Hope this happens. I’ve been wanting to get into the NBL but didn’t wanna pick a team if the GC were to get one
I feel the same way. It'd be great to have another professional sports team from the Gold Coast to support over the summer months. As a city, we're becoming a lot more prominent in the basketball world with local Jack McVeigh making it into the NBA this season and Gold Coast schools TSS + Hillcrest winning the male and female national schools championship last year. Lots of positive signs for the future and if we can secure this brand new arena in Southport then sky is the limit for what we can achieve as a city.

Mini GF thoughts on the Broncos trying to force their players to move away from the beautiful city? “I never liked the idea of Broncos players living on the Gold Coast” is the exact quote used by a Broncos staffer. I don't buy this theory that living on the Gold Coast is affecting the Broncos' team culture/performance so much that it's having a negative impact on field. Darren Lockyer and Corey Parker lived on the GC for many years while the Broncos were successful. The same can be said about several prominent Lions players like Jonathan Brown who lived on the GC while they were successful. I think the Broncos are just looking for a scape goat to explain why they went from Grand Finalists last year to 12th this year and it's easy to blame the Gold Coast. Their issues are deeper than that.

Hey
Thanks for caring about my opinion.
Here is a copy and paste of what I said on the Titans Forum yesterday

“Gee I hope the Drongoes follow through with making their players live in the River Sewer City.
Can’t stand seeing the Drongoes imposters living in our community. Makes me sick.

Better still though if they follow through with it I think our ability to recruit players will skyrocket.”

It's a really weird thought process/policy. Imagine the Brisbane Lions telling Joe Daniher that he needed to move from Byron Bay to Brisbane because it was hurting 'team culture'. They would have never been able to recruit him if they tried to pull something like that and he may have considered joining the Suns instead, like you alluded to.

Maguire is not off to the best start at Red Hill. Maybe it opens the door for Reece Walsh to head home to the Titans?

I can’t see us chasing Reece Walsh. Sometime this year Keano Kini will be signed to a big money long term deal to be the GC Fullback.

It's looking promising. High profile Gold Coasters are throwing their support behind the Gold Coast Arena proposal and it appears that council are willing to fund it, so we won't have to rely on money from the state or federal governments. We're getting closer to re-entry into the NBL and finally having a suitable venue for most musical acts.

Revealed: what Gold Coasters think of boutique stadium

High-profile Gold Coasters like the site and plan for a proposed boutique indoor stadium in Southport - regardless of what it looks like.

New plans, released in the first week of November and revealed by the Bulletin on Friday, showed Southport’s Carey Park as home to the council’s proposed “world class indoor sports and entertainment venue”.

Fresh plans project the venue to deliver $1.5bn in economic output in its first decade, putting an extra $700m into the economy.

Why wouldn’t they just renovate the Gold Coast exhibition centre?

I think they're restricted by the water to the west and the GC Highway to the east. I also think they're using this project as a trigger for revitalisation in Southport. Broadbeach doesn't really need revitalisation, but Southport definitely does.

Interesting clip here from former Titans player Toby Sexton when he's asked about the differences between the Gold Coast and Sydney. He says the Gold Coast has "a lot of distractions" like AFL that aren't really present in Sydney. I reckon this is a pretty good indication of the local growth of Aussie rules on the Gold Coast because I highly doubt a professional rugby league player would have answered the question that way a decade ago.

In the past, the Gold Coast was viewed as rugby league heartland within the rugby league community, but Sexton actually identifies Sydney as a RL heartland area, implying the Gold Coast isn't. Sexton is a 23 year old PBC junior and would've gone to school with some of our former/current players like Crossley, Dawson, Grahamx2, Walter at PBC High, so he'd have a pretty good understanding of what's going on here. Encouraging stuff.

Looks like the the Titans have been forced to relocate to Sydney this week for training purposes as their Parkwood facilities are under water. Same situation for the Lions with their facilities damaged in Ipswich. As for us? Our world class drainage system in Carrara has once again stood up in the face of adversity and our boys will be able to train on the ground later today. You really do gain an appreciation for our training facilities in situations like these because the Titans and Lions are certainly going to have less than ideal preparations for their first games of the season, meanwhile we go about business the way that we normally would in the lead up to a Perth game.

Only time will tell in terms of whether this ends up affecting the Titans on field performance, but I did see their CEO on the news talking about their need to leave Parkwood in favour of better training facilities. Securing new training facilities is easier said than done, as we know all too well.

Titans play their first game of the season against the Bulldogs this arvo while we're playing West Coast in Perth. Really hot conditions down in Sydney today so anything could happen.

I hear you. Not much to say about that performance today. Let's see if they can redeem themselves next week against the Knights at Robina.
I thought they were as usual, dumb, couldn’t play a full 80mins, full of flair and ripped off by the NswRL referees.

Therefore pretty much the same as last year.

That means on their day they can beat anyone and will frustrate the bejesus out of us too.

Yep I’ll be there next Saturday.
Bring it.

Important game coming up for the Titans in an hour from now. They play the Roosters away next week (who beat the Panthers a fortnight ago) so the Titans really need to win today. Certainly don't want to start the season 0-3.

Did Cody Simpson play?
I assume they'll be rolling out the Cody Simpson song at their first home game of the season in Robina today. Wouldn't be surprised if Cody is actually there and performing it live pre-game/half time.

I’ll be there. I’m a bit punch drunk now from supporting GC teams since 1988 in literally everything.
I just get sick in the tummy and expect misery.

I definitely don’t fit in with the new Suns “fearless” campaign.

It's hard to feel "fearless" when we've seen so much agony in this city. I think anyone that's been associated with Gold Coast sports at the professional level has been burnt at some point in the past, and most likely on more than one occasion. So I don't blame you for feeling that way. It's weird to think that there's probably only been one season in both the Suns and Titans combined years that I felt like the Gold Coast team might be able to do something special. That was in 2010 when the Titans made it all the way to a home prelim and had stars like Prince, Presto, Rogers, Bailey, Friend, Mini, Bird etc. They were fun times.

I have a few friends who support the Brisbane Lions and I remember how hesitant they were to feel confident going into games for virtually the entire 2019 season when they made the jump from 15th to 2nd. That doubt hung around for a while and it wasn't until finals were secured that it started to change. I think we're going to see that at the Suns this year, but there are two aspects that are filling me with confidence for the future. The first is Damien Hardwick - literally one of the best AFL coaches of all time - and the second is the emergence of our academy as a genuine breeding ground for high level talent.

I kind of view our academy situation like this is what would happen if the Titans were given exclusive access to all the best talent that PBC and Keebra produced every year. Imagine how good the Titans would be if Gold Coast products like Reece Walsh and Payne Haas were zoned to the Titans. Game changer.

Anyway. Back on topic. Should be interesting to see how the Titans respond against Newcastle today. Particularly given it's Tino's first game at Robina in over a year.
