The mighty North West
AFL Club
Melbourne
It may be strange that a Victorian is posting on this particular board - and I don't intend to extract the urine, I actually want to get in touch with South supporters.

The parallels between my club (Melbourne) and South are spooky.

* The oldest clubs in their respective states
* MFC has won 12 flags, South 11 - but all of them won a LONG time ago
* Last flag won for both clubs - 1964
* Both clubs are a major source of frustration and heartache for their supporters - but we keep following them because we don't know any better, like the conditioned masochists we are

Am I being too presumptuous? Have I got some facts wrong? Enlighten me, Panthers supporters; I'm quite ignorant about the SANFL because, quite frankly, I've previously had no reason to be interested in it. But South fascinate me, and I'll be following their scores closely next year.

Any info you can give me would be much appreciated:thumbsu:

As a South Adelaide fan and a Geelong fan i am quite confidant that 2008 will be the year of the Panther. Geelong broke the drought after 44 years and South will next year, the only problem is that south seemed to care that there reserves made the grand final more than the fact that thier senior team was discusting

South have been in turmoil for years, and for many reasons, they had an oval built Panther Park in ST.Marys which was never used for SANFL games and so had their home games played at Adelaide Oval for many years. Their club is now owned by the SA squash society [I think]Then with the housing boom down south of Adelaide which was their recruiting grounds as well they chose to build a new home at Norlunga. This lost them many of their older fans [to their games] but it was built in the hope that they would become the new Central Districts their crowd attendance is poor, is this due to their performances or the distance to the ground? I don't know. They then started to pay players from Victoria or whereever and this looked like working in 2006 when they played good footy, however this year under Pyman they imploded and players such as Archard walked out...Pyman was given his marching orders and they have now lined up John Cahill [the Powers first coach] to get them back on track. It looks like they have some very good young talent so hopefully some better years ahead...go the Panthers

They're an utter rabble at the moment players are leaving left right and centre.

Even this years best and fairest player is about to announce which club he is playing for.. and it aint South.

Personally I couldn't agree more. The manner in which certain South players colluded to get rid of Pyman was disgraceful. The fact that the club knew it and not only allowed it to happen, but endorsed it by sacking him essentially tells you all you need to know about the culture at the club.
Even funnier is reports that Cahill intends to groom one of the players responsible for the coup as the clubs coach in two years time! I guess all you can say to that particular player is 'you reap what you sow'.
There will be a mass exodus from the club including players like McGlone and Bennett. They are leaving not because of the previous coach (as some have tried to claim), but because of the infighting that ruined the club. The fact that they still want to leave tells you a lot about who they think was responsible for last season.

Having said that, they could actually improve next year. If Torney plays and Doughty spends a lot of time in the SANFL (as expected), they could improve. Of course it won't last long until they decide to start knifing the coach again!!

The guys that have chosen to stay at Sth. are all there for the right reasons now and are looking forward to a new start and challange this season. Pyman caused his own demise! Underhandedness and personal gain are not qualities that a team can or will put up with and can only cause ill feeling and certain demise within a club/team.

All the players and management staff have the highest regard for Clay Sampson (captain) and his new role as assisstant coach/captain is welcome with open arms.

A new era for the Panthers is about to dawn............:thumbsu::) Jack Cahill is going to unleash hell.

Funny I speek with a player from down there he just keeps saying theres no players left.

Funniest post ever!

Actually, is that you Clay? That would be the only way anyone could write such crap!
I particulalry like this bit: Pyman caused his own demise! Underhandedness and personal gain are not qualities that a team can or will put up with Um...., so why is Clay still there?? I'm afraid all that South has done in the last 6 months is to reinforce and reward such behaviour. Go back and read the report on the going on at South.

Oh and this bit was also enjoyable: All the players and management staff have the highest regard for Clay Sampson (captain) and his new role as assisstant coach/captain is welcome with open arms.
Um, also not true. There are several high ranking people at South who have little to no respect for the Captain. Particularly after he promised at the end of 2005 that 2006 would be his last year as Captain so that the club could develop new leaders for the future. At the start of 2007 Clay then claimed to have not made this promise at all, and this is where the problems started. I'm sorry but when you give your word to do something for the betterment of the club and then go back on your word for selfish reasons, you don't gain respect. I'm sorry but if you want to point fingers at what happened to the Panthers in 2007, point them directly at this decision by Clay.
Ask yourself this question, how many coaches has Clay now had whilst he has been Captain? How succesful has the club been under his leadership? A change was required, but unfortunately one mans selfishness brought the club dwon yet again.
Oh and if there was such respect for the man, why is there an unprecedented rush to leave the club?
As for Cahills crap about players being there for the right reasons and not the money, wait and see what he spends on recruiting!
Oh and like you, I can't wait to see the Hell he unleashes. Particularly when the debt collectors arrive at the oval!;)

Sturt

Disappointing to lose Scotty. He's the second B+F winner in a row to walk out on the club.

Archard has been linked with North.

Other than a couple of periods of sunshine South Adelaide have been a rabble since the second World War. Between 1945 and 1963 their highest finish was 6th and remember for that period they were playing in an 8 team competition. As long ago as 1959 they only survived by the casting vote of the league president. There were moves to bring Central District into the comp. Four of the league clubs wanted them in and South out, the other four wanted a ten team comp and that's what the League President voted for. Was he right?

