News Silvagni, Smith and Tabener sign contract extensions

Wait, what? Silvagni? That's surprising. Ross must like and value him after all. Great to see KPPs being locked away. Smith and Taberner are the future.

He has been extremely useful as depth this year. Surprised though that he didn't ask for a trade to a team where he'd be best 22. Either he's a good bloke who loves Freo or he got no bites.

Makes me feel like this:

Silvagni's had a bit of a rollercoaster ride over the past few years, but very happy to have him on board. Definitely showed signs this year of that his back half of 2011 wasn't a fluke.

Great that the young guys are also being locked away, but no Michie is still a bit of a worry.

You really have no clue do you? SNOS has improved markedly this year and come to grips with the RTB game plan, dropped weight and his fitness is at an all-time high. He'd slot right in if we needed him too for Dawson, Johnson or McPharlin. He wouldn't have been offered a contract otherwise.

Perhaps I don't have a clue, but I'll hedge my bets and back myself in, what do you reckon?

If he was anything more than a plan D, he'd get longer than 1 year now, wouldn't he?

Maybe that was the compromise to get him to stay?

Like a 'give us one more year as depth and we'll see what's happening with McPharlin's spot after that, then if you want to leave we'll trade you' sort of thing.

That could be going both ways though. SCOS could well have wanted 1 year so that he's free to find better opportunities for himself in a couple of years if he doesn't get the game time he wants or whatever next year - I wouldn't be surprised if that's the case actually. We may have tried for 2 and he knocked us back. Of course it could be the other way round, SCOS wanted longer but we're not prepared to lock ourselves in on what the club might see as a temporary backup arrangement as you suggest.

If I was forced to place a bet though, I'd say it's the former - obviously you're leaning the other way, and that's fair enough.

EDIT: What Esti said above, beat me to it.

Will be looking at an experienced ready made forward to be alongside Pav as well as try and get one or two through the draft. That's the missing link in the set up at the moment. Midfielders and half flankers should be lesser priority this season (but we all know the drafting team likes to get those every year)

Yeah I am just worried that the good KPF such as McCarthy etc.. will already be picked before Freo's first pick.

Wouldn't mind Dom Sheed as a mid pick if the good KPF are already taken and we don't get our hands on Jessie White.

I reckon one year is alright for both parties.

Like you say, McPharlin could realistically retire at the end of 2015. If Smith or someone else hasn't stepped up, he'll have a spot in a top four side. All good and worthy.

For now, he is our plan B though. Even Crichton couldn't crack a game and Smith only got one. Silvagni is flattering depth and he's next in line after the regular six. So I don't think it's Freo disregarding him and keeping him for the sake of it, it's because we genuinely need him.

for Silvagni to sign on for another i think shows alot of his character and commitment to the club:thumbsu: considering that he's kinda a pinch hitter. I for one am very happy for him and the club to stay on. As others have said he'd be starting 22 elsehwere

That point would still be valid with a 2 or 3 year contract, except Silvagni has added job security (which you all know he'd never refuse), and we have slightly better negotiating power due to no threat of the PSD ;). If we saw him as someone that showed much value to us, or anyone else, he'd be on a longer contract.

There's no shame in just admitting that I'm right lads...

Silvagni would be a walk up start at the Dogs, Giants, Saints and Demons. Why wouldn't he pursue those opportunities? Why wouldn't we?

Based on how our season ends this year, there's a distinct possibility that McPharlin walks away.

Has been better this season than he was last season. One season extension seems fair enough.

Well done to the other two.

McPharlin, Pav and Sandi. Been a tough year for all of them. I'd say they do another 12 months if we don't win it. But every chance they retire on a high if we do.

Wow, I hope the club manages it better than letting all 3 retire at once. If they are all insistent I guess we have no choice, but that would be a poor result.

Id say they will go on for at least another year, get more stability within the group and honour the contracts. McPharlin isn't done yet, he's still got some to give, and Sandi will want to keep going. Pav will continue on to get 300 games, not that he is selfish or anything. He deserves it and should be encouraged to achieve it. He gets to join the greats in doing so.

Would he be?

He would be 4th in line for a game at GWS behind Jaksch, Davis, Gilham, Mohr, Bruce, Corr, Sellar. They've just delisted Cornes, O'Hailpin. Tell me why they would want a list clogger, when they've got stud 1st round picks which have served 1/2 year apprenticeships, and seasoned players capable of holding down the fort for another 6-12 months?

Melbourne have Frawley, Dunn, McDonald, Seller, Pederson or even bloody Watts who is a better player than Silvagni. They have got KPP's coming out of their ****ing ears, they have no interest whatsoever ever in recruiting undersized KPP's with poor disposal, that lack pace.

Want me to keep going?

If Silvagni had serious interest from rival clubs, he would sign with them. If Silvagni had serious interest from rial clubs, and we felt he was important, we would sign him for longer than 1 season. If Silvagni was highly regarded by the club, we would have played him ahead of Tanner Smith, instead of putthing him up against some bloke called Lance Franklin in his debut match.

But yeah, you keep telling yourself he's the heir apparant for when McPharlin packs it in in another 2ish years. Ffffffuuuuu-

To be fair besides Frawley all the players for Melbourne you listed are basically spuds.

Jaksc and Corr for GWS are promising but are still young and raw.

Saints and Bulldogs have very few decent KPP's and Dale Morris is 31.

KPP do attract interest. Luke Delaney from the Roos is, and he has only played five senior games this year.

But I spose it doesn't matter anyway.

Please, tell me how Silvagni will dominate while playing for Melbourne. He gets schooled playing for us, and we're the best defensive side in the competition.

Like I said, they've got older bodies to hold the fort until they develop ie Davis and Mohr. Forgot Plowman, heh.

No doubt KPP attract interest, but it's the young talented ones, or the proven quality ones. Clubs don't go trading for what they can pick up for free in the PSD, after another club delists them.

If you or Malpaso are confident that Silvagni will be around in 2-3 years time, I'm more than willing to place a wager on it.
