How big was the field at Waverly?

Was not just the playing field big. Also a lot of room between the boundary line and fence. Stark contrast with SCG where fence so close players sometimes end up over it and in crowd or some injury like Roughy getting at Homebush a year or two back.

As someone going there you felt a lot further from the players but good view from most points of ground. Just not close. I enjoyed being able to pick and choose far more readily where to view game from than we restricted to now.

Having another big capacity crowd ground in Melbourne suburbs and not in inner city was a real blessing we have lost.

This would of never happened if people had the balls to pay the extra dosh so every club has a home stadium.
no club has the money to build their own stadium! the NRL clubs only have their home grounds still due to pretty much being funded buy state and federal governments!
even then their crowds are crap and the stadiums are often whinged about to being out dated & run down & cry out for government funding

This.
I would have been happy to see another stadium built, lets say around Cranbourne or somewhere close to a train station to replace Waverley Park but to actually kill it off and build another one in the city instead was disgusting. Especially when it cuts the size of second ground in Melbourne down to only around 50,000 capacity. Many people from the Gippsland region, Mornington Peninsula and outer south eastern suburbs would have gone but now probably do not bother going to footy with needing to travel all the way into Docklands and forced to cue and then travel all the way home again. Love to know the figures of people lost to going to the footy because of this that were happy to goto Waverley as was way more central location for them.
So Cranbourne is a better location and more accessible to fans than the Docklands? You have got to be kidding me

Get some comprehension skills please.
It is a better location to the many many thousands of football fans that been lost with the option of a ground more central to Melbourne vast southern eastern population that lives a long way from Docklands.
We already have the MCG cater for inner city and other areas.
Get some context to the conversation next time.

Maybe not for western suburbs people like us, but for everyone in the east (which on a map looks like 70% of the city). Even then it's a lot more convenient in my view to hop in the car and drive to Cranbourne than having to navigate the CBD. Not to mention we already have another CBD venue in the MCG.

Of course if we had a stadium in Laverton, as was KG Luke's original 1960s plan, it would be just great ;)

I reckon it's easier to get to the city for most people rather than Cranbourne, all train lines lead into the city as where getting to Cranbourne would create a massive traffic log jam even for people in the South East.

This, public transport to any stadium outside the city would be an almost insurmountable problem. the AFL and the state government don't want you driving to grounds anymore.

Why isn't it? Docklands is difficult to get to from all parts of Melbourne

People say Waverley used to be cold, but Docklands...

It's the coldest place in Melbourne. The only time I've actually felt the chill through my body was at Docklands.

What? Every train line in Melbourne runs to Docklands. One of the easiest places to get to in this town.

But most people live closer to the CBD than they do to Cranbourne. Add the fact that the largest growth areas now are the Western and Northern outer suburbs. The train system is set up to move people in and out of inner Melbourne.

The simple fact is Football stadiums need to be convenient for the majority not just people in a select region. I'm guessing people in and around Cranbourne wouldn't be to fond of Etihad being replaced with a stadium in Sunbury would they?

What pert of Waverley taken away from south eastern suburbs and replaced with ANOTHER inner city stadium do you not get ?

What part of Waverly was inconvenient for the majority of people to get to do you not understand? Centralised stadiums are more convenient and have the infrastructure in place that gets used outside sporting events.

Exactly. That is the only thing you get. You clearly do not get how many football fans no longer go because a ground like Waverley no longer exists. What was a central located stadium for many many Melbourne people in greater south east region and Gippsland and Mornington Peninsula got removed as an option and instead a stadium added to inner city that already had the MCG and Princes Park at the time. You are sounding like you are not aware of the many many thousands of football fans that no longer go because they no longer had a central located ground for them.

i can guarantee there is 0 chance i would brave the trek down the monash on a friday night.
i go to pretty much every Friday night game in melbourne. But no way in hell i sit in that traffic.

i don't think Waverley ever hosted a Friday night game except in the pre-season
still would have been great to have for Hawks/Saints supporters with games on Saturday/Sunday arvos

a (big) suburban ground to complement the two city grounds

..and we are one such family. By family, I mean in-laws as well. We went to every Saints game, also whenever the Bears (when they existed) played there and whenever my parents came down from the country, we'd take them to Geelong games..

We practically lived at Waverley, we loved it.

Get out your maps peeps and just have a look at how big an area the sth eastern suburbs are. There's a lot more than just Cranbourne...

...and that is why they built the ground where they did....because of the growth predicted for the sth eastern area of melbourne. There was going to be a train line right up the middle of Wellington Rd/North Rd......have a look at the train lines and freeways/main roads that would've led straight into that train line, and up to the ground...

The AFL stuffed up badly when they closed down Waverley.......and cold is cold, my god, I've frozen to the bones at the MCG many times.

I remember travelling to Waverly by myself when I was 12. Take 2 trains, and a shuttlebus.

Would have to leave the house at 12 to make it just in time for the bounch and get home at 8.

Irony is, now that I'm an adult, I actually only live 10 mins away.

I lived near Waverley and used to go often as a kid. It was much more convenient to jump on a train and head to the G as Waverley involved getting stuck in the carpark frequently and freezing to death.

Also the ground was massive, wasnt the best viewing from the low stands. I think if people had the Waverley experience now they would be ringing up sen to whinge about it.
