South Wimmera Football League

I'm looking to gain information in regard to the South Wimmera Football League, and if anybody happens to know of it, I wonder if they can answer a couple of questions.

a) I've been gathering a list of the teams that participated, but I doubt that my list is complete. The clubs I am aware of so far include :

01 - Crowlands (unconfirmed).
02 - Glenorchy.
03 - Great Western (demons, Melbourne colours, at least 1 flag)).
04 - Halls Gap.
05 - Illawarra.
06 - Joel Joel (rovers).
07 - Landsborough.
08 - Marnoo (tigers, Richmond colours, at least 6 flags).
09 - Minyip.
10 - Moyston (unconfirmed).
11 - Murtoa.
12 - Pomonal (unconfirmed).
13 - Raglan (unconfirmed).
14 - Rupanyup (at least 1 flag).
15 - Saint Patricks (predominantly green guernsey). Where the hell were St Pats???
16 - Stawell Imperials.
17 - Stawell Swifts (at least 1 flag).
18 - Stawell Warriors.
19 - Ararat Trinity (red guernsey, perhaps like Melbourne's).

b) I've also been attempting to glean the premiers of each season, and so far only have the following information :

1935 - Marnoo.
1936 - Rupanyup.
1937 - Marnoo.
1938 - Drawn between Rupanyup and Marnoo, and not replayed due to fatality.
1948 - Either Swifts or Marnoo.
1950 - Swifts.
1951 - Either Swifts or Warriors.
1952 - Great Western.
1953 - Marnoo.
1956 - Marnoo.
1960's - Marnoo won two consecutive flags but I don't know the years.

If anyone happens to have further information to the above, I'll be surprised, but vastly appreciative. Yes, I am perfectly aware that this is a long shot.

Cheers.

don't have any info myself on South Wimmera League but the following thoughts might help:

1) Catherine Campbell compiled a centenary history of Marnoo and published in 1973, might mention the footy club. Noticed it on the State Lib. of Vic online catalogue

2) if you can find out when S.W.L. celebrated a landmark, i.e. 50th, 75th etc then one of the newspapers in the area might have included a supplement including lists of premiers

3) any of the clubs which still exist might include their premiership years on their letterhead - would be worth writing to or phoning the secretary

Good Luck!

Croucher,

I have a copy of the 'Fruitful Years', which is that history by AK Campbell, as suggested by yourself (tried for years to wean it away from Mum, actually, and only succeeded a year ago).

The clubs that used to compete, very good idea. I'll be onto that quick smart.

The Stawell Mail-Times has been the local newspaper there for over 100 years, so I can get onto that resource, too.

But, you see, I'm one of those lazy blokes that hopes he can win everything he needs from in front of the PC, so its gonnah take me some willpower to do something about these horridly active options!

Thanks for your help, though.

Gave me some excitement, too : Ooh someone's replied! Ahhrggh its croucher, he'll be suggestin' libraries and phone calls. Hehe.

Thanks, Dynamite-Pie, I'd already checked that site. You see the SWFL ceased at the end of 1969, and you'll find there's very few websites around that delve into teams and leagues that are no longer around.

Thanks, though, appreciate yer tryin' for me!

Well ... I couldn't find anything more on the SWFL, so I've taken the cheat's option and posted what I knew into a webpage, in hope someone will see it and contact me to tell me how much of it I'd got wrong!

If yer interested, my knowledge of the SWFL, the Kara Kara FL and the Richardson Valley Association are all accessible via http://www.lexicon.net/POTOC/atlasindex.html

Cheers.

Just a note of congratulation and encouragement. Well done!

Great to see the work you've put in...so what if there are a lot of gaps, at least you've made a start and those who can help out further have somewhere to contact.

Sorry I didn't reply earlier, my PC was down. Hope Xmas treated everyone well.

Yeah Woofer, a little. I found some old newspaper clippings about Marnoo which helped a little, and then contacted Phil from the 'Phil's World' who is slowly but surely compiling a complete national list of leagues and clubs going back as far as he can. He offered a little, but I'm taking it easy on interrogating him as he's busy enough getting his own site together.

I've since found info regards Mountain Creek FA (near Avoca/Moonambel), Pyrenees FA (Lexton area), Burrumbeet FA (per the town), Learmonth FA (per the town) and also on the Horsham South FA (Lah Arum and Wonwondah areas)

I'm enjoying the quest, and gradually building the info into my own site.

Hi.

So here's a long overdue reply.

Are you still after information on this league?

I've been chasing up history on the Halls Gap football club and found this old post.

The Halls Gap pub has some photos up of their teams including references to flag wins in 57, 63 & 64

Founded in 1929 until 1969 when most of the surviving clubs joined the Ararat DFA.
Prior 1926 to 1928 was the Stawell DFA.

1920 final was between Balmoral and Nurrabel but the article quality is so poor - judging by the second article Nurrabel won.

There is no reference to the association that I can find in 1921 or 1922 in this paper so I would assume it folded after one year. Living outside Victoria, I only have access via Trove.

In 1923, there is reference to a Balmoral-Salt Lakes-Miga Lake competition.

Certainly not related to the other South Wimmera Association. Sometimes associations wait a few years before changing names, the name become available. I known of four different South Gippsland Leagues.

The biggest example of this is the VFL. name used until 1989 then re-branded AFL in 1990.
VFA was re-branded VFL in 1996.
