Given the penalty handed down, the original wording of OP's hashtag becomes even more pertinent.

Steve Smith's just thrown away captaincy of the Australian cricket team as well as a year of his career in a (relatively) fleeting moment of stupidity. Irrespective of how much sympathy we feel or the level of punishment we think should be handed out, remember that a young man has just had his world turned upside down and is going to be in a ****ing dark place. Ditto for Bancroft and Warner. Yes they're in an incredibly privileged position that means they won't have to worry about money or prospects of future employment, but that doesn't take away from the fact that Smith in particular will be feeling like he's lost everything he's ever worked towards.

The lynch mob have had their public hanging, hopefully it's recognized by those around them that these 3 may need some help getting through the next few months.

Smith is an agreeable non-confrontational pushover (although endearing imo) who fell victim to the dickhead that is Warner. Smith should have never been captain and I hope by now he realises this. CA should have just stripped his captaincy, the 12 month suspension is a disgrace. Warner will hopefully never represent Australia again.

Stand by, Smith. For about a year.

I don't see any grounds for appeal, he has admitted his part so there is no questions around his involvement, could it be argued that its excessive, maybe but law isn't about fairness without being backed up by law so unless there is a case that he can point to which demonstrates the decision's unfairness then he has little chance of it being overturned.

the ACA are already onto it.

the fact he is guilty is done, he has admitted. There will no appeal on those grounds.

But the ban they got is totally disproportionate to the crime. its not even in the same ball park. Law is about precedent and fairness. The decision made by CA doesn't represent either of those.

Absolutely law is about both precedent and fairness and while I think 12 months is excessive even if I mentioned that sanction in the what if thread however that sort of sanction is really for something akin to doping or match fixing which this case clearly is neither but the problem I see is there a case to aid such a case.

Hope he gets the support he needs. At the end of the day, regardless of what the truth is, he knows he’s ****ed up, most of us would kill to be in his position so to have that taken away through a mistake - which we all make- would be pretty gut wrenching for him.

Won’t lie that I have been keeping tabs constantly over the last few days because I wanted to know what will happen, unfortunately that is the type of hunger for news that creates the media bloodlust that we have observed. Nobody imo deserves to be hounded in that way for making a mistake, cheating, heck even murder tbh. On a grander scale, the way the media operates - and again I think the public is part of the problem - is shithouse and has damaging consequences on all of society.

Anyway, don’t mean to go on a tangent, hopefully Smithy will be back again next year. I loved watching him fail cos I think there was a bit of hyperbole going on claiming he was the best since Bradman but I hope he gets the opportunity to come back and play the game, and the opportunity to, in his heart, earn back everyone’s respect.

I wasn’t loving watching him fail, his record is still the best since Bradman. You would think he would come back to the field a bit as that has happened to everyone.

I think the public perception will swing big time now that he's faced the music in the way that he did.

His greatest challenge will be coming back, and you suspect he'll be welcomed back with open arms when the time comes.

Serving his 12 month ban will be a big part of the forgiveness process, even if it is a bit excessive.

I do think the Shield ban is harsh though, it should be a national team ban only.

Maybe. Certainly didn’t want to make my post about that though. Was more trying to get at how I hope he can get through this for his own well being, leaving aside the cricket for the moment, though coming back and playing will no doubt be a major part of the road back. I just can’t begin to comprehend what he must be going through.
