Opinion Sidebottom is Overrated

I tend to agree. Ball's days as the chief inside mid are numbered because he is exposed on the spread.

I do however believe that he is capable of at least matching Jarryd Blair's output up forward. If given the choice between Blair and Ball I'm taking Ball because in a pinch his work through the middle is going to provide us more than Blair and he is smarter with his running patterns.

I think we will need Ball this week against the Weagles. We will need him at the coal face to nullify Nic Natagoals dominance.

I have never been one of the ones that has called him overrated or said he should be dropped. However I do have one bit of criticism towards Steele and really its not criticism but observation.
When Steele first started playing I thought 'this kid is going to be a gun' for such a young kid he really did show a lot. My sort of criticism is that I thought he would improve with time and be one of the best in the comp. But he hasn't.
He IS a very good footballer. He hasn't achieved what I thought he would or shown the improvement I thought he would.
So I guess my diisappointment is more about my expectations not about his ability.

I don't agree with the notion that Sidebottom hasn't improved. It's just untrue and he is markedly improved from when he first started.

Steele is consistently hitting 25-30 touches and kicking goals these days, he was certainly not doing that when he was first drafted or even 2010-2011. In 2010 Steele averaged 19 disposals, in 2014 it is 26.

Yes he showed flashy glimpses when he was 18-19 and he still does that these days, except he's getting his 25 to go along with it.

He was never going to be a Gary Ablett type. In any case, we're not talking about a guy who is 29 and has never improved. Steele is 23 years old.......

I'd like to start a new topic and call it SIDEBOTTOM IS UNDERRATED. I really don't understand the hate.. his probably the hardest running two way midfielder in the comp. he has been top #5 disposal efficiency for both feet since 2010. he is good for almost one goal a game. and for those who say he gets easy goals over the top. the ONLY reason he gets the easy touches and goals over the top is because he has run his opponent of his feet who is lagging back 50 metres behind..

He is inconsistent at being elite, I reckon about 67 percent elite and 33 percent just good!

While he doesn't exactly represent the toughness and power of a midfielder, his ability to find the ball in the forward and get those crumming goals is very akin to a Didak type of player. Additionally hes been going for the ball a lot more across the ground, racking up the possessions and providing the pace we need to get the ball down the boundary like a true winger.

I think the main problem that he's not elite is that he looks like he should be in a boy band.....and I really dont know how he's going to fix that. Maybe we should trade him for someone like Jake King.

In general terms, Sidey is rated right about where he is at. In the eyes of Collingwood fans, maybe a little overrated...but which Pies player isn't? lol.

Sidearse is one of our top 5 players. His kicking might be frustrating at times but at least he runs both ways. A gun player who gets severely criticised on this board.

I had flirted with the idea of trading Steele this year - but clearly i underrated his importance as we can see from the Didaka voting. Those three weeks off highlighted how important he is as a gut running linkman!
He has really shown us consistency and a been key contributor since his return!

I think if we look at Steele's numbers over the last three years he has been consistently very good averaging around 25 (26+ this year) touches per game at a disposal efficiency of 70% and given how much he kicks the ball that's pretty damned handy!

He has maintained a steady 8.2 contested possessions and 3.5 tackles per game and he is a known finisher with 40 odd goals in 65 + games!

I believe he is currently our third best player and our 4th/5th most important - at his age he is vital part of our future as a leader imo.

do people just blindly make comments for the sake of making them. he has one of the best kicking efficiency in the comp and has been top #5 since 2010 for kicking efficiency on both feet.
