When we bought our house, we had two smoke alarms that are/were connected to some kind kind of wiring in the roof - I assume the electrical wiring... both smoke alarms have konked it recently, but the cords remain hanging out from the roof waiting for a replacment to be attached or re-fitted.

We've had a look around and we think these kind of smoke alarms are past their use-by date, as they're very hard to find - and similar ones that are out there, are like $50 each.

So my question is - can we simply shove the wiring back up into the roof, buy two new standard smoke alarms and place them over the small hole in the roof???

Any advice would be appreciated. :thumbsu:

Get at least one basic battery power smoke alarm whilst your wondering, crap happens when you least expect it or when you take down your guard. I should know I have worked in insurance and volunteer rescue.

To everyone else who hasn't got one:- Just like drink driving/speeding it is non negotiable. Tell otherwise to someone who has lost a loved one!

Cheers

My dads a fireman so we've got heaps. Our last count revealed 9 in out average sized house.

He sees the effects of not having a smoke alarm. Most people in WA have them now i think though and it shows. There hasnt been a fatality in WA in a house fire this year.

Ours is hard wired with a rechargeable battery backup and can be monitored as well. And boy is it loud.

Tell me about it!! I've moved into a new place yesterday with this sort of setup. Thing is when I viewed the house last weekend, all was fine. Came back Monday night, and one of them was beeping intermitantly, and same when we moved in yesterday. Now they are wired to the mains as well as a battery, and they are also hooked up to the alarm system. We geared up for a long night of beeps thinking it was the backup battery needing replacing and couldn't get one till this morning. A power surge in the area saw a 30sec blackout last night - and the bloody thing stopped beeping after that! Go figure?!?

I bought new batteries today anyway. We'll just replace them all at the same time - just in case.

Fire alarms are only needed if you're a complete **** who sets fire to things or leaves the stove on.

I now know that everyone in this thread is a ****.
