Yes, I have it fractionally behind the R22 2004 game between Hawthorn & Geelong, 147.86 v 147.93, total games 6506 v 6509.

That game is a massive sliding doors game i reckon. Geelong 17.23.125 to Hawthorn's 9.4.58.

If only Geelong kicked a bit better, and the Hawks maybe a more standard 7.6.48 for example. The extra 30 or so points difference would have put the Hawks on the bottom of the ladder, and thus they would have had pick 1 in that draft. It was always the 'Deledio Cup' that season, so it would have been an astounding call for the Hawks to take Roughead with pick 1. What may have changed if one of those players in that famous draft went to a different club? We'll never know of course but i cannot keep wondering if only Geelong had their kicking boots on.

The highest lowest score in a season is 5.16 (46) by Melbourne vs. Geelong from 1982 (round 3).

The lowest high is 14.17 (101) by Collingwood vs. Fitzroy from 1917 (round 13). This was the only century score that season.

Don't know how many teams played in 1917 but suspect only 4 or so in world war one time so there may have been a far smaller amount of games played in that year which needs to be considered when comparing to seasons where over 130 games get played. In fact we have over 200 in this 18 team league.

I've often wondered how history would have panned out at the end of 2004 if 15th placed Hawthorn had decided that it needed an experienced coach with a Hawthorn background as senior coach, and appointed Terry Wallace to the position, while bottom team Richmond took a punt on a new coach in Alistair Clarkson. Then in the draft, the Tigers select Jarryd Roughhead from Gippsland Power and Lance Franklin from Perth; while the Hawks draft Murray Bushranger Brett Delidio and a young Northern Territory player in Richard Tambling.

There are quite a few players who served in World War I and World War II, however are there any players who served in the Korean or Vietnam Wars?
Graham Cornes is one who is well known for having served in the Vietnam War. John Duckworth (Fitzroy) was another. No doubt there were plenty of others, can't say I've ever seen a list of names anywhere, the same applies with the Korean War.

Gent and the other veterans -- Ian Anderson, Lindsay McGie, Ian Payne, Greg Perry and Bill Thompson -- make up six of the 12 VFL players who served in Vietnam. The Essendon six were honoured yesterday at the Dick Reynolds Club luncheon and will be guests at the MCG today. Gent looks forward to renewing acquaintances and talking footy.

HELLO AND GOOD MORNING

Seriously though, is there any record of 50 meter penalties that have been given away? If so, who has given away the most (current player or whatever stats are available)?

It's probably a long shot, but I figured they keep frees against records (well, in recent years) so maybe that exists too?

Thanks :)

Don't have the stats, but can tell you that prior to his departure to Sydney, Buddy would be miles in front at our club on that front....He led the most frees against stat across the entire league by a fair margin, for quite a few years while at Hawthorn....Funny how that no longer remains the case at Sydney though.o_O

He'd be the prime candidate & your best bet.

I get awfully confused when I read your posts and you're obviously a Hawthorn supporter, but it says Essendon under your name.

Maybe I'm missing something, has happened before!

Does anyone have a list of players who played senior football for two different AFL/VFL clubs in the same season?

The last players I can think of are from the early 1990s when there was a mid-season draft. In 1991 Trevor Spencer played for Melbourne in the early part of the season, and Geelong in the second half, playing against Collingwood in Round 6 as a Demon, and against the Magpies as a Cat in Round 24. In 1992 David Johnston was with Essendon early in the season, before switching to Fitzroy mid-season. Interestingly, Johnston played his last game for the Bombers against Fitzroy, and played against St Kilda as a Bomber early that season, and again against the Saints as a Lion in Round 20. Ian McMullin played for Essendon against Collingwood in Round 4 1992, and in his next senior game in Round 19 he was playing for Collingwood against Essendon!

Also in 1992 Jim West, a strong goal-kicker for the Sydney Swans early in the year left the club and was drafted by the Adelaide Crows, but failed to play senior football for Adelaide. In 1993, Damien Bourke went from Geelong to the Brisbane Bears and Brad Fox from Essendon to Richmond mid-season, but Bourke and Fox did not play a senior game for the Cats and Bombers that year.

