I was very uncertain of the big irishman's future after the cloke incident... although i doubt many of us weren't.

At the game on sunday I for once thoroughly enjoyed watching Setanta play and felt comfortable with the ball in his hand.

He seems to have changed. What stuck out was the way he moved. He seems to know AFL, he knew what he was doing, he was reading the play. He moved like he has played AFL for a long time, something that i always thought was missing in previous years was that he looked very out of place.

What do you guys think? Did anyone else notice this?:thumbsu:

I liked him when he wasn't contesting in the ruck. His general skills are a lot better.

I think he is best suited for defence. I'd give him a go on Buddy for a little bit.

Was better and I have to say the forward line looked the place for him. I reckon he has said stuff it, I have to throw everything at this now. He is playing like he is not so terrified of clanging which lets him play more relaxed.

No way, that is just misplaced rhetoric from gorilla starved Carlton supporters.

The guy wants to attack. Putting him in the backline is part of what derailed his career in the first place. Sure, he's a big man who can run into space but he doesn't like to have to worry about an opponent. Let the opposition worry about him. He is still a little excitable at the moment - you see him shake his body in desperation as he runs, but he seems to be starting to know where to run a bit more and creates his own space rather than waiting for others to do the work for him.

If Carlos can grow at CHF there are a number of +ves. Very hard to match up on with his combination of height and pace....unlike most men of 199cm who have the turning circle of the queen mary, Carlos can turn on a dime. THe last few weeks in the Ants have seen him embarass smaller opponents by turning them inside out.

Yep, your observations are spot on. Setanta has changed massively. He looks to have dropped a lot of weight and has regained than natural athleticism and speed. Doesn't get overly excited anymore, stays focussed, and understands the team structure and his role in it. His defensive efforts are a lot better and more consistent. He played the lead up role very well, and created opportunities for others rather than trying to take everyone on and win the game off his own boot. He's basically matured. His skills are very good in fact. Kicking looks almost natural. He was a nightmare for the Bulldogs defenders because of his height and speed. That was his best game. For me this was the best story to come out of this game. He is a naturally attacking, creative footballer, with unbelievable athleticism. In hindsight it was a mistake to try to turn him into a one-dimensional huge spoiling KP defender. :)

The Cloke incident had the opposite effect on me - it confirmed to me that he is what we need. He has a little white line fever coursing through his veins - we need a little shit in our team. Would rather have a player hit Clokey when he is his opponent in a practice match than refuse to hi-5 him when he is his team-mate.

Loved the double kick off the ground to goal - luckily no one's head was over the ball for the first tap or else he would have put it through the big sticks :D:thumbsu:

Actually I was doing match ups and forgot about him, I wonder if Ratts will put him on Franklin he has the agility and Body size and strength to match him unlike Thornton/Bower/Waite would he be worth a shot?

Playing him down back was the only stability that he had throughout his career and it made him a much better player throughout that time.

What derailed his career was Pagans inability to continue playing him in one position, allowing him to learn his trade. Playing him in the ruck due to lack of ruck stocks while he was playing so well down back is what hurt him imo.

I still believe his best position is in the back half, playing on the bigger boys but also attacking in a Scarlett like manner when appropriate. Has always struggled to find consistency while playing up the ground.

Yes I noticed the difference in him.

But the other thing I loved was when he and Cloke high-fived, it was nice to see.

Will be watching him with great interest.

Love him, always have always will! But the moment when hit hit eddie lace out in the 3rd was simply awesome...how was the agility of the big guy to turn his oppenent inside out...as the coaches have noted he now has his spring back after struggling late last year and throughout the preseason with leg issues!

Early on he was much more suited to the backline then the ruck. I thought it was the move to ruck that did him more harm. This week he really did look more comfortable and ran around much better.

I thought he looked pretty good in the forward line with Cloke pushing up the ground more. Would like to see him given more opportuntiy around CHF as I think this will utilise his athleticism better than down back. Doesn't need to be a full time ruckman either.

I've only seen brief highlights of sunday's game, but the irishman looked good.

We all know that he's got rare athletic qualities - that's the reason he's still at the club.

I hope he now gets a string of 8 games so we can see if he really has made a genuine leap forward. It'd be great if he has, because he could be a real weapon for us up forward or even as a tall winger.

Yep, taking a Keating-esque approach I would suggest this is the brainfart he had to have.

He had a back log of crazy that was impeding his 'Im 6'5, really ****ing athletic and should be able to get the gist of this game' neurotransmitters. Now that he has cleared this backlog by kicking Clokey in the date he's good to go.

the only problem with playing him as a CHF is that he is incapable of taking a contested/pack mark which reduces his effectiveness. He can do the lead up role OK but the positive is that he is an awkward player (in many facets!) and hard to contain because he is athletic and can pop up and do something not expected from a 199cm player

hmm someone starts playing a game he has hardly ever heard of and people winged he can't read the play and hasn't got the skills... Funny that. He's gonna be a real weapon for us with his height, pace and strength. Him like Waite, if used in an attacking role will provide matchup headaches for the opposition like Kouta did. Too tall for a fast opponent and too fast for a tall one. It's a great thing to have...

Very much looking forward to watching him on the weekend (if i can make it....).
big chance of beating the hawks this week. IF the occasion is not enough surely a very ill Pratt will still help the boys get up...

Did everyone notice our defence had remarkably better structure with jammo in it? Not many of those defensive lapses such as letting players slip into dangerous positions alone such as when we played essendon.

He did more than the coaches would have hoped from him, I suspect.

He was no good in the ruck as he just doesn't time his jumps well at all, but as a CHF I thought he showed some very encouraging signs.

As noted he probably wouldn't be able to take a contested pack mark but as a roaming forward he could be very handy. Noone can question his effort or endeavour so he will constantly provide an option around the half forward line and leading even further up the ground.

If he can build up some consistency using Sunday's game as a base effort then I can see him cementing his spot which would be a fantastic effort by him. The next thing he needs to work on is using his intimidating frame to his, and our advantage. If he can start crashing some packs and provide a genuine contest in pack situations then we will be an even better team for it.

I wasn't such a fan of his inclusion but if he keeps performing as he did against the Bulldogs I have no issues with him in the senior side.

was a little dissappointed with his goal celebration was expecting a few more air punches.

Yes I noticed he was quite different in this respect; however I don't think it's because he's 'down' or anything, but rather he is more focussed and in control.

But I would still love to see some excitable goal celebrations, if only to further pump the other guys up :D

Spot on.
