You can't have it both ways. If you reward selection for effort then you can't just drop players after a win, unless their form was real poor.

Players did what was asked of them last week... doesn't matter who the opposition was.
I get what you're saying, but a few counter points, do you really think every player did what they were asked? Even Gresham (not having a crack, he's a first year player, but by no measure did he have a good game)? Could you not argue that Jack Lonie did exactly what he was asked and then some, and should be rewarded? If you win but with showed a massive flaw in your structure (i.e. key forward kicking 7 goals) do you refuse to adjust just because you still won?

Anyway I'm not hugely fussed about the selection, I just thought it was a bit odd and hope our coaches/selectors/players aren't getting to complacent after a win over the Dees.

I just see one change as minimum given that 2 emergencies were held back from VFL (goddard and Lonie)

Good points same way Acress was told and went out as a first year player could suffer the same. I believe both will be long term players for the Saints if managed properly which I think Richo is doing....ps love the points right at the bottom of your posts re give us a footy team! 4 games here (Hobart) 4 in Launy sick of paying other clubs we deserve our own. Have stopped 2 clubs going broke North and the Hawks we should be paying for our own....better stop now this is a Saints forum!!

People putting too much emphasis on height IMO.

Members will be great. Just not tall. as a mid-forward he reminds me of Hamill, who was just on 180cm.

having too many tall forwards may bring some clubs undone if the evidence of the change in game plan to the 2016 run and gun style continues.

It seems to me that the web style defence is creating smaller faster more mobile defences with one tall defender coupled with skilled intercept markers (eg Easton Wood 186 cm Sean Dempster 191 cm) and with great running users of the ball of HB. Sides seem happy to give a couple of marks to the opposition through mismatches inside 50 (ie ) as a trade off for better attack out of defence. (Jenkins last night 8 goals in a losing side)

The upshot of this is that forwards who aren't marking everything and can't get back fast enough after a turnover (ie Tom Boyd, Jon Patton) almost become a liability under this game plan.

With Bruce at 197 and Paddy at 195, Members is almost the ideal size third forward provided his fitness levels improve enough to enable him to get up the ground and then get back on the break.

ie do not care who it is but it should be one team would be Tasmania's team.....North offered us 7 games 3-4 years ago and we said no

One may have done what he was asked but that was in the seconds. Lonie was given 5 games and didn't do enough to keep his spot. He will get his chance but now its Jades turn. lets face it I doubt either of those 2 players will have much bearing on winning or losing. It will come back to the senior players. As for the key forward kicking 7 well I will take that every game if the final result is the same.

Gresh and Lonie swapping between VFL and AFL every week isn't good for anyone.

Yes we are a little short in defence, however at this point in time it seems we have 2 options:

1) Add some height, but do it with players who are not quite good enough, or developed enough, or in form enough,

or

2) Go with players who are experienced, reliable and in form, even if they are giving away a few cms.

So far we seem to be favouring the second option and it seems to be holding us in good stead.

And against the ladder leaders it's probably considered the approach more likely give us the chance of a win even if the North forward line resembles the Land of the Giants.

Good points Doc!

I would like to see us salt in a Goddard or Lee to get their experience up.
Makes it hard for either to come in and have an impact against the top team though.
Great if we played one of them against anyone in the bottom 8 for instance.

IMO, Lee should be a walk up start in the backline, and has more positives than negatives- Richo should really be ironing out the bugs on the run rather than dropping guys to VFL over some anal "non-negotiable" thing.
