Should the AFL let Essendon fold?

I'm also a traditionalist but a realist when it comes to the prospect of 10 Victorian clubs surviving in a truly national competition. 18 teams is too many in a country of this size, the talent is spread far too thin when spuds like Nick Kommer are getting a regular game. Nor can the AFL realistically add another WA team, or a Canberra/NT/Tassie team until at least one Victorian club relocates/merges/folds.

Yes the Victorian clubs have fans in every state because most have been around for about a hundred years that's true. Still the Melbourne market is overly saturated while other states are underdeveloped. Eventually the AFL will correct that, its just a question of time. It will be a sad day when the next Victorian clubs folds or relocates but if that club happens to be Essendon* it'll soften the blow nicely.

Purely from fan point of view I don't understand why the Hawks seem to be the ones most wanting the Bombers to die. You almost lost your club. Would you wish that feeling on another fan?

Also they are your biggest tradional rival. Not sure why you would want that rivalry to end. I doubt many Collingwood fans really want Calton to fold or have someone else other than the Bombers to play on Anzac Day.

Cards are stacked against the Bombers but I won't be cheering if they do fold.

They're Essendon* supporters, no I don't care greatly about their feelings. Besides they can follow Norf or the Bombres' VFL team. (sorry Norf)

We'll still have Geelong, one rival is enough. I'll miss beating the Scum but it wouldn't be the end of the world. We're an adaptable species and I'd adapt to an AFL without Essendon* pretty quickly.

Most of all I don't believe 10 Victorian clubs is sustainable. The strong are essentially propping up the weak right now, and that won't go on forever. Doggies, Norf, Melbourne, St.Kilda are all financially shaky. Why do you think Hawthorn's worked so hard to turn ourselves into a financial powerhouse? So we can afford to pump millions into our footy department sure, but also as a hedge for when the crunch comes - and it WILL come, perhaps when the league grows a set of testicles and bans pokie revenue. 50 years from now some of these struggling Victorian clubs will no long exist, I'd bet my life on it.

So why not vaporize Essendon*? They're a disgusting organization of arrogant cheats & liars, their supporters are a pack of deluded feral ingrates and the league would be cleaner without them. With every Victorian club that dies Hawthorn becomes a tiny little bit safer, which is ultimately all I care about. Does my callousness shock you?

Well the league has already pretty much survived like this in one form or another forever and a day.
Taking into account the increase in marketing, revenue, TV deals, exposure, expansion and supporters currently making the league the biggest it's ever been why should this suddenly become too hard to afford now..?