A list would be great to see if there are any interesting stats like those for Spencer, Johnston and McMullin.

I got this list (of 249 cases) of players playing for 2 clubs in the one season from somewhere a few years ago, almost certainly in here, but a fair bit of searching has failed to track the source down. I hope it is okay in this rather humble form, being able to upload it in spreadsheet form would be ideal.

Thanks for sharing that.
Interestingly I was looking to see the trades between clubs but most of these ones from 1980's seem to be one way. A player or players goto one club and you do not find players going back the other way in same year. I assume in most cases these were pure clearances, rather than trades as we know them today. Clubs must have got a payment of some kind rather than player for player trades.

I remember Greg Wells coming to Carlton was a big in season trade at the time, because basically he was Melbourne's next best player after champion Robert Flower. I remember Michael Young and Vin Catoggio going to Melbourne at one stage but no sign of them as mid season trades, so I assume their was no direct swap which is surprising.

Thanks 35Daicos, much appreciated.

I have been looking through to find some interesting stats; some come to mind already:

  • The Saints and Tigers seem to like to trade players mid-season
  • Mark Scott twice switched teams mid-season in 1980 and 1983.
  • Bernie Harris played his last game in 1990 as a Bear against the Bulldogs, and his first game as a Saint five rounds later also against the Bulldogs. Harris also played against Fitzroy, Hawthorn and North Melbourne both for Brisbane and St Kilda.
  • George Collard and Ken Newton have played for both premier and wooden-spooner in the same season. Collard played for 1938 premier Carlton and that year's wooden spooner South Melbourne; while Newton played for Essendon (premier) and Hawthorn (last, winless) in 1950.

Both Catoggio and Young played for Carlton until the end of 1980, but for Melbourne from the start of 1981 so they look to have been transferred off-season.

http://afltables.com/afl/stats/players/V/Vin_Catoggio.html
http://afltables.com/afl/stats/players/M/Michael_Young.html

The Encyclopedia of AFL Footballers has Catoggio as playing for Carlton 1973, 1975-76, and 1978-81. Melbourne 1981-82. Sydney 1983. Saying that he played for the two clubs in 1981 must simply be an error.

Wells obviously did move in the middle of 1980, "sold for $200,000 (a record fee at the time) without his knowledge in mid-1980" according to the same book. Perhaps it was part of the agreement that the two Blues players would move at the end of the year?

Edit: Added a bit that confirms they were part of the Wells deal, but didn't move until March 1981.

http://www.blueseum.org/tiki-index.php?page=Vin+Catoggio
In 1981, Catoggio and fellow Blue Michael Young were cleared to Melbourne as part of the complicated Greg Wells transfer deal.

http://www.blueseum.org/tiki-index.php?page=Greg+Wells
Then, two days before the deadline for mid-season clearances in 1980, Wells was stunned by the news that cash-strapped Melbourne had finally agreed to trade him to the Blues for an unconfirmed cash payment of $75,000, plus two players (eventually, Vin Cattoggio? and Michael Young – who joined the Demons the following year).

Here's the story from The Age, March 10, 1981 (this link was found here: http://demonwiki.org/Vin+Catoggio )

What's the average 1/4 Time, Half Time and 3 quarter time score per season?

Cheers.

Can anyone tell me the lowest number of games a player has been on a list for 5 years? Collingwood as yet have not delisted Cory Gault who has played 4 games in 4 years (2 years senior list then 2 years rookie list). The only way I see he gets a game in 2016 if 2 key forwards are injured at the same time.

Without even looking it up, the injury-riddled Josh Cowan quite easily beats that.

2010 – 0 games
2011 – 3 games
2012 – 0 games
2013 – 0 games
2014 – 0 games
2015 – 2 games
2016 – remains on the list

Patrick Steinfort was on Richmond's list for (I'm pretty sure) 5 years without playing a game, so that would be hard to beat! I'm not sure what the official answer is, however.

He's played fewer than 13 quarters, given three sub vests.
