I'm in my 2nd year of sports management and from placements i've done so far its basically who you know and what you've done. If you don't know anyone or aren't good at networking then your not going to get anywhere. Getting placements are obviously key if you can get them, but if not there is nothing wrong with volunteer roles on the resume, more so if you have held some responsibility in the role.

i had my heart set on sport management at deakin...but after reading this i have my doubts :(

I know how you feel.

I think Sports Management is just too constrictive.

Something like Commerce is so much broarder, and obviously gives more opportunities.

id be interested to know whether to just get a straight commerce degree and if that would be more suitable. I guess it depends whether you are dedicated to the sports industry or not

I graduated from Griffith University in July this year with a Bachelor of Business degree in Sports Management. I did a minor in Employment Relations. I'm trying to find a job in Employment Relations/Human Resources then once I have business experience cross over to Sport Management. Choose a minor or another major in a completely different area then cross over in the future (maybe 3-5 years after). Getting business experience is the key.

I am thinking of going to TAFE for a year then try and get into Deakin for Sport Management becuase my ATAR wasnt high enough. I think the Unis find everyone work experience placements which will improve the resume when looking for a job in relevent field. I know Latrobe get their students to do somework with Melbourne Heart in order to gain experience.

Hey guys. I love my Sport, particularly the numbers side of it. What course would you best recommend for me?

Cheers.

They don't make you. You can sign up to be on the volunteer list for Heart but there is limited opportunities available. Not everyone on the list has been asked to volunteer as yet either.

Can you get a masters/PhD in this course (Bach of Bus - Sport Mgt)?

Having graduated from a sports managment degree i think i can add a little to this topic. In my opinion sports managment always tops a commerce degree if you are planning on working in the sports field. The only issue is depending on where you are planning on studying. Deakin offers a very commerce focussed course whilst Ballarat offers a human movement based course. Each has various advantages and disadvantages but it is something you should all look at before commencing study. It seems a lot of you want to be specifically player managers, whilst this is great you have a goal i would be hesitant to pidgeon hole yourselves into that specific area as the other aspects of sports managment may be more suitable e.g. event management, marketing or health promotion areas of the industry. However with all of this being said just make sure you guys get the relevant field work done whilst you are studying so that you can get the experiance.

As Deakins course has changed from a B.Comm to a B.Bus, what do you think of that change?

From what i have heard it won't change alot. Maybe a few subjects here and there will change but the overall focus of the course will remain the same.
