Something is on the nose...and it's Collingwood

I have always hated Collingwood but I have mates who love them and I actually said to them how sorry i was for them. They are shattered. Obviously they screwed up but 3 things stand out as inexcusable behaviour to me.

1/ Publicly airing Treloar's vulnerability re mental health regarding his ability to cope with his family being interstate and using it as an excuse to solve their own salary cap stuff up. Unbelievable, disgraceful.
2/ Using his wife as a scapegoat and a trigger to again solve their own stuff ups.
3/ Airing rumours about player discontent about Treloar. Scumbags.

The AFL tries to hang its hat on every social issue it can but this week has proven that when it comes to respecting mental health and respecting the equality of women, its all just window dressing.

They would be hoping that the Brown and Daicos boys come on pretty quickly to cover their midfield.

Given the level of vitriol and fallout they almost would have been better off keeping their players, going over the cap, and throwing themselves at the mercy of the AFL with draft sanctions instead. Im sure Eddie and the Pies could spin the unpredictable list/cap sizes following COVID into a believable excuse.

When the captain puts his relationship with the coach and execs above his teammate's welfare he has to go. Shameful silence from Pendelbury.

Excellent point, that neither the captain or coach fulfilled their responsibility.

I doubt that anyone was surprised that Bevo and the Dogs leaders immediately wrapped their arms around Treloar and gave him an immediate taste of how comforting team can be. Very predictable. You just know Bevo would do that, and be sincere.

You also know instinctively that Bevo would have been all around Dunkley this week, with the same message. Showing him he is one of his boys until the day he is not.

Those standards of behaviour are equally applicable with players being potentially forced out. However this works out, right now you are a Collingwood player and you are one of my players, and you are valued. I'm going to do everything I can to help you work through this.

I could be wrong but I see the captain as a bridge between the coaching and playing group, but ultimately the captain should be on the players side and not managements so yes, I agree with you that Pendlebury should be doing a lot better than he is.

Rhetoric is all you have.

Record membership.
Solid sponsor acquisition.

Pert has done all the stock standard CEO chores competently.

Goodwin was the result of a carefully laid succession plan under PJ. He was always going to get a proper go regardless of which CEO stepped in. You really think Pert was going to sack Goodwin based on that shitlist of yours?

There isnt much more Pert could have done in his short tenure to date without jeopardising the stability PJ helped bring to the club.

I wasn't sure about him to begin with but happy to call a spade a spade. He has been solid without being exceptional. 1 poor year on field which we improved on from a fitness, personnel and performance aspect.

You? Balanced? Now that is delusional.
Pert wasn't Jacksons man. Jackson recommended Josh Mahoney as CEO but the board selected Pert.
Under Pert the club has gone nowhere in regards to finding a new training base.
Gave Goodwin a three year contract extension while still having a year left to serve on his current contract before a game had been played in 2019. It's not like he was being chased by other clubs. Now we are facing a big pay out if we get rid of Goodwin & all signs are that a poor start next season might see him out the door. Pure incompetence in that regard.

If only they'd just fess up and tell the members that they screwed the cap and were forced to move players out reluctantly.

All the bullshit about wanting to hit the most compromised draft of all time, and the "the media just want something to talk about" is driving Pie fans insane, and I can't blame them. The spin has been diabolical from Walsh, Guy and Eddie.

I've never seen a club get it so wrong, so badly.

Just cast your gaze some 650 km west of Melbourne.

Fair point about the new base.

I think the Goodwin contract is being over blown here though. It's not unusual for a club to give a contract extension (context: making finals for the first time in over a decade) to a coach with a year to go. Unless you're suggesting Goodwin would have been given the boot after 2019 (if uncontracted) its moot. If not, he would have been re-signed anyway.

You could argue that perhaps 2 yrs would be less risky than 3 (3 a little generous) but that's about it IMO. Either way it was ratified by the board.

Further, if we make finals in 2021 nobody will care.

Re: other clubs, Ricciuto (one of his best mates) was in his ear about going back to the Crows so you're wrong on that.

PJ wasn't impressed with how Pert was appointed and that was a part of the reason I wasn't sure about him. I wont judge his performance on that though.

Dont expect the media to have the balls to ask tough questions.
Those days are well gone. They wont even ask governments anything but fluff these days for fear of lost access.

You;d think it'd be simple to ask Bucks and Ed to go on record right now once and for all...answer a couple of obvious questions all pies fans would want explained.
Dont hold your breath waiting. Its all about TIME. In just a short while they can palm this off as "why are you dragging this up now ? This was all addressed at the time" Next question.
If they dont take it seriously...why should members and fans take their club seriously ?
They need to be hurt where it matters immediately so that the luxury of time isnt the ruling factor.

King was having none of Ned Guy on Fox, but Tom Morris was basically walking the dumb campaigner through the interview. Was so weird

The question I asked was a rhetorical question. It's pretty obvious that he has been terrible for Melbourne. Anyone that saw it as an actual question is obviously living in La La Land.

I'm not sure if you are aware, but the NT game was allocated by the AFL to Melbourne, they got no revenue for it. The AFL, Gold Coast, and the NT have done a deal to set up NT as a zone for Gold Coast to get priority players from. Pert didn't get Melbourne out of the NT, the AFL replaced the Melbourne game with GCS to help GCS out. After trying to make the best of a sh*t situation for years the AFL just pulled the rug out from underneath MFC. The way that Melbourne tried to spin it was embarrassing.

