Snakes

Used to get plenty of browns around home. I don't mind em, but if they're close to the house (dogs, little sister and old girl used to freak) either the old man or I would get rid of them with a shotgun or shovel.

Would be interested in getting a pet python one day - always thought they were pretty cool

We get browns in almost plague proportions at my work during the summer months. Normally end up killing about 25-30 of them. We got our first on Thursday, measured at 123cm long.

Had one crawl across my show whilst I was carrying a big heavy box with a workmate. That was interesting. Ended up nearly breaking my ankle after dropping the box and trying to jump over it to get away from the thing.

As a keen hiker and ex-field geologist, I've seen plenty of snakes, but I actually like them. Most memorable encounters were:

* When working in western Tassie, we used to see 1-5 big black tiger snakes every day when doing fieldwork on heavily rainforested slopes. They'd get out of the way, but it was unnerving because of how thick the scrub was - a 2m snake was invisible when it left the track.

* While doing some fieldwork near Broken Hill, I went for a quick piss on some bushes, and a brown snake lifted its head up about 1m in front of me to take a look. The brown snake won and I retreated ;)

* While walking next to the Buchan River, I saw a large red-bellied black snake. It lifted its head up for 10-15 seconds to take a look, then took off into the river, swimming about 30-40m down the river before disappearing on the other side. Impressive.

* While climbing Mt Cobbler near the boarder of Vic/NSW, I was climbing up over a rock outcrop when I came face to face with a little (~1m) tiger snake. It got such a shock, it literally jumped in the air about 10-20cm while wriggling around, then took off. I also nearly fell backwards off the rock outcrop and had a minor coronary.

* While walking across a button-grass plain in Kosciusko NP, I looked down to see that I had one foot either side of a tiger snake with a yellow belly. All of a sudden I was 3 metres away without thinking about it with a massive adrenaline rush while the snake slowly disappeared...

No need to kill them - just leave them alone and they will do the same to you. Why anyone would kill an animal that feeds predominantly on rabbits, rats and mice is beyond me.

My dog got killed by a tiger snake found the dog dead in the backyard with the dead snake next to him.

So sorry to hear that mate. My sympathies are with you. Had the same thing happen to one of our dogs in the past. That's the only instance where I'll go out of my way to kill a snake (or anything for that matter), if it's proving a threat to my dogs.

Absolutely petrified of snakes, yet love watching docos about them and love checking out the reptile house and the zoo. Terrified of them but find them fascinating at the same time.

Lucky enough not to have had too many encounters with snakes over the years. The last time was years ago when I was in the States. I was mucking around on an old dirt bike in our friends backyard and almost ran over a pretty harmless bull snake. Nevertheless I gunned the bike and screamed like a little girl. My dad and bro went rattle snake hunting with a local hunter, said they totally crapped themselves...smart guys the men in my family lol.

Is the story in the defecating oneself thread?

Had a cat that was bitten by a tiger snake when I was a little 'un. The ol' man took it to the vet, shot it up with anti-veneme and the moggy was good as gold (cost a few hunnerd bucks). Got the cat home and it ran onto the road and was mown down by a car. Waste o' dough.

I've learnt to respect them.
They serve a purpose for the ecology of the Australian bush, however, they are a threat to both human and pet.
About 2 years ago we had a family dog killed by a tiger snake, and now we have a new dog of similiar breed and behaviour and we are extremely worried when summer comes around.
The next door neighbour's dog was found dead on our property yesterday, likely from snake bite. So its danger time.
