Same 2008-2012. It'd be possible to make some ball park estimations for earlier years, using a guestimate for average game times.
Thanks for that. I saw a couple of names there (Shane Wakelin & Nathan Carroll) who I thought would have been gone by 2008, didn't bother to look them up, so guessed that it covered a few more years. And when I saw Carroll's name there I couldn't help but feel for any Melbourne fan who watched him spending 95.79% of possible game time on the ground!

The following years did not contain at least 1 100 point win.

By hand and eye, yes.

Never used any sort of software for statistics.

That stuff would drive my head in and I'd destroy the bloody thing.

There have been three instances of a team receiving a 100 point loss, yet going on to win a premiership later that season or the season after.

Carlton 1945, lost by 100 points to Essendon in round 3, premiers that season (148 days later).
Essendon 1992, lost by 160 points to Hawthorn in round 20, premiers next season (421 days later).
Geelong 2006, lost by 102 points to Collingwood in round 8, premiers next season (498 days later).

Observed in Round 18 2012
  • Hawthorn set a new League record for consecutive wins over 40 points.
  • Geelong 2012 still haven't done what every Geelong team since 1918 has done.
  • Melbourne go over 8,000 points 'in the red' for the first time.
  • Collingwood's lowest attendance in 60 seasons.
  • Richmond's average losing margin is their lowest for any season where they lost 10 or more matches.
  • Since moving to Sydney, the Swans have conceded just 2 more points than they have scored.
  • The lowest 3/4 time score conceded by Fremantle.
  • St Kilda break a record they set in 1925.
  • West Coast equal a feat which has been the preserve of Essendon for over 60 years.

GWS poised to break St Kilda's 115 year old record of losing 22 qrts in a row - currently on 20.
They are are a compendium of badness. (But Port Adelaide may defend St Kilda's record.)

Matches played that were losses by at least 14 points each quarter 1897-2012 R18
(There have been just 178 instances out of 14,112 matches.)

Purely speculation at this point, but for West Coast;

Gaff win B&F, Darling win leading goalkicker.
Both in their 2nd season and were 19 at start of season (both turned 20 in mid-june)
Playing in a finals team.

When was the last time a finals-bound team had younger players win club B&F AND Lead Goalkicker in the same season?

WCE themselves had Guy McKenna (19 start of season) and Sumich (21) achieve this in 1989.
Essendon had James Hird (21) and Cummings (20) achieve this in 1994.
Ward (22) and Jeremy Cameron could also post a low total.

However the above sides didnt make finals, unlike West Coast 2012.

Great stats but the history got a little fuzzy.

St Kilda's round 1 1900 match v Melbourne originally ended in a draw. However St Kilda successfully protested that one of Melbourne's behinds was scored after the bell in the third quarter. Melbourne had 1 point deducted from their 3/4 time score. St Kilda therefore won the match by 1 point - their first win in the competition.

In 1909 St Kilda in their match against Geelong fielded a player who had been suspended the previous week by the Ballarat League. St Kilda officials before the match, unsure about the player's eligibility informed Geelong secretary, Charles Brownlow of the situation. Brownlow told them that if they allowed the player on the field they did so at their own risk.
St Kilda duly played him and won the match by 1 point. Geelong protested to the League and St Kilda forfeited the match but the score stood. It remains the only match forfeited in the League's history. Below is how how I tell my database that although St Kilda has the higher score the match is a Geelong win and a St Kilda loss.

If(Game Date=Date(6;5;1909 ) and Team = "Geelong";1;
If(Game Date=Date(6;5;1909 ) and Team = "St Kilda";0;
If(GetAsNumber(Result)>0;1;0)))

Meanwhile the Giants are ahead of Fitzroy 1996 by 213 points in the competition for the greatest points deficit for a season. Third placed St Kilda 1899 has now bowed out, having no more matches left to play in the 1899 season.

After 17 matches:
2012 GWS -1304
1996 Fitzroy -1091
1899 St Kilda -1068

Bugger, I've got those two mixed up before. My excuse is that 100 years is a long time ago and I was very young back then.

In my eyes, a silly thing. I just let the result stand with the competition points forfeited.
The League and the press at the time and the League and other sources since have counted the match as a Geelong win and a St Kilda loss. Ladders published in 1909 and since reflect this, as do tables of total team wins for Geelong and St kilda, overall and head to head. No consideration seems ever to have been given to a special category of 'forfeit' so that St Kilda's record of wins, losses and draws would be presented currently as:
Played 2235 Wins 874, losses 1336, forfeits 1, draws 25.

A synonym for forfeit is "lose". You can't forfeit something and still have it. Counting the R6 1909 match as a St Kilda win and a St Kilda forfeit makes no sense. St Kilda lost their status as winner of the match as well as the match points. Therefore St Kilda had two wins for 1909, not three. Their one point advantage on the scoreboard in the match against Geelong was over-ridden by dint of having played an ineligible player. I've seen no reports that there was consideration of nullifying St Kilda's score as well to correct any perceived anomaly.

As for Geelong, one of antonyms for forfeit is "win" or "gain". Counting a match forfeited to them as a win seems sensible. To add the match to Geelong's tally of losses does not. After the successful appeal against the result of the match, they gained a win, giving them three wins for 1909 not two.

St Kilda won the match, Geelong got the competition points. Winning whilst scoring fewer points requires some handwaving which I elected not to adopt.

Curiously, in the NRL and its ancestors, where this sort of thing has happened a number of times, the aggrieved party doesn't even get the points, none are given.
