South Melbourne should have been renamed to South Sydney when they relocated.

Q: Why?
A: The competition could have kept a club named South in the competition and you just know that South Sydney Swans rolls off the tongue well.

Thoughts?

They wanted to appeal to all of Sydney and not just the south side of it

No idea if it was going to be a success, let alone think that GWS would be a thing one day
With a North Melbourne relocation going ahead, they could have become North Sydney and kept the whole North v South rivalry going strong.

Again though, that would have had to know the long term plan was to move North to Sydney.

Moving to Sydney was still a big unknown at that stage

like the brethren Rabbitohs and Roosters they tend to be the Swans more than anything nowadays. The unequivocal mascots in the domestic top flight leagues helps. Nationalisation diminishes ye old single city NSEWness, y2k era Wests Magpies and North Bears were merged out, and North Melbourne and Footscray had more of a mascot rebranding around the same time. Easts had that Syd City phase too. And of course the Swans were still often deadnamed as ‘South’ in the VFL press early on.

Worth noting that Bob Hawke was initially the relocated Swans no.1 ticket holder and was at their first home win (which happened to be the first ever ‘Sydney v Melbourne’ in AFL/RL). The following year he became PM and also became the no.1 ticket holder of the Raiders in their sophomore season. Illawarra Steelers (82-98) were also introduced at the same time (i.e. South South Sydney). The City of Sydney Astronauts also merged and rebranded as the Sydney Supersonics in 1982, and Sydney City (Hakoah) won the NSL in 1980-82, so that sporting market at that time was very interesting.

What if the SANFL weren't so arrogant in the 80s and accepted the VFL's invitation to join the VFL in 82 or 87 and the "Adelaide Football Club" entered the comp then? then none of that footy politics here in SA in 1990 would never have happened, the likes of Kernahan, Platten, Motley, Bradley, D. Jarman etc would have been in the inaugural Adelaide FC team.. could you imagine that side??? now that was a missed opportunity..
