Does anyone feel as I do that the umpiring in the NAB cup so far has lost the qualities that made it so good during the final series? We have returned to 50 metre penalties for trivial misdemeanours, applied seemingly at random, and without consistency. During last years finals, few free kicks were paid that were not earned, and there was a consistency to what was paid that made the games so much better. NAB cup so far has been all inconsistency. A deliberate out of bounds call to Dane Swan settled the game on Friday. A very similar action (by Sharrod Wellingham) went unpenalised. I support Collingwood, so both calls went my way, but they frustrated me as an indicator of what is to come. Could the umpires coach have his charges view last year's finals and try to emulate what happened there?
