Sheffield Shield Final Round

I just think that it's funny - just as our Test team begins to parody the Poms at their worst through the 90's, our Sheffield Shield competition reaches the depths of looking like a county cricket competition - contrived declarations on the last day, rain washing out days of play, declarations at 0/0 being proposed, retired test players (Hussey, Hodge, Ponting) and international imports (Botha) getting a foothold, T20 cricket (Big Bash) getting in the way of first class cricket for over a month....

Oh, and GO THE REDBACKS - I'm still barracking for you even though you'll probably find a way to lose unexpectedly....

Hodge hasnt been in the shield side for 2 years and was hardly a test regular.

Regardless, Players such as Hussey, Punter, Haddin and Rogers are good to set the standard in a scenario with so many younger players around of the sort of work ethic that should be shown.

Rolled for 182, O'Keefe got Botha in the end. 4/58 for Sandhu, 2/11 (13, incl 9 maidens) for Hazlewood, 2/56 Copeland one each for Tremain and O'Keefe.

Now for our flimsy batting lineup to kill our chances

But this is just the sort of thing we were looking down on the Poms for so long - old hands just hanging around because the next gen of cricketers coming through weren't good enough to get their spot.
Maybe now because we are looking from the outside in, that it's seems more acceptable than it is.

Here's how bad it is getting - name the 7 players averaging more than 50 in domestic first class this year. Here, I'll help. Ponting, Haddin, Wade, Hughes, Henriques, McDonald and Krezja!
And even worse, there's only 6 more averaging more than 40. - Doolan, Wells, M Hussey, Rogers, Ferguson and Agar!

Out of 6 teams, there are at least 36 batsmen each round of matches, and only 11 of them average over 40. (not counting Krezja and Agar).

Enough of my whinging, Redbacks all out for 182... Time for Sayers and Mennie to fire!

We've had so-called contrived declarations in the shield for years and years.

I'd also like to inform you that rain isn't a recent phenomenon either.

Retired players going back to the shield is a bonus, not a drawback. And we've had imports in the shield on and off for years as well - Botham, Richards (Barry and Viv), Sobers, Wes Hall, Hadlee, Holding, Imran Khan, Kanhai, Simmons, Hampshire, Davison and so on.

The only thing I agree with you about is the 20/20 aspect.

Since when have they had commentary on the live streams? Pretty good.

few games, south aussie did it for a home game as did the vics .. they just had silks in the box how great is that!!! ..
wonder if watson will think about playing if his side makes it,would be funny

great to see ricky smashing around ahmed to see how he handles it

Whilst my tongue was a little in my cheek with my comment, doesn't it give a new perspective when the test side is struggling though...

Sandhu's career certainly off to a flyer so far.

one for all you stat heads out there.

how may times in recent history has a whole day been lost at the WACA? cant think of too many in recent years

Tassie looking to declare soon already? Faulkner in ahead of Paine and starts swinging ball one.

26 off 11 so far.

Predicted rain over the next few days, probably want to put the Vics in before lunch tomorrow.

Really good to see Wells make some runs over the last few matches, has had a pretty good season in all forms.
