at the front) and also full end page. Details about the game, and places in Adelaide you can socialise before and after the game. Sponsored by South Australia A New State of Mind. Newstateofmind.com.au

THERE might not be any hate as far as Erin Phillips is concerned, but the Port Adelaide skipper expects plenty of heat when the Power clashes with cross-town rivals Adelaide in the highly anticipated inaugural AFLW Showdown.

Former Port champion and current men's assistant coach Chad Cornes added some spice to the last Showdown of the recent AFL season when he publicly expressed his hate for the Crows.

Cornes addressed the Power’s AFLW squad on Tuesday in a bid to fire up the team ahead of Friday night’s historic local derby at Adelaide Oval.

While Phillips said Cornes’ passionate speech about his experiences playing in the heated rivalry gave the players goosebumps, she still couldn’t bring herself to hate her former teammates.

I think Chad missed the memo that AFLW is a totally different beast to AFL.

From the players collectively knowing the battle it’s been to get to this point to the atmosphere at games is very different (much less hostile).

Plus Erin won a flag with us 5 months ago (among everything else she did for the club).

It’ll be a hard fought game but it’s going to be anything but hostile.

I find the whole "we hate the Crows so damn much" thing that Port does every Showdown kind of weird, particularly here in the context of AFLW. Imagine being one of those women who has to sit there and listen to Chad Cornes fire up about how much he hates the Crows, and you know that you are expected by the club to internalise the message.

First of all, really Chad? You earned millions of dollars to play footy against them. These poor women are taking unpaid leave or working night shifts around training just to play footy for five figures, and you're going to talk about how much you hate the Crows? Do you really expect that message to get through to them?

Secondly, it's kind of... pathetic. Right? You hate them? And the players should hate them too? Is that the emotion you want in their minds as they go out to play, hatred? Do you think that is going to translate to better football? Did the Magpies of old spend their time puffing up about how much they hated their opponents? No, they just went out knowing they were the best and let their footy do the talking. They were the ones inspiring other clubs to hate them because they were so damn good.

How about building up the rivalry? Or if you must talk about hatred, what about talking about how the Port supporters hate the Crows? Do it for the supporters, etc. No, apparently you need the players themselves, personally, to hate the Crows? Half of them probably either grew up as Crows supporters, or came here from interstate.

If I had to attend a team meeting and some overpaid fossil from a past generation came in to tell me how much I'm supposed to hate my competition, I'd think it was the saddest thing I'd ever seen.

Honestly a little nervous

Original clubs vs expansion cross town rivals 9-1-0

Dont want that first loss.

Stupid Freo. Could've taken one for us a few weeks back.

I'm nervous too. I remember very well the first Showdown, back in 1997. It was an awful feeling after the game.

And as much as we think Chad's ridiculous, who knows if his message has sunk in? It may well have done. I guess we'll just have to wait and see.

ETA: I think one of the big differences is that Port Power resented the Crows because they felt cheated out of being the first SA team in the AFL, whereas this time around Port Power chose to go a different route, so shouldn't feel the same resentment.

I've seen bit of Port Powers games. They have looked terrible against ordinary sides. They have a few serviceable players. If we play our best I predict a 6 goal + win.

stupid having it called a port home game when their are equal rights to tickets. It was louder when crows ran out. And they will be playing never tear us apart , haha
