as he zeros in on game 300 perhaps we can take time to reflect on those career highlights that we will remember him for.

for mine its a)the 99 brownlow
b)the cheek for a brownlow winner to name his kid charlie
c)the boots from the '06 season(shocking)

Re: shane crawford memories

Bless, O Lord for these, thy gifts and thou giver of Shane Crawford.
Accept our praise and bless all supporters of Hawthorn.
For the bounty laid before us, Shane Crawford, we remind ourselves what our holy father has provided: Shiny shoes, Brownlow medal, sex appeal in the form of a tiny man and Hank Buldger.
Through Christ, our Lord we pray. Amen.

Re: shane crawford memories

Watching him and Rob Harvey go head to head at Waverley, one of my best football memorys. They ran something like 18ks each, 2 of the games greatest athletes.

Shane Crawford is a legend, his on field performances have been brilliant during one of the toughest era's in Hawthorn History. Also, the off field things that he has done for the club are enormous. I have so much man love for this little bull terrier, and am shattered that I wont see his 300th.

His TV Doco is seriously awesome to, such a good bloke.

Re: shane crawford memories

There have been two of Crawfs games that always stood out for me. The first was in the late 90's out at Waverley versus Essendon. He lined up on Hird and at first I thought WTF? How wrong was I as the little champ towelled him and was the difference as we beat the scum. The second was his 200th game at the Dome versus the Cats. He played the game of his life and we got over the line, it was a great night!

However my best Crawf moment was a couple of years ago when we were shit and he was out with a broken arm. I was sitting in my car (with my brand new Hawks number plates) at a red light on Kings Way when some lunatic came flying up behind me honking his horn. At first I thought "who this ****wit?" then Crawf pulls along side me yells "Go Hawks!" gives me a thumbs up and takes off.:thumbsu:

Re: shane crawford memories

Haven't posted on here for a while, but the great man deserves a post.....

Like Toxic Avenger, I remember Crawf lining up on Hird at Waverley and giving him a bath. I think it would have been 1998 or thereabouts. From memory we lost by 9 points, but it wasn't due to Crawf.

In fact this sums up most of the late 90s - Crawf was about our only shining light during this time. The number of times he would bust a gut racking up 30+ possessions (back when 30+ possies actually meant something) but we would still lose - that's what I remember most.

He also used to get criticised a lot for seemingly running around in circles rather than passing it to a team-mate. But to be honest, there was never a team-mate in a better position so rather than coughing it up he would try and retain possession. (Years ahead of AC.....)

IMHO Crawf brought a new level of professionlism and fitness to the way that he prepared himself for games. He was, quite simply, fitter than anyone else out on the park. His 1999 Brownlow season was sensational.

I also remember him kicking 6 goals against the Swans early on in his career.

Quite simply, Crawf was/is a gun. A 'champion' in the true sense of the word in an era when the term is used to describe any 1st-round draft pick who passes the 50-game mark.

I, like so many other Hawks supporters, would love to see Crawf go out with a premiership medallion (and possibly the Norm Smith) hanging around his neck. He deserves it.

Thanks for the memories to this point of your career Crawf - hopefully there's a couple of chapters still to write.

Re: shane crawford memories

The 99 season was one of the most dominant displays of any player that I can remember. Almost got a very ordinary team to a finals series. The game against Geelong and that tackle on Mansfield was inspirational.
Also had two 40+ possession games that year (against freo and adelaide) when those sort of numbers were unheard of.
I absolutely love Crawford, his dedication to the cause over so many seasons, has been exceptional, and will duly be remembered as a Hawthorn great.

Well done crawf!

Re: shane crawford memories

Playing on the ball for the udner 19s down at Glenferrie one day. Ran the legs off everyone else, but boy he butchered the ball. Thought to myself. This kid won't make it. Scott Crow played that day too as a centre man and had a Diesel Williams game. IO thought he'd ba a star.

Oh well, back to the day job.

200th at the dome?:O thats it, im after the HUN now! last year there was an article on milestones, and said crawf had never played one in melbourne, and never had a win in a milestone!:O

Re: shane crawford memories

*crawf's first half against adelaide last year in the elimination final, single handedly kept us in the game.

*shane crawford lining up on chris judd in 2005 at aurora stadium. kept the star judd to 17 posessions while accumulating 28 of his own. an outstanding effort in an ordinary team, especially considering not only judd's dominance at that time but also west coast's.

the man is hawthorn in every sense. he was the shining light and face of our club during its most mediocre period for 40 years.

words can't explain how much i shall miss seeing his unique running style out on the ground.

Re: shane crawford memories

as for mine, I will never forget the goal he kicked at waverly in 97. Picked up the ball in the back pocket, kicked long to a contest, ran to the contest, grabbed the ball, a few bounces and nailed the goal from 30.

then there is the massive leap he took running at Lade vs Port in tassie. Subsequently got reported (got thrown out on appeal). he would have reached 2.5 metres in height at least

Re: shane crawford memories

My one consistent memory of Shane will be his incredibly consistent and unwavering contribution as our one shining light during the club's dark days which came both before and after our mini rise in 2001.

His career was nicely sandwiched in between our glory day before the early 90's and our probable glory days to come shortly.

It would have been nice for him to have started his career with us about 4 years ago, but if it wasn't for him, we would have been so hopeless, we would probably have merged with the Demons.

So, if nothing else, he can at least be remembered as the player who kept us competitive enough on the field to resist a merger. Even if he doesn't win a premiership medal, that's a great achievement.

Re: shane crawford memories

His Brownlow year was one of the best seasons of footy by any player ever.
Culminating in the tackle on Michael Mansfield in the dying minutes of the last game of season to save the game.
Had other results gone our way that tackle would have got us into the finals.

Re: shane crawford memories

1. 2001 Elimination Final vs Sydney
That goal.

2. 2002 vs Geelong
That game.

A champion of the football club and a champion of the AFL.

Re: shane crawford memories

His brownlow victory has been the most triumphant memory of his career as well as all those awesome games he played, his leadership and off - field dramas. Looking forward to see little Charlie at Hawthorn!

Re: shane crawford memories

My major memory of Crawf would be at the end of 1998, he was a very good player who had yet to discover exactly how good he could be. He accepted the captaincy in 1999 and it was the season which transformed him from a kid with potential into a champion.

If has always annoyed me over the years that a lot of people haven't rated him along side players such as Buckley, Hird, Voss, etc. Crawf has been a great player who missed our Team of the Century simply because he was born 10 years too late.

What better motivation does the Hawks need than to win a flag for the Crawf?

Re: shane crawford memories

I remember that....Great tackle.
I remember Huddo doing one of his early games for seven in that game and saying "who else but shane crawford"

I remember a patch of 4 or 5 games late in the 99 season were he was BOG in every game, it was phenomenal

a goal he kicked against Collingwood a couple years ago in a close game that we won were he ran from the back flank to half forward bombed it into the forward line and Simon Cox that Hawk legend nailed the sausage roll commentators on 3aw couldnt believe that late in the game he could run that far and that quickly...

he is seriously just awesome !!!!!!!!!
