Smoking Outside the Ground - Time to be banned

A normal person to me wouldn't have been sucked in by advertising and being 'cool' causing health concerns, illness and potential death.
That may or may not be the reason some of us took up smoking but advertising has been banned for 20 years and I don't know if anyone over the age of 20 that smokes 'just to be cool'.

An amazingly ignorant post.

You're walking around a car park with hundreds of vehicles moving around spewing out carbon monoxide. Time to ban cars outside the grounds.

I no longer smoke but seriously stop being such a baby. You're outside in the world, not everything is going to cater to you.
This.
Plus what are people addicted to cigarettes supposed to do? Some people can't go without for 2-3 hours are they supposed to catch the train out to the Dandenongs at half time to get away from people so preciously concerned with their health.
Not a smoker but I know that cigarettes are highly addictive and are also used at much higher rates by people with lower socio-economic backgrounds and also people with mental health problems smoke cigarettes at a much higher rate at the general public. This law would discriminate against people who the game is really for.

Smokers should be encouraged to get as many smokes in per day as possible.

Its evolution, baby.

Since the average life expectancy of smokers is only 10 years shorter than that of non-smokers it's not really doing much to change the gene pool.

Got no problem with people smoking outside but people shouldn't be allowed to smoke directly outside of the gates. My son loves going for a kick at the breaks and we have to navigate through a cloud of stinking smoke each time he wants to play . Move the smokers so people can use the gates without the smoke and the problem is solved.

BTW the false equivalency being spouted in this thread is pretty funny. Drinking a Coke or eating a Big Mac doesn't directly affect other people. Smoking does. That's why it was banned from restaurants, pubs, etc.

I agree with this. Designated areas are something I'm surprised the MCG hasn't done yet. But banning it outright is ridiculous.

I blow my smoke in the face of people like you for shit, and giggles.

I go to incubators in hospitals and find the kids of anti-smokers and blow smoke all over them.

Its one thing to be anti smoking, because nicotine is an awful drug and cigarettes are bad.

But to be anti smoker is to declare yourself as a classist sociopath.

A "normal" person wouldn't be sucked in by Macca's and Coke ad's either....Yet, the AFL has Macca's, Coke and Mars as sponsors.....
Smoking has been over taken by overweight/obesity as the leading cause of death and disability in Australia.
As a GP I can tell you now that I see many many more people with weight issues than smokers. The problem is that targeting smokers has always been socially acceptable...Targeting fat people isn't. Interesting dichotomy.

Interesting concept would be to investigate a tax on junk foods based off it's caloric density.

The issue is as soon as conversations start about imposing will on the majority the libertarians come out swinging. Thing is, if people expect tax payers funded medical care then there is a legitimate question about individual responsibility for lifestyle choices.

Yep smokers save the country a tonne of money later in life, and raise a lot of taxes while alive.

If anything they should be given first class status. Chauffeur driven to hospital appointments, special seating for smokers in movie theaters etc.

They are truly the best Australians.

I had to carry my 8 week old girl through a smoke haze that went for miles outside AO last night. Not good enough and she shouldn't have to breathe in that crap.

All smoking in public needs to be in little segregated rooms like airports have. Total ban otherwise.

I wouldnt worry about it. There is evidence that constant exposure to second hand smoke can be dangerous, which is why it was banned from pubs and cafes.

But theres no evidence occasional second hand exposure is actually dangerous. Its gross but so are people from Adelaide and you dont see me asking to ban those mutants from the MCG

Congratulations on your baby girl :)
But that's shocking :(
Sums up why smoking shouldn't just be banned outside stadiums , but eventually made illegal in all public places

I'm ok with smoking rooms . As long as those segregated rooms aren't ventilated (because otherwise the air conditioning spreads the smoke throughout the airport )- so that the rest of us don't have to breath in the filth . But a total ban (like on flights!) is better .

Surely the reason you started smoking is of little consequence to the fact that you choose to continue?

Dumb comment.

Plenty of people have lost family members to the health concerns caused by smoking....so of course those people would be anti-smoking and want it removed from society, or at least away from them in public places.

Just like those who lose loved ones to drink driving, would be anti-drink driving.

There's some loons out there who argue it's their fundamental right to do that too, but they get shouted down.

Im fine with people being anti smoking or anti drinking. Its being anti drinker or anti smoker i have a problem with.

yep ban smoking (non smoker btw) as history shows us prohibition worked so well with alcohol and drugs and cost the community almost nothing to enforce

Dont worry too much, middle eastern crime gangs have picked up the slack massively and importation of counterfeit cigarettes is at an all time high. Even the Saudi embassy is rumoured to be involved.

Soon to be $45 for a pack of 30s.

Plain packaging was a good idea though, heaps of my mates quit after that was introduced.
