Getting nervous about not using our comp pick!

Looking at Emma Quayles mock draft and also Jay Clarke from the HS and it looks like they have Harper being a massive chance to be around at 26 our compo pick I believe.

If this kid is available at the point where we would have had the compo pick if executed I will be absolutely filthy. I would still be happy if we took him at 6 let alone being available at 26.

Really hoping they got this right and pick 19-22 in the 2012 draft are absolute freakshows because Kieren Harper could wind up being a top 5 player from this draft pool.

It'll be the same in every draft amcre. Theres a fair bit of luck involved. I wouldn't stress too much.

Re: Getting nervous about not using our comp pick!

I have seen him play live a few times. I understand his highlights package looked good but he was a gun last year as well.

If North get him I will be super jealous that is all.

Re: Getting nervous about not using our comp pick!

You may be right about Harper slipping according to those two phantom drafts but the club has done the right thing banking the pick. We are entering the second year of a rebuild and we have to be patient. Those compo picks are gold whether you hang onto them or trade with them.

I think the coaching staff are going to be very busy this year accessing our list and competition for spots is going to be out of control.

The safe bet would be to save that pick for 2012. There will be no risk in missing out on a Harper type then.

Re: Getting nervous about not using our comp pick!

If Harper is not available at the position our compo pick is then I will be relieved. It is just the fact that I rate him as a top 10 prospect who was unlucky this year with injuries and I think that he would be better than player x taken at pick 20-22 in 2012. Other than that I think they have done the right thing...

I know where you are coming from. Its not a bad pool of players. Maybe the compo pick used this year may bring a better player than in 2012, but i don't think it could by that much. I think we'll have a better assessment of our list then, so we'd be better able to target particular type of players.

Re: Getting nervous about not using our comp pick!

Yeah I agree with that point of view...we will be able to identify needs and draft a tall or small or whatever is glaring or use it to trade for a big name along with our first pick.

It is really THE HARPER FACTOR that is making me nervous...really don't want North to get him because I don't want them to get too many bargains considering that they will be a main rival in a few years. Would be happy if he went to Brisbane and hated it then came home to the club he supports...THE TIGS!

ill put it in perspective for you, the 2012 draft is meant to be stronger, the 2012 draft will be uncompromised, we will be able to get a player of the quality of those that were selected around 14/15/16 in this years draft (when you factor in the 17 year olds taken by gold coast) at our pick in the 2012 draft which will be pick 18-23.

There are still 6 odd compensation picks banked and if there is another 6 from GWS then you could end up with a pick over 20 anyway and you have to make that call before the first round if you are going to use the compensation pick that year so you wont get to have a good look at what the talent is going to be like as we had this year.

I think the consensus was the top 30 would be pretty good and it seemed to pan out that way in terms of the calibre of players recruited. It was just a bit light-on for KPPs.

nope. that pick will be extremely useful when we finally climb up the ladder and we can't rely on finishing in the bottom 4 to get the top rated kids

What he said. Using it later helps sustain long term development. Would rather have the "bonus" of having an extra pick when our list doesnt need so much turnover and trying to get high picks are rare as hens teeth. There was no need to rush and use that pick.

If we could have got Batchelor later there would have been little point using the compo.

Who would they have used it on if we had it? I am not sure they would have used it on Harper if they had the chance.

In retrospect, , with our left field selections, could we have traded our draft picks backward by 7 each and picked up pick 26 for doing so in a trade???

A question we will never know

Wrapt we kept the pick. It's value may be worth more in an uncompromised draft, and depending on what we require, we may be able to onsell it to secure a wanted player later on. All good.
