Round 5, and here we are at the final head to head matches before two teams make their way through into the decider. Both these teams remain a mathematical chance to make it, although WA would have to pull off a miracle, while The Counts are well and truly in the box seat, despite losing to the favourites, Vic Metro, in a spiteful clash at the Moyston Reserve.
Despite coming in with a game up their sleeve on 2nd placed South Australia, this clash still looms as a must win game for the Counts. They will take great pleasure from knowing a win will see them deny their nemesis South Australia the chance to win back to back finals and book their own place in the decider. They will be licking their wounds after a close fought loss on their home patch, and expect them to come out firing at Perth Stadium with a place in the final on offer.
While WA spun the magnets looking to mix things up, as skipper Tarkyn_24 made some big calls in match committee, striving to find a winning combination to reverse their poor showing against Vic Metro. However the move didn’t pay off, with their form continuing south against the reigning champions, seeing them all but bundled out of contention for the final with a poor performance in their penultimate outing. Playing for pride this week, can they rekindle the kind of form that saw them start the competition with that winning feeling here against the Counts?
Players to watch
Carson Dial
The Furies firebrand was one of few WA players to stand up at Adelaide Oval, as he impressed across the half forward flank, proving a handful for South Australia and amassing 18 touches, 5 marks and a handful of score involvements. With skipper Tarkyn_24 already showing he has no fear of changes and has rewarded standout performances this series, the future Furies leader could well find himself in the guts this round.

The former Bears skipper and shock S29 Baghdad recruit JWS plies his trade in club land at full back, and after beginning the Series XIV on a wing for WA, he soon shifted back to his customary key back role. Having resumed his position in charge of the WA defence in Series XV, he would have been as surprised as anyone to find his skipper move him into ruck rover against SA looking for a different chemistry midfield. One of WA’s best, picking up 2 votes for the Series MVP award albeit in a losing side, JWS collected 16 touches and 3 tackles in a strong showing inside. Will he retain his spot in the middle in this final round of Series XV?

The Demons vet was another to find himself shifted into the WA engine room for the crucial clash against South Australia on Friday, making the move from the half back flank playing a familiar role to that he performs for his club, into the centre. In muddy conditions, he picked up 12 touches and 3 marks and was one of WA’s best on the disappointing loss. Likely did enough to hold onto his spot and will be looking to take his game up another notch if WA are to pull off a win against the odds.
Sparkle
Few would have expected the Swamprats second year player to assume the vice captaincy at the Counts in Series XV, but he has performed admirably, supporting skipper and long term Counts rep ClarkeM. Having booted 5 goals in Rd 4 in the Counts close loss to Vic Metro, he will be looking to once again lead from the front against a dog hungry WA. Talk around the camp suggests he may find himself moving from full forward into the ruck for this one, where he successfully plies his trade at his club.

The Gumbies utility had a strong performance last week against the Metro side, with a near best afield effort for the Counts, he amassed 16 touches, 4 marks and 3 goals and was lively all day for Vic Country in the loss. Having not bothered to trouble the scorers the last time these two sides met, he would be one at the Counts who looks like peaking at just the right time to find himself in a prime mover position should they qualify for the final next week against Vic Metro.
TJASTA
The last time these two sides met, the former Furies skipper put in an impressive all round effort, picking up 19 touches, 5 marks and 2 goals as he went on to be one of the Counts best on the day, as they comfortably accounted for WA in Series XIV at home. This time around they’ll be heading over to Perth, and while the Furies talisman has not enjoyed his best series in Series XV, his skipper has telegraphed a possible shift on to a wing for this must win clash. Could push to seal a midfield role in the final should the Counts win this one and make their way through to face Vic Metro.
