....because the players roll around 'in agony' when they fall over. It is not the way Australians play sport.

Exactly. Football is the most individually and culturally expressive game in the world. If any other sport was as popular worldwide, I daresay the difference in playing styles between countries would not be as marked as in football.

Therefore, you are right... Aussies DO NOT generally roll around on the ground like an idiot trying to get a foul. It is part of the Aussie style of play. Leave the diving up to the Italians, Germans or South Americans. ;)

I don't think so.

Maybe you sense that because the SMH has only very recently taken the decision to start calling soccer "football".

In NSW its far more likely for the media to call the games
LEAGUE
UNION (or RUGBY)
SOCCER
RULES (or AFL)

In VIC its more likely for the media to call the games
FOOTBALL (AFL)
RUGBY (League & Union) - [uneducated Mexicans]
SOCCER

In QLD its far more likely for the media to call the games
LEAGUE
UNION
SOCCER
RULES (or AFL)

Yes, i'm not disputing this, what i'm talking about is the likelihood of what people could refer the game to. To me, it's seems far more likely that people would refer to the game as 'football' in NSW than in Vic for example. I'm not talking about current mass perceptions. I mean how often is the game referred to as football in Victoria? Whereas, I can confidently ring up some friends here, say 'lets go play football', or pick up a paper where it will be headlined 'football'. I can't see that happening in Victoria at present.

I just wish the mods would shut this crappy thread down, it doesn't belong here.

Look, I'm happy for it to be moved. Personally, I think it's generated alot of intersting debate on the rship between the terms and sports themselves, and thus think it's in the right spot. However, if you still think its innapropriate why not just contact the mods and see what they say.

You're probably right. It has more chance to become the lingo in Sydney than Melbourne. But thats only because Rugby League has a rock solid name, whereas AFL are all over the shop on the exact name of their game and end up just using football.

Btw, The true name of the game in my view is "Australian Rules".

When Aussie footy starts to spread its wings overseas, which it will, I am sure we will start to see individual styles of footy reflecting each nation’s character.

We have already seen how the Irish can contribute their own particular style to Aussie Rules, in the form of International Rules.

But what would the Brazilians add to our game? A Brazilian samba style flair?
Now wouldn’t that be something, Australia playing Brazil in Rio, with all those scantily clad beauties singing and swaying to their samba drums.

What about South Africa? Not the South Africa of the white Afrikaans minority, but the locals who have now started playing Aussie footy?

Then on the other hand, could the dour Germans or Norwegians add anything positive to our game. They would probably turn every game into a borefest, as the ‘Snorway’ soccer team usually does.

The Rumanians, well they would probably take a bite out of our players necks at every opportunity.

And if the Pommy BAFL ever got really going, they could add their own solid black pudding style, as in the Yorkshire martial art, Eckithump, in which the protagonists use dried black puddings. But it would just make just another game that we could humiliate the Poms at.

I still remember the scathing headlines in the Pommy press when the Socceroos beat them 3-1 at their own game, in their own backyard .

Imagine if we could do this with footy.

If it's a girls sport, then why is it played in just about every country in the world, and is the most popular game in the world.

If Oz Rules had started same place and same time as the pitiful specatacle of a sport you speak of it wouldn't exist.
this is why this thread has to be relegated to a rightful $hithole somewhere.

Try:

European colonialism taking it to the third world.

It is also the simplest game to arrange in third world countries because you don't need much space and all you need is a ball. The net is hardly a prerequisite to play.

And while we're at it - like it or not - it wont be truly the 'world sport' until the Yanks embrace it. Sure a lot of American women play soccer (after all, it is a non-contact sport), but Soccer will never be the dominant football game there, nor will it be here. It will remain the sport of choice for anglophiles, recent immigrants and those who don't like to play contact sports (or like writhing on the ground in 'agony').

This will be my last post on the subject - I don't want the Fireman to have a heart attack (though others might!).

You have right of last reply 'RealFootball'....

there must be something good about the game that has kept it going for so many years as the worlds primary sport.

Lets be open minded...

Soccer is a game for two year olds who are learning to exercise
hand/foot/eye-coordination.
It is not a contact sport and therfore will always be less inportant than rubgy , AFL , Gridiron , and hockey(ice).
Oh and did I mention that it is very gay.

Pity you haven't read any of the posts in the threads. The same ignorant and false perceptions keep coming up. Mate, just face it, football is the world game, whether you like it or not, and it's presence is forever increasing in the ever shrinking global environment. Remember, it's 2005! It's now taken over as the no1 youth sport in the US anyway. http://www.decatursports.com/articles/soccer_participation.htm

Thanks for the right of last reply. I'll keep to the facts

Does it mean that you play? I suggest reading the first 400 posts.
