My girlfriend and I are having a discussion about getting a dog, I believe if we got a dog, it should sleep inside, but she believes that the dog should sleep outside (however, it can be inside when we're home, but if we go out, it has to go outside as well), I believe that the dog should be inside all the time, and only go outside, when it wants to use the toilet or play.

I've put a poll up, it's simple, Inside or Outside?

I have an old Labrador which spends most of the day inside, mainly because its eyesight and hearing are deteriorating.

Before that, it spent most of the day outside but it slept inside.

Depends on the dog. We tried outside and in the laundry with ours but it was whining so loud we couldn't get to sleep and gave up and now sleeps at the foot of my parents bed. If you let them inside when they are only a few months old theres a good chance they will pee inside as well (ours was doing that until he was about 8 monthsish but only a couple of times).

What breed of dog are you looking at getting?

We've got a wire-haired jack russel called Lilli who starts the night of on the end of our bed, then when we're both asleep she climbs between us and pushes outwards. I often wake up in the morning shivering because she's slowly ( so i dont wake up ) pushed me away from under the blankets so she can lay where i've warmed the bed up.

This dog is a two year old jack russel, not exactly the biggest dog in the world ( she weighs about 3 kilos or something - pretty tiny ) and she still manages to push me away from the blankets.

Point of the story is, some dogs are sneaky little bastards, if you can live with that then they're great to have in the bedroom.

We're not sure what we're looking at getting yet, but it'll probably end up being a big dog, but even though, I still want it inside, thanks for the feedback guys, much appreciated.

Currently, (still living with my family, but moving out with my gf very soon) my family and I have a Fox Terrier x Chihuahua (75% Fox, 25% Chihuahua), it sleeps on the end of my bed, it goes outside when it's a nice day and it sits in the sun, other than that, it goes out to use the toilet when it needs to, and barks when he wants to come back inside, other than that, I walk him 4 times a week, he gets plenty of exercise when he's outside, he'll chase birds, or run along the fence and talk to the dog next door

If its a big dog then it will try and wake you up in the middle of the night when it needs to pee/crap. We have a Large Munsterlander (which you probably have never heard of before) which is basically a pony but spends most of his time inside, malts quite a bit but apart from that and the waking up in the middle of the night its fine.

Nice dog you have there! :thumbsu:

My dog that currently sleeps on the end of my bed wakes me up in the middle of the night when he needs to go outside, but I don't mind, he is generally pretty good, doesn't wake me up a lot as he goes outside before I go to bed.

He doesn't malt a lot, which is quite good, and he is fine inside.

My little dog sleeps on my bed, don't notice at all that there is a dog sleeping there with me, also my dog will sleep through the night no problems what so ever, unless I don't take her outside for a pee just before I go to bed, but she can sleep for a good time which is good for me too considering I am a heavy sleeper anyway.

I think though that if you do go out then the dog should be out, to do it's business and whatever, if you can get dogs used to being outside when you are gone quickly then you will find it will be a lot less stressed than it can get.

Neither - my rottie slept in the garage on mats. That way he wasn't out in the weather, but wasn't messing up the house.

Dogs are too large for inside houses. If you say the breed is small enough to be in the house then you've just got a second rate cat instead of the real deal.

Correct. Dogs are outside animals. Hate those 'toy' dogs. While I don't mind Jack Russels, why not just get a cat?

Need big dogs like Rotty's.

Umm.. yeah. That's why you house train them.

I have two Jack Russells. They both sleep on my bed.

I have a Labrador and it sleeps in the laundry. I got a dog door so it can go in and out when it wants to but I close it during the day. It lets me know when it is time to come inside. Woof Woof.
