If Dawson, Johnson and McPhee line up down back round one while Silvagni plays WAFL there will be some disappointed Freo supporters.

All three of those guys have performed well this preseason, snos is very important but with mayne and Anthony's inability to hit the scoreboard snos may be needed forward

Pretty much a certainty not to be playing round 1 unless he gets an opportunity next week an proves himself.

From what i can gather Lyon is very strict an you must be performing in training or in these practice matches to earn a spot(as it should be).
Name an past means F all.
If your not showing it you will not get a game

In lyons mind Dawson an Mcpharlin are our best 2 backs
IMO Silvagni could be our 2nd best i can see why Lyon rates Dawson though.
So Silvagni is fighting for the 3rd tall role against Duffield,MJ an Mcphee.
All of them add more rebounding ability, plus they have been showing very good signs in practice games an training.

Hopefully Silvagni isnt too injured because i wont be suprised if all or 2 of Duff,MJ,Mcphee get rested next game meaning Silvagni gets chance to prove himself.

silvani is easily our second best tall defender but if the boys can step up abit more then maybe putting him forward would be a good option. we are in desperate need of a power forward

Hmm, perhaps he is a too similar player to McPharlin and we might want two different tall defenders.

Find this really strange, Silvagni has shown that he can come back underdone very easily. Injury can't be to bad if he is playeing Wafl. And I'd have him in before Dawson...

Agree.

So why did Riewoldt or Goddard just to name two keep getting a game last year when they were doing so poor.

He is just being managed isn't he? If he is playing WAFL then it sounds to me like they just want him to get some gametime, as a forward to create another option, while still giving players like Bradley and Anthony and Mayne some time to show their stuff. Of those 4, I think there is fewer question marks about Silvagni as an afl quality player.

I don't really care if he plays forward or back, but I would be very surprised if Lyon's first priority wasn't defense. That is, if he decides to use Silvagni forward then he clearly thinks that he would not be missed from the backline.

It's concerning isn't it. SCOS is a much better option for a key back than Dawson and he's more flexible as shown by his stints up forward and the occasional tap. Maybe Lyon's got the Dawson-coloured glasses on. ever colour that would be?

Im not so certain that this is the case. i think dawsons kicking is underrated and i think he is a better spoiler than silvagni. they are both great defenders IMO, but i wouldnt say silvagni is a much better option

i agree - not sure grover and johnson will be able to hold their spots this year - they may become injury cover

Too bad medibank stadium doesn't exist anymore.

Agree with grover (massive respect to his intensity but the game just isnt getting any slower), though Johnson could force his way in if in best form.

Snos can play on medium forwards. For me Dawson, McPharlin and Silvagni should be first picked for our back line if fit.

I absolutely agree with you and cant believe that Ross could think otherwise. In many games last year SNOS was all that held the defence together. He plays like he has an extra 10cms. because he reads the path of the ball and the game play so well.

Competition for the back line is great for us, Snos, Anthony, even Johnson can play at both ends.
Hopefully we wont see teams getting a easy run, and scoring quickly against freo. The back half should be our strength this year.
Snos had to take the power forwards last year, I would love to see how he would go against the smalls, Tarrant was so good because he could play on anyone.

Not happy with SNOS not getting a game this weekend for Freo if he isn't injured. I am now wondering if Ross wants him as a forward. He is so solid in defence and I have full faith he can play on the biggest opponents.

I don't want Dawson to take his position, I wan't them to work togther. If SNOS starts the season in the WAFL we won't have our best 22 out there.

100% agree.

yeah, not knowing what's going on with SNOS is really grinding my gears. I can only think that he's only in this position because McPharlin and Dawson can only play in defence. Perhaps that leaves SNOS on the outer defensively as he's more flexible than the other two and can be developed as a forward. I've got complete confidence that he could be a good to great forward, but it's the not knowing that has me confuzzled.

I would imagine the pressure from the match committe and assistant coaches on Ross , to play Silvagni would be irresistable.

If he isn't injured he will play RD 1.
After his extraordinary return from injury last year, it's a no brainer really.

This is all part of Ross Lyon's cautious approach with players.

it's ross lyons cautious approach & maybe he is holding his cards closer to his chest than we think & doesn't want other clubs to know his plans for round 1

maybe this is his plan after all, our back line is looking good & has depth on most levels
in some ways it seems like anthony would be a better option to turn into a tall backman if we can cement silvani a spot into our forward line

either way it's good to have more options open & perhaps easing silvani into the new role might be easier on him in the wafl than the afl. not so much pressure before the season starts.