In two years Melbourne have added a fitness bloke and an assistant coach. Amazing. That's the best you can do?

Melbourne did make finals in Perts first year - he joined in June. You seriously attributing that success to him???? And nearly making finals 2 years after making finals, and an abysmal season in between, is hardly something to hang your hat on.

And Goodwin being under the pump this year - he has 2 years left!!! On big money!!! He has a history of poor decision making - Gambling, Violence, PED's. He had been repeatedly out-coached over several years, and shown no ability to adapt or be innovative as a coach. He should be unemployable, but Pert gave him an extension!???? F@$k me.

I think I'm normally pretty balanced and open to other opinions, but I don't think I have ever encountered someone as delusional as you. You're like one of those poverty-stricken redneck Trump supporters that are campaigning to get rid of healthcare and education.

Mate you can start another thread on why Goodwin is bad for Melbourne and I would be first to agree with you. Having him in charge of young men is bordering on negligence on behalf of the club. And that's before we even get into his actual coaching ability.

Now back to Collingwood...

Rabble.

Here's a tip

BBQ the membership cards instead. Don't damage your microwave and don't inhale toxic fumes inside your home. Ensure your heatbeats are white when you fling your memberships in the flames.

Marinate some chicken thigh the night before in olive oil, oregano, paprika, salt, pepper and lemon. Throw it on the BBQ afterwards and enjoy a beautiful souvlaki too.

Chicken? What is wrong with you? Pork fillets or lamb at a minimum.

Here's a tip...Treloer can actually make some nice dollars out of them for the stress they have caused him by treating him the way they did. Can't discriminate the way they did.

Nicely said.

The Stephenson decision is baffling to me and salary is the only thing which makes remote sense. Stephenson's crime is, what... being too quiet? He could be a mute for all I care. Not getting over glandular fever quickly enough? The gambling was dumb, but come on. He's had a poor season but many young forwards have fluctuations in form.

Stack and Coleman-Jones embarrassed the whole league and acted like a bunch of entitled children yet they didn't get traded and Hardwick openly had the attitude of "yeah they were morons but hopefully they can learn from it and grow up and we stick together". If Richmond can look at 2020 as a teaching lesson, surely Collingwood can. And even if it is really just about money and these rumours are just excuses a) you shouldn't get into salary trouble with a player who's been in the system for, what, three years and b) the lies, personal attacks and BS is ridiculous.

I feel sorry for all of the pies players who were traded and unlike some players who act like spoilt idiots, these players actually were done hard by. Collingwood overpaid some players but I'm sure if they tried to renegotiate salaries or were upfront about the reasons with the media and players it'd be so much better. Whoever decided to blame the players needs to be dropkicked into the sun. Awful decision.

"We tried to win a flag with but due to unfortunate circumstances with some player contracts, we have not been able to keep the players we have recruited on the park. The club has decided that it needs more cap flexibility moving forward, and feels the need to readdress some of the payments of players. It's tough business, but this is a business and we need to make cuts to remain under the salary cap. It's frustrating but it's necessary, and we will keep trying to build a premiership list."

This is so much better and emphasises that, yes, Collingwood made some poor moves but it was all to win a flag. Now, they've thrown players under the bus and have made themselves persona non grata to many free agents. Sure, it still means that players have been targeted for money but it's obvious that players have been targeted anyway.
Spot on.

Needing to get rid of Treloar was very similar to what happened with Woewodin at Melbourne. Signed him to a massive contract after a great year then realised they had overpaid and were going to have a salary cap problem. Coincidently he went to Collingwood and Melbourne had to pay a big part of his contract.

The difference is Melbourne were honest about it. Woewodin was one of the most loved players by the fans, and everyone was pissed off that it had to happen - but I don't recall anyone feeling deceived or lied to. It was seen as poor management, not the manipulate crap that is going on at Collingwood

Thats because (as we all know) in sport a footballer is far more likely to at least ask a pertinent question than anyone calling themselves a journo. It is now not the job of a journo to delve into anything...its just about asking whatever they think might endear themselves to whoever they "interview".

Its neither a profession nor even a career path these days. Certainly no need for any tertiary education, where all that happens is students get told how to think like sheep, by biased old failed drunks.

I dont see Ned Guy as the problem. Doesnt make much sense it is his "fault". So the members do need to get onto it.

There would have been plenty of informal talk at the pool bar up in the hub between senior AFL types and Collingwood top brass warning of the consequences of salary cap breaches. IMO the Pies were told to sort their shit out asap. Shambles, nothing more. Too many ego's and big noters at the Pies putting themselves ahead of the club.

Unless they win the flag next year, I find it hard to see how Buckley can win back the faith and trust of the Collingwood fan base, who generally speaking, are a loyal and forgiving lot.

Obviously it's not all his fault, but the way he has handled it and been exposed as a liar along the way, has seriously damage Nathan Buckley's standing in the game.

I lost faith after the 2018 grand final where we changed our game style to the boring, defensive, high possession approach. Everything that went right that year has not been implemented since and the results have been telling. The slide will continue unless mass changes happen in the coaching and football departments.