Of course they won the flag in 1964, after being bottom in 1963, they were very competitive in 1965 and 1966, but by 1969 they were bottom again.

They were competitive again under Haydn Bunton in the late 1970s, and of course played in the 1979 Grand final. I always thought that they played a negative, chipping style of footy in those days that would account for the poor teams (which included my mob at the time), but I didn't think they could ever beat Port when it counted. Interestingly though, Barrie Robran who was coach of North in 1979 thought that South were easily the best side that year and only the abysmal conditions and the toss of the coin cost them the 1979 flag.

Their next competitive period was under John Reid at the start of the 1990s. They were minor premier in 1991, but once again I didn't think that they had the game to succeed in finals. As a North supporter I thought at the time we had their measure when it counted, which was proven again to be correct.

Other than for a brief period in 2006 when they played the most scintillating footy I have ever seen from them, they have been very ordinary since the early 1990s.

They have won 11 flags, but 8 of them were prior to the turn of the century. That is the turn of the 19th to 20th century. Those flags were won when the SAFA was virually a 3 team comp, Norwood, Port and South were the only strong teams most years and finals were rarely played.

It will be interesting to see how they go under John Cahill, who as most South Australians know, was actually a South Adelaide supporter, who won the under 17s medal whilst playing for South before Port, to whom he was residentially tied, claimed him. Someone once said that South were the only club with 50 supporters and 51 factions. Kerley ruled the club for 3 years, Fos Williams couldn't quash the factions. Will Cahill be able to?

Between 1945 and 1963 their highest finish was 6th and remember for that period they were playing in an 8 team competition. This is in complete contrast to Melbourne's domination of that period.

As long ago as 1959 South only survived by the casting vote of the league president. There were moves to bring Central District into the comp. Four of the league clubs wanted them in and South out, the other four wanted a ten team comp and that's what the League President voted for. Was he right?

After a few elimination final losses in the early 1980s, more wooden spoons followed, as did the threat of extinction. Their next competitive period was under John Reid at the start of the 1990s. They were minor premier in 1991, but once again I didn't think that they had the game to succeed in finals. Just realised something then. Both West and South now have been coached by Williams,Kerley and Cahill. Thats pretty much the equivilent of 2 VFL clubs being coached by Mchale, Barassi and Sheedy(with apolgies to Yabby Jeans, Norm Smith and a few others!!)

I'm interested in what this comment is all about DD. Can you give us some more detail.

RE: Clay Sampson, I'm not involved with the club, just a supporter, but anyone who plays with the courage he shows with his crook shoulder, and is still worth his place in the side, is worthy of respect.

With South's recruiting, it seems a lot of it was 'mates of mates' already at the club, so they don't seem to have targeted particular players or types of players but just what they could get.

Not too optimistic about next year, but would rather see us struggle playing juniors rather than struggle playing older recruits past their best like this year.

S&A: one thing just floated into consciousness from my dim dark memory bank. After 1964 when South and Melbourne went top they played against each other at Norwood Oval for the title of premiers of Australia. I think barassi played. Melbourne won (what else?)

Cant comment in any more depth. sorry. Quote from player the other day "nice to have a coach that remembers youre name and doesn't just talk to a chosen 4or 5".

Boys are enjoying the change of culture and pace down south! welcome Jack. :) Even if the pace is HARD.

Interesting comments on the previous South Adelaide Coach...My recollection of a coach I had in a much lower standard of Footy at Association level was somewhat similar!! This twit only spoke to a handful of players also, he was I believe unpopular for this attitude alone! On top of this used to make some bizaare moves on the field also!!

For example, I recall one day( Long ago..) being somewhat lighter, I started on a wing and was having a pretty decent game, picking up many touches ( putting a few to advantage..LOL) although our team was getting flogged! At half-time he said " I'm moving you to Full-Forward ", I thought " Great, the ball was hardly getting down there ", but I managed to jag 1 Goal for the quarter, I think we managed 2 Goals for that term if we were lucky! Then the fool said to me " You can play the last quarter in the back pocket "...My team mates were as mystified as was I.!! This chappie got the boot at season's end, methinks he was the worst coach of a footy team ever!!

Not sure how many parallels there are with the previous South Coach! If there are a few, getting a new mentor with the fine record that John Cahill has can only be a forward step for THE PANTHERS...

John Cahill what a joke - the club will go backwards - he will not be up to the modern game - As for Clay Sampson should have retired from football years ago when he got delisted from Richmond - what I have learnt from players that come back into the SANFL that have played in the AFL that most think they are bigger than the club put together (enough said!!!)

Thats exactly what Jack is good at! Getting back to solid, tough, get to the ball first footy. The "Modern Game" was what Pyman baffled the players with to the point they didnt know if they were coming or going. 10 short passes before you get it out of the forward lines, then loose it to the opposition. :(

The Panthers will be fitter, tougher and display a totally differant game plan this season. They will also be a much happier UNIT of blokes. They already respect Jack and he is winning their trust. Something the previous coach never achieved.

It wont happen over night................;)

Ryhs Archard wasnt home sick at all he just made that up so he could come home to echuca and cause a stir there i think he just loves the attention from people, then when the attention ran out in echuca he took his whippet ass back to adelaide
