'Like any other oppo': No extra attention for gun former Lions

Sophie Conway says Brisbane will treat Hawthorn like "any other oppo" as it prepares to face a Hawks outfit littered with Lions connections in Sunday's qualifying final.

Hawthorn has been one of the great stories of the 2024 AFLW season, clinching second spot, and the McClelland Trophy, with a late surge against Richmond at the weekend.

It's been a remarkable first season at the helm for Daniel Webster, who won the Hawthorn coaching job after spending two years as Brisbane's midfield coach under Craig Starcevich.

Emily Bates and Greta Bodey headed south 12 months earlier as the young Hawks began their climb.

Conway, who is ready to go after overcoming a heavy landing her on shoulder late in Sunday's win over St Kilda, was full of praise for this weekend's opponent.

"It doesn’t surprise me they've gone well with Daniel Webster at their helm," Conway said.

"They've got some quality, quality players among their side. Good on them. They've been working hard since they've come into the comp and now have some things ticking.

"They've got players across all lines that we'll really have to hone in on."

Brisbane has won the only two contests between the club, including a 27-point triumph at Frankston last season.

Conway said that meant nothing.

"I think it's a totally different team. We played them last year and they stuck with us for a half before we got our game going … but if you look from last year to this year they've come on in leaps and bounds and credit to them.

"I can’t wait. I think it's going to be a quality contest."

The star winger loves each of the Lions that headed to Hawthorn and said Brisbane would not put any extra preparation into them than anyone else.

"We came up against Emily and Greta last year, so playing them this year is like any other oppo," she said.

"To be honest we've got a lot of things to worry about more than just the Brisbane Lions threads and connections.

"It might get spoken about once or twice, but it won't be too much we focus on."

Five Lions named in AFLW All-Australian squad

The Brisbane Lions have had five players named in the 2024 AFLW All-Australian squad.

Captain Bre Koenen, Ally Anderson, and Sophie Conway along with first timers Belle Dawes and AFLW leading goalkicker, Taylor Smith have all been named.

It’s an extra impressive achievement for Anderson and Conway, being nominated for the second consecutive season.

Two-time All-Australian, Anderson has enjoyed another strong year averaging 26 disposals, six tackles and five clearances to remain one of the league’s premier inside midfielders.

While 2023 All-Australian Conway will be looking for her second blazer after her stellar campaign last season.

Averaging 18 touches, five tackles and booting 12 goals for the year, Conway has played a combination of inside and outside midfield, demonstrating her ability to play multiple positions.

Ally Anderson, Sophie Conway, Belle Dawes and Taylor Smith have been rewarded for their outstanding seasons, named in the 2024 AFLW All-Australian side at Monday night’s W Awards.
For Lions winger Conway she secured her second All-Australian team selection after being named in squad in 2020 and 2021.

Her selection follows a career-best season with the hard running winger, averaging 17.4 disposals, 5.1 tackles and 3.2 marks this year.

FROM family in the Ikon Park grandstands to her mum watching “from above”, Sophie Conway knows she’s running out with more than just her 20 Brisbane teammates against North Melbourne on Saturday night.

The two-time All-Australian winger lost her mum Christine to cancer in 2016, more than a year before she was drafted by the Lions.

Since then, Team Conway – father, John, brothers Ben and Isaac, along with Sophie – have only grown closer.

The trio will all be in attendance to see if the family’s youngest member can help Brisbane to a record-equalling third premiership against the Kangaroos. And Conway could not be happier.

“Our family has been through a fair bit,” Conway told AFL.com.au.

“We’re a close-knit family.

“Being the only girl, I have a special bond with both of my brothers.

“From the moment mum got diagnosed (in 2013 when Sophie was 13) until the moment she passed … we continued to grow closer together.

“There were obviously some tough times there and when mum passed, we had to lean on each other more than we ever have.

“I play for them, and I also play for mum. I feel like I’m doing her proud. I hope I’m doing her proud.”

That she is.

Conway has been a major reason for Brisbane’s success in recent seasons, playing in both premierships and starring with her excellent ball use, nous inside forward 50 and hard, two-way running.

She was the Lions’ top vote-getter at the W Awards earlier this week, finishing sixth overall behind Ebony Marinoff, and won her second consecutive AA jacket.

That “special bond” with her brothers is lived out, week to week.

Isaac, who spent 12 months at the Lions after being taken by the club in the 2013 Rookie Draft, lives in Melbourne and is Conway’s biggest supporter and toughest critic.

“They both get around it massively, but in different ways. Ben’s very nice and Isaac’s very direct,” she said.

“I got a fair bit of feedback after the goal I missed on the weekend from Isaac.

“He is pretty involved. He puts some numbers on my game that I think are very unrealistic.

“He goes: 'I’m not asking for much, but I want x, y and z from you'.

“Each and every weekend, I’m thinking: 'I don’t know what position you think I’m playing to get that'.

“It comes from a good place, obviously. He loves seeing me do well, he loves seeing me succeed.

“It’s pretty special when you have both your brothers so invested in what you do, from pre-game text messages to post-game messages to everything in between.

“It’s a nice feeling knowing you’ve got both your big brothers in your corner.”

After her debut in 2018 and the round 10 win over St Kilda this year, it will be just the third time the entire family have been at a game together to watch Conway.

“I feel privileged to do what I do.

“It’s sometimes hard to comprehend at times because if I could have anything, I’d love for mum to be able to watch one game, but I know she’s watching from above.

“I hope she’ll be there, not hope, I know she’ll be there this weekend.”
